Birtley House Nursing Home

My mother was a resident in Birtley House Nursing Home for about two years, having previously spent some five years in a flat. She was fortunate to be able to have a west wing apartment where she was very comfortable and well looked after. Staff were very quick to respond to the resident's call bell, and visitors were always offered tea/coffee and biscuits. A senior member of staff normally called in each day to see her. The daily activities, which were organised and run by an internal team, sought to engage the resident proactively and were very varied. My mother's own interest was encouraged. In suitable weather, if she wished to sit outside that would be facilitated. As her health deteriorated, all care was provided by Birtley Staff. In her final hours, she was never left alone and after passing away, staff ensure that she continues to be treated with respect. The management have remained in touch, my wife and I have visited several times and the atmosphere and ambience seem to have remained the same.

Birtley have been looking after my bedridden mother for over a year now. My father was here prior to his death in 2017. The level of care and kindness is excellent. A beautiful setting; good fresh food; great activities and a high standard of care in lovely rooms. The whole family take great care of their residents and their families. Even amidst the difficulties of Covid.

My mother has been well looked after since January 2017 at Birtley House Nursing Home. She is generally happy living here. There is a lovely family atmosphere at the home which creates a happy environment. Visiting is now operational, 1 hour per week for relatives to see loved ones, which is a real blessing.

My dear mother spent the last three months of her life at Birtley House. Knowing that she felt she was in the best place possible comforts me everyday. The management and staff, from every department, aspire to highly personalized and dignified care and service. My mother had complex pain, dietary and palliative care needs and the staff worked tirelessly to make everyday interesting, comfortable and enjoyable within the home and gardens. They also worked efficiently and effectively with outside organizations to ensure that all needs were considered and met. My mother, her family and her friends all felt comforted and supported by the kindness and compassion of the staff and management of this home. I have no hesitation in recommending Birtley House as an excellent, open, innovative and solution-focused home that places the patient at the center of all it does. Thank you all at Birtley House for making our mother smile and for keeping her as comfortable as possible on her final journey.

Very well run, friendly and imaginative. Residents feel safe and cared for. Communication very well managed. I admire the way in which Birtley House has responded to the Covid-19 epidemic; it has been really impressive.

My mother was in Birtley House for 7 months. She had a wonderful room overlooking the gardens which she loved looking out on to from her chair and later bed. Over my weekly visits sitting in her room or taking her out into the gardens in her wheelchair, I was very aware in many small things of the attention she got and the great relationship she had with so many of the Birtley staff - not just nurses and carers, but the housekeeping staff who cleaned her room and bought back her laundry and the catering staff who brought the tea trolley and cakes. The nursing staff regularly kept me informed by phone between visits of any changes in her health and the way they helped her and us as her family as her health deteriorated and over her death was especially important, comforting and helpful.

My dear Mother received exceptional respite and nursing care after a hip fracture. Birtley House is beautiful in every way. Every member of staff was truly amazing. Professional, Caring, Welcoming and friendly. Every need and wish is met. My Mother celebrated her 94th birthday at Birtley and thoroughly enjoyed herself. Everyone made her day very special. Fabulous nursing, physio, meals, care needs, and a beautiful room. Her stay was the same as a 5-star hotel. Thank you to you all for all your exceptional and fabulous care that you so willingly gave my dear Mum.

I received kindness, care throughout my stay of a period of 2 months. Every member of staff was aware of my needs and assisted me whenever I called upon them. Cleanliness was very high. Food was very well presented, although perhaps the pastries were undercooked. Afternoon tea was with delicious fresh sandwiches and cakes - quite the best meal of the day!

My mother received excellent care throughout her 9 week stay at Birtley. The staff were caring, helpful and friendly to the max. I cannot recommend this place highly enough and I only hope that when it comes to that stage in my own life, I am lucky enough to stay somewhere like Birtley House!

Now have a confident approach in following any medication/food intake and look forward to normal life/capabilities.

I needed respite care after having broken my hip and spending two weeks in hospital. The medical/nursing care was excellent. Physiotherapy is excellent with sessions as required. Care support very good - nothing too much trouble. Friendliness and smiles are the spirit of Birtley. Food, very good, always a choice if you do not like options, not always suitable, especially supper (cheese at night?) Soups homemade and good. Altogether a good experience.

My mother has stayed here several times for periods lasting two weeks and sometimes longer. This gives her family and her a bit of a break and she enjoys the change of scene. She particularly likes the beautiful gardens. She has been very kindly treated by all the staff, who are always patient and helpful.

We have visited friends here for many years and have always had a very good impression of the home. Now I have been here for a week as a patient and I could not have had better treatment. More caring and helpful in every way, medically, physiotherapy (especially good), food and all other departments.

Beautiful Birtley House has been home to our mother for the past nine years. The Mews, where she lived from 2010 - 2018, is independent, supported living at its very best. Excellent large and most attractive flats provide an oasis of warmth and care - with superb staff who combine supportive friendship with impeccable, professional practical assistance. As my mother has aged, her needs have become greater and the care provided by Birtley House staff has adapted, seamlessly, to her changing circumstances. She now needs more intensive attention and assistance in a large, light and beautiful room in ‘The Annexe’. The exceptional professional and loving care that is unfailingly provided for her, in difficult circumstances, is extended to all of us. We are privileged to be a part of the extraordinary Birtley family of staff and residents - sharing, joys, sorrows and celebrations, confident in the knowledge that our beloved mother is safe, happy and loved. Thank you.

Birtley House is a warm, happy place. It is a pleasure to visit from the moment you enter the beautiful grounds. We are enormously grateful to all the staff for their care and support, (which extends to us as wider family). We can relax knowing that this is a safe place, where the individual is known and is treated with respect. The kindness of the staff is notable and you get a strong sense of a team that works well together and supports one another. We are very grateful for all it means to us.

My two week stay in Birtley House was a very happy experience. I was treated with great kindness and respect by all members of staff.

Meals were varied, activities took place every afternoon and were very enjoyable.

My room was bright and comfortable.

Cheerful, caring and professional care. I wish the hot drinks had been hot.

They have all made us feel so welcome when we've visited, it has really felt like a big family and everyone is welcome and cared for. They couldn't have done any more to help my mum or the rest of the family.
