My mother was in Birtley House for 7 months. She had a wonderful room overlooking the gardens which she loved looking out on to from her chair and later bed. Over my weekly visits sitting in her room or taking her out into the gardens in her wheelchair, I was very aware in many small things of the attention
she got and the great relationship she had with so many of the Birtley staff - not just nurses and carers, but the housekeeping staff who cleaned her room and bought back her laundry and the catering staff who brought the tea trolley and cakes. The nursing staff regularly kept me informed by phone between visits of any changes in her health and the way they helped her and us as her family as her health deteriorated and over her death was especially important, comforting and helpful.

My dear Mother received exceptional respite and nursing care after a hip fracture. Birtley House is beautiful in every way. Every member of staff was truly amazing. Professional, Caring, Welcoming and friendly. Every need and wish is met. My Mother celebrated her 94th birthday at Birtley and thoroughly
enjoyed herself. Everyone made her day very special. Fabulous nursing, physio, meals, care needs, and a beautiful room. Her stay was the same as a 5-star hotel. Thank you to you all for all your exceptional and fabulous care that you so willingly gave my dear Mum.

I received kindness, care throughout my stay of a period of 2 months. Every member of staff was aware of my needs and assisted me whenever I called upon them. Cleanliness was very high. Food was very well presented, although perhaps the pastries were undercooked. Afternoon tea was with delicious fresh
sandwiches and cakes - quite the best meal of the day!

My mother received excellent care throughout her 9 week stay at Birtley. The staff were caring, helpful and friendly to the max. I cannot recommend this place highly enough and I only hope that when it comes to that stage in my own life, I am lucky enough to stay somewhere like Birtley House!

My reason for a 3-week stay was to recover from hospital attention for type 2 diabetes, having been som 15 years as type 1 diabetes.
Following 3 week stay, I have recovered from physical weakness and received complete instruction for my diet, exercise and timing of any medication, balanced with daily
food intake.
Now have a confident approach in following any medication/food intake and look forward to normal life/capabilities.

I needed respite care after having broken my hip and spending two weeks in hospital. The medical/nursing care was excellent. Physiotherapy is excellent with sessions as required. Care support very good - nothing too much trouble. Friendliness and smiles are the spirit of Birtley. Food, very good, always
a choice if you do not like options, not always suitable, especially supper (cheese at night?) Soups homemade and good. Altogether a good experience.

My mother has stayed here several times for periods lasting two weeks and sometimes longer. This gives her family and her a bit of a break and she enjoys the change of scene. She particularly likes the beautiful gardens. She has been very kindly treated by all the staff, who are always patient and helpful.

We have visited friends here for many years and have always had a very good impression of the home. Now I have been here for a week as a patient and I could not have had better treatment. More caring and helpful in every way, medically, physiotherapy (especially good), food and all other departments.

Beautiful Birtley House has been home to our mother for the past nine years. The Mews, where she lived from 2010 - 2018, is independent, supported living at its very best. Excellent large and most attractive flats provide an oasis of warmth and care - with superb staff who combine supportive friendship
with impeccable, professional practical assistance. As my mother has aged, her needs have become greater and the care provided by Birtley House staff has adapted, seamlessly, to her changing circumstances. She now needs more intensive attention and assistance in a large, light and beautiful room in ‘The Annexe’. The exceptional professional and loving care that is unfailingly provided for her, in difficult circumstances, is extended to all of us. We are privileged to be a part of the extraordinary Birtley family of staff and residents - sharing, joys, sorrows and celebrations, confident in the knowledge that our beloved mother is safe, happy and loved. All at Birtley House
We would like to thank everyone who was involved in making my father’s birthday tea party yesterday such a success. The cake was excellent (much enjoyed by us and we hope we left enough for others to enjoy too!) and it was very kind and thoughtful when so many people turned up
to sing ‘Happy Birthday’.
Dad is very happy with you, I know he can be difficult at times but truly he is more contented now than for many years.

The carers and staff at Birtley House have been incredible to my mum. They have been wonderfully caring to her and when she was very difficult and anxious when she first arrived, they were so patient and tolerant of her behaviour.
They have all made us feel so welcome when we've visited, it has really
felt like a big family and everyone is welcome and cared for. They couldn't have done any more to help my mum or the rest of the family.

