The staff are without exception excellent - providing high quality care with compassion and kindness.
The facilities are excellent and the team at Birtley are incredibly responsive to any queries from residents and their families.
Knowing my mother is safe, well cared for and happy is invaluable.
Thank you, Sam, for sharing your experience. We're delighted to know that your mother is happy at Birtley House and feels safe, whilst receiving the care she deserves. Your kind words mean so much to everyone here.Providing compassionate, person-centred care while supporting families every step of the way is at the heart of what we do.
Birtley House was just the sort of environment that we wanted my father to be in for his final days. The family-run feeling permeated the business, and staff always appeared happy to work there. The setting is ideal for allowing an older person to feel that they are retiring to the country. A country manor feeling, surrounded by beautiful countryside. We were very pleased with the professional manner with which staff members ranging from the owners, to management, receptionists, nurses and care workers conducted themselves. Ultimately, dad was able to end his life with as much dignity as possible, in comfort and with people who cared for him. I would recommend Birtley to anyone.
Thank you for your thoughtful review and recommendation. It was a privilege to care for your father, and we're so pleased that our home and team helped make this difficult time a little easier for your family
I will forever be thankful for how they cared for and looked after my Mother, June.
Special praise and mentions to the nursing team staff; Rudo and Tracey. Tracey made my mother less intimidated on her first day there and really took the time to understand her and get to know her, my mother was immediately at ease and thats no mean feat. Then there's one of the lead nurses Rudo who is genuinely one of the nicest and best people I've ever met in my 44 years on this earth.
Thanks Sinead and family for having us. You made the toughest experience of my mothers life (and my own) all that little easier and I will forever be grateful.
Kindest regards,
Ben
Thank you for your generous words. We are so pleased that June felt safe, comfortable and well cared for from the moment she arrived. Your recognition of our team, especially Tracey and Rudo, is greatly appreciated. We send you and your family our warmest wishes.
Birtley House is as much as can be for a nursing home "a home from home". Set in beautiful grounds, all accessible for the residents. All the staff are friendly and caring. Nothing is to much trouble. I would not wish for my mother to be anywhere else. I have been visiting my mother for over a year and come in and out with no notice & not once have I ever smelt 'a nursing home smell'" I cannot praise Birtley enough.
Thank you for your lovely review. We are very privileged to be nestled in the Surrey countryside and encourage all residents to make full use of the gardens and grounds on their doorstep. We are also delighted that over the past year, you have felt comfortable visiting your mother frequently and at...
It is like being in your own home, literally. You are welcomed by all the family who run Birtley House and all their long serving staff, genuinely, like a long lost friend. The food is ample and truly delicious with infinite choices. The care and attention from all the staff is superb.