My husband was admitted after a short stay in hospital - he stayed for 10 days and the care and attention he received was excellent - he had a wound on his bottom which was monitored and looked after well. He came home looking well and refreshed.

This will be my second Christmas. The house is set in beautiful grounds, cultivated to a high degree, natural lakes, ponds, frequently flying geese, ducks and rare birds. We are fed on vegetables and fruit grown here, beehives provide honey and jams. There is a delightful rose garden in which we sit
and have a special event. Each week we have a new menu with a choice of two for all courses, diets are well taken care of. Every month we have now programmed with a large variety of music, films, yoga, chiropody and hairdressing. Our spiritual care is well taken of too. Birtley House is love, laughter and excellent care.

Birtley House is a caring environment for its residents. The nurses and carers are sympathetic to their residents, the activities are varied and stimulating and the house and extensive grounds are beautifully maintained and presented. As a regular visitor, I find the communication between nurses and
family members is improving which helps me keep in touch with my mother's needs. Birtley House is not cheap but my mother is content.

Sylwia Indycka

Job Title: Registered Manager Joined: 2018

Sylwia Indycka has a full Nursing background as well as previous care home management experience. A proud member of the Birtley team since July 2018, she joined us during a period of business innovation and change and has inspired and led her team to success in various ways.


Sylwia is a positive character with various dimensions to her leadership, she goes the extra mile to always make sure our Residents are getting the most out of life and experiencing new things, whilst teaching her team to do the same. She has also written a book on end-of-life care following her own personal experience of caring for a close family member.

Viorica

Viorica Darie

Job Title: Clinical Lead Nurse Joined: 2016

Qualifications: University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Romania, General Nurse qualifications in 2014, maximum degree.


Written by our Registered Manager, Vio was a finalist for the 'Frontline Leader of the Year' award at the Surrey Care Awards in 2019.


I met Viorica when I joined Birtley House in July 2018, it didn’t take me long to recognise her skills and abilities. In this short time, she proved to me her dedication, commitment, organisational and strong leadership skills.


After witnessing Vio’s work ethic, and the influence she has on others in the nursing team, general hard work, commitment and positive attitude to change, I chose to promote Vio to Clinical Lead in the Spring of 2019. Vio’s attitude is always positive and she is strategic in her approach to completing tasks. I have seen days where she might be facing a deadline, but she will continue to motivate others, find the paths of least resistance, and prioritise accordingly. Great skills to have in a reactive role such as nursing.

Vio has raised the visibility of a smile around the home and she faces her duties with a focus on compassion and an open mind and she treats everybody fairly. Her passion and consistency support our home all the time.


Our latest CQC inspection on 7th June this year was of course unannounced and a first for Vio. She was a great support to me during this time, as I knew I could trust that she would be calm and professional. She was, and she reassured the three inspectors with her skills and knowledge. She was able to navigate them through the day with a great attitude, and she showed pride in her work as she found them the evidence of things that they requested.


Vio’s caring personality allows her to graciously and naturally respect resident’s values and respond actively to other people’s needs. Vio always wants the best possible outcomes for residents and staff. She genuinely, really cares and wants to make a difference.


As a qualified nurse myself and now an experienced Care Home Manager, I have learnt that to deliver good, quality, person-centred care and effective compassion, the nurse in question is required to use their head and heart. I have witnessed this quality in Viorica on numerous occasions, and she sets great examples for the team around her.


Every time I implement new innovations or a change Vio adopts a positive approach towards learning and embraces the challenge, because she wants to grow in her skills and knowledge, and she wants to be the best version of herself for the home.


I think that nothing can reward nursing practice as much as the feeling you get when you know that you are being the nurse, and the person, that you want to be – I strongly believe that Vio actively practices being this person. It takes courage and self-management to respond to people who are distressed and vulnerable, to advocate patient care or to challenge and change practice and Vio each time can deliver all.

Hello, I'm Rudo and l have been a nurse for 14 years.


I started at Birtley House as a healthcare assistant and it really motivated me to pursue my nursing career. Having grown up living with my Grandmother, my passion is taking care of older people. Just after qualifying as a nurse, I went on to study a module at Brighton University which explored perceptions of ageing and why we should care for our elders in certain ways. Being able to apply this to my Nursing qualifications was perfect for the career that I have chosen, and which I love. I have been at Birtley House for around 18 years and only stepped away once for a short stint in a hospital environment to wider develop my knowledge and experience.