The cheese and wine supper was a lovely idea and the two musical afternoons that I went to were great fun.
We are delighted you enjoyed your short stay with us. Kind Regards Jennifer ThompsonMarketing Manager
It is important to me to leave a review for Birtley House because of how grateful I am for the amount of care the staff provided my Mum while she stayed, she there. She went to stay at Birtley House because she needed respite from feeling low and needed some support with everyday life after her Husband passed. Honestly, the staff were wonderful. After a two week stay she felt a new person. It is due to them that she made a full recovery and now feels strong enough to look forward in life. She benefited from doing a daily walk around the beautifully kept surroundings and having access to all facilities available. She is now back home and plans to keep up with the new friends she made. So, a huge thank you to all the staff for being so welcoming and caring.
We are proud to have contributed to your mother's recovery, supporting her in regaining independence and confidence. We feel our outdoor environment and nature is a wonderful tonic to feeling better. Thank you for choosing Birtley House, Kind regards Jennifer Thompson, Marketing Manager.
I booked my mother into Birtley for one week after she broke her thumb, and while I was on holiday for a week. She had a very enjoyable stay, particularly having the chance to take part in the daily activities. The staff were extremely thoughful and caring. The room was lovely and the food was perfect for an elderly person.
Thank you for your kind words Linda. It is great to know that your mother had a great stay with us. We are glad she is on the mend and hope she continues to recover swiftly. Kind regards Jennifer
I was in for 10 days rehab after a hip replacement - excellent care.
Thank you for reviewing your time with us, we do always strive for excellence! We do hope you continue to recover swiftly Kind Regards Jennifer
As a visitor to one of your residences, I find Birtley House a very special place with such a wonderfully peaceful and calm atmosphere. Any residents of Birtley must feel happy and content that they are having the best care and attention possible in beautiful surroundings.already submitted
Thank you for your incredibly kind comments, praise like this means so much to our staff. Best wishes, Jennifer
Having lived at home with a full time carer it became necessary for my 90 year old mother to have a greater level of care. I am extremely happy that she is at Birtley House. It is exemplary in every single respect. It was a huge change for her but all the caring and compassionate staff and the director's family have been wonderful in helping her to settle. She is looked after to a very high standard of personalised care. The food is excellent and delicious homemade teas are provided for residents and visitors alike. There is also a cafe with hot and cold drinks where you can help yourself and sit together as if you were in your own home. The gardens and grounds are beautiful and my mother is taken out every day, if she wishes. It really benefits from being family run and this what makes it feel like a home from home. I highly recommend it and am so thankful that my mother is able to benefit from such superb care in a very special setting.
Thank you very much for your wonderful feedback, Susanna. We are incredibly pleased that you choose Birtley House Nursing Home for your mother. We are very proud of the high standard of care all our staff provide. We know that transitioning into a new home and environment, can be unsettling but we...
More importantly, every single member of staff seems to care. My father is treated with the same kindness and care as he would receive from me. It feels like the carers are caring for family.
I've visited a lot of care homes, plenty of them perfectly nice. This is the best by far.
Thank you so much for your lovely kind comments. We are very lucky to have such a beautiful home and garden, and we always strive to be the best we can be. We are pleased that your father is enjoying his stay, and we will pass your appreciation on to all our staff.
The premises and the facilities are immaculate, clean and well maintained, and the food very good.
In addition are the grounds of 42 acres containing orchards, vegetable gardens, flower borders, extensive grassland, woods, streams and lakes - perfect walking country when one is attempting to get back to ones former state of health and active way of life.
I was impressed and would recommend others to seek out Birtley House should care, respite, or nursing become necessary for oneself or members of one's family.
I believe the high quality of the management and care I witnessed and enjoyed are due in no small part to the continuing family ownership and day to day management of Birtley House by the family, and the way they appear to care for both residents and employees.
It was a pleasure to help and support you with your recovery journey. We are pleased we could make your respite stay a positive experience. We are blessed with both our surroundings and to have such dedicated staff. Your lovely comments will be shared with the staff. It's always both rewarding and warming for Birtley to hear this kind of testimonial . Thank you for your kind feedback. Jennifer.
My wife was at Birtley House for 7 weeks of respite care at the start of 2025. We enjoyed dealing with this family-owned business and found the staff to be professional and welcoming. My wife benefitted from joining in with the activities and everything that Birtley House had to offer during her stay. She responded very well to the expert care provided and enjoyed the beautiful house and grounds during her time at Birtley House.
Thank you so much for your truly kind comments, we are delighted that you were happy with your wife's care and pleased we could help aid her recovery. Jennifer Thompson Marketing Manager
All of the staff were very welcoming and helpful to our family and nothing was too much trouble. I would highly recommend for respite care.
All the staff here at Birtley House are pleased that your mother is feeling better and that we could help her on her recovery journey. I will pass your lovely comments onto the Birtley House Team, Kind Regards.
Birtley House Nursing Home provided a caring, compassionate and considerate service to not only my dad, as a resident, but to the family too. It was reassuring knowing my dad was being so well looked after at Birtley and was in very good care. The staff made my dad feel comfortable and nothing was too much trouble. They always treated him with dignity and respect. Birtley House always felt homely, clean, safe and welcoming. The setting in the Surrey Hills is just wonderful, peaceful and calm which is also mirrored inside. Overall, our experience at Birtley was really positive with great management and staff. Would certainly recommend Birtley House Nursing Home and will miss everyone.
We are extremely pleased Birtley House could help provide such a positive experience for both your father and the family. We always aim for our home to feel like the residents' own home. Kind regards, Jennifer.
Birtley House fulfilled all I had hoped for. It really is quite excellent. The staff are attentive and caring. The home is surrounded by beautiful gardens. The level of cleanliness is excellent. I cannot recommend it too highly.

Had a wonderful week after being in hospital, was thoroughly spoilt and cared for. Would stay here again.
We are delighted you chose Birtley House for your recuperation and that you enjoyed your week's stay with us and the food! We will pass on your comments to our caring staff and kitchen. Thank you.
My father spent over 8 amazing and wonderful years in this magical family-run nursing home. It is as good as any five-star luxury country hotel. All the staff from reception, cleaning, catering, activities, care and nursing to management and directors were absolutely wonderful. The level of service given by everybody could not be better. The kindness, compassion, care, dignity and respect given is unsurpassed. I cannot think of a better place for my father to have been and will be eternally grateful for everything the home has done for him. It truly was his home away from home. The service provided could not have been better. The setting and grounds are truly magnificent, especially the views and lake. Thank you so much Birtley for loving Dad like he was a part of your family, I know in my heart he will miss you all very much, but will be smiling down on you now thanking you all very much for looking after him whilst in your care. Thank you all so very much from all our family.
Thank you for your very kind words. It goes without saying that your father will be greatly missed by all of us here at Birtley House. Over the 8 years your father truly became part of our extended family and part of all our celebrations. We are grateful that we were given the opportunity to care for him over the years and provide comfort in his final days.
All aspects are good except the heating is too hot.

Meet the Team (3)

Sylwia Indycka has a full Nursing background as well as previous care home management experience. A proud member of the Birtley team since July 2018, she joined us during a period of business innovation and change and has inspired and led her team to success in various ways.
Sylwia is a positive character with various dimensions to her leadership, she goes the extra mile to always make sure our Residents are getting the most out of life and experiencing new things, whilst teaching her team to do the same. She has also written a book on end-of-life care following her own personal experience of caring for a close family member.

Qualifications: University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Romania, General Nurse qualifications in 2014, maximum degree.
Written by our Registered Manager, Vio was a finalist for the 'Frontline Leader of the Year' award at the Surrey Care Awards in 2019.
I met Viorica when I joined Birtley House in July 2018, it didn’t take me long to recognise her skills and abilities. In this short time, she proved to me her dedication, commitment, organisational and strong leadership skills.
After witnessing Vio’s work ethic, and the influence she has on others in the nursing team, general hard work, commitment and positive attitude to change, I chose to promote Vio to Clinical Lead in the Spring of 2019. Vio’s attitude is always positive and she is strategic in her approach to completing tasks. I have seen days where she might be facing a deadline, but she will continue to motivate others, find the paths of least resistance, and prioritise accordingly. Great skills to have in a reactive role such as nursing.Vio has raised the visibility of a smile around the home and she faces her duties with a focus on compassion and an open mind and she treats everybody fairly. Her passion and consistency support our home all the time.
Our latest CQC inspection on 7th June this year was of course unannounced and a first for Vio. She was a great support to me during this time, as I knew I could trust that she would be calm and professional. She was, and she reassured the three inspectors with her skills and knowledge. She was able to navigate them through the day with a great attitude, and she showed pride in her work as she found them the evidence of things that they requested.
Vio’s caring personality allows her to graciously and naturally respect resident’s values and respond actively to other people’s needs. Vio always wants the best possible outcomes for residents and staff. She genuinely, really cares and wants to make a difference.
As a qualified nurse myself and now an experienced Care Home Manager, I have learnt that to deliver good, quality, person-centred care and effective compassion, the nurse in question is required to use their head and heart. I have witnessed this quality in Viorica on numerous occasions, and she sets great examples for the team around her.
Every time I implement new innovations or a change Vio adopts a positive approach towards learning and embraces the challenge, because she wants to grow in her skills and knowledge, and she wants to be the best version of herself for the home.
I think that nothing can reward nursing practice as much as the feeling you get when you know that you are being the nurse, and the person, that you want to be – I strongly believe that Vio actively practices being this person. It takes courage and self-management to respond to people who are distressed and vulnerable, to advocate patient care or to challenge and change practice and Vio each time can deliver all.
I am very pleased to have Vio in my nursing team- she is truly a rising star in the nursing industry because of her dedication, kindness, attention to detail and empathetic compassion.

Hello, I'm Rudo and l have been a nurse for 14 years.
I started at Birtley House as a healthcare assistant and it really motivated me to pursue my nursing career. Having grown up living with my Grandmother, my passion is taking care of older people. Just after qualifying as a nurse, I went on to study a module at Brighton University which explored perceptions of ageing and why we should care for our elders in certain ways. Being able to apply this to my Nursing qualifications was perfect for the career that I have chosen, and which I love. I have been at Birtley House for around 18 years and only stepped away once for a short stint in a hospital environment to wider develop my knowledge and experience.
