Birtley House is an experience that is hard to sum up. I have been in other places that claim care and respect etc but sadly seldom live up to it. Birtley House walks its talk in every aspect. The advantage in my mind, is that it is a family and not a company. This family does genuinely care. The staff are exemplary. They are from all corners of the earth and demonstrate a way of working together that is a joy to watch and be part of. I have never felt so loved and cared for. If I had a house to sell, I would gladly spend the rest of my life in this beautiful place. The grounds are an added bonus.

I booked to stay at Birtley House for one week's convalescence after an operation. My recovery took longer than expected but there was no problem in extending my stay for a further six days. I was grateful for such flexibility. When I arrived I felt awful but my spirits were lifted by the bunch of flowers from the garden, on my windowsill. This exemplified the care and attention to detail from all the staff. Everyone was so kind.
Thank you very much indeed for your lovely comments about the staff, and I am very pleased you are happy here. Best wishes.
My 86-year-old mother stayed at Birtley House Nursing Home for a few weeks while recovering from an emergency operation and had a wonderful experience. She was delighted by the beautiful grounds, warm atmosphere and the impressive house itself. She had a very comfortable room and all her needs taken care of, as well as opportunities to engage in interesting activities like gardening club, cream teas and quizzes. Moreover, she found the staff to be extremely kind and attentive. I would highly recommend Birtley to anyone looking for similar care.
Thank you very much for your comments, we are very pleased that your mother’s stay with us was a happy and helpful one and I will pass on your kind words to the rest of the staff.
I was very well looked after needing my respite care. Everything was very well organised and the staff were unfailingly helpful. I would recommend Birtley House to anyone.
Thank you for your kind words. We are very pleased you chose Birtley House for your respite care and enjoyed your stay with us.
I have now stayed at Birtley House on two occasions following hospital stays. On both occasions, I have been very well looked after. The staff have been extremely professional and very friendly catering to all my needs and concerns. I would not hesitate to stay there again if the situation arises, providing, of course, that they had space and were not full, they would always be my first choice.
We are delighted Birtley House could help provide such a positive experience. We always aim for our home to feel like the residents' own home. I will pass your kind comments on to our team, thank you. Jennifer.
A really friendly, family owned and well-run care home. The overwhelming feeling when you are there, is a genuine sense of warmth and affection.
Thank you for your kind comment, we always strive to ensure our residents feel welcomed and a part of Birtley House life. It is lovely to know the staff and atmosphere have achieved this for you. Kind regards Jennifer
My mother has been at Birtley for seven years. During that time, she has received care of the highest standard from staff, who she is very fond of, as she says every time I see her. Her room looks south and west and has views that even surpass the one she saw for 50 years in her own home.
Thank you so much for your comments. We are very happy to have your mother as a resident with us. We will pass your kind words on to our staff and gardeners. Kind regards.
I had an excellent respite stay at Birtley House after an operation in the hospital, and I was most impressed by the professionalism of the staff and the way even the most difficult patients were treated. All needs were met with a smile, and the care staff were only too pleased to enter into conversations to make sure all was well. Well done to everyone; even the management knew every client.
Thank you very much for your kind comments - we are very glad you enjoyed your stay with us.
It would be difficult to convey how glad and grateful I am to have my home in Birtley House. Their core values - kindness, integrity, positivity and adaptability are lived in admirable ways. In lovely surroundings and friendliness all round. I have found happiness and peace of mind.
We are all delighted that you are happy here and that Birtley House feels like home. Thank you very much indeed for your lovely comments Kind Regards, Jennifer.
I was on three-week respite care and found everything to the highest level, the food was particularly good and the attention excellent. The three weeks were just what I needed to recover from major surgery.
Thank you for your kind words, which we will pass on to the team. We are very pleased you enjoyed your stay. Kind regards, Jennifer.
The Birtley House Nursing Home staff have shown the utmost level of care and flexibility in supporting the transition of my father to residence. All staff members have been absolutely wonderful and have taken care of everything, above and beyond our expectations. The room is lovely, the food excellent and Dad is very happy there.
Thank you for your kind comments. We feel very privileged that you chose us at Birtley, as we are very much enjoying having him here. Kind regards
I was on three-week respite care. The environment (lanes or lawn, gardens) has lots of walks; ideal for residents. Wonderful, friendly attention, physio available. Menu was first class. The three weeks were just what I needed to recover from major surgery and subsequent complications.
Birtley is so pleased you are back on your feet and on the road to recovery. We have always believed in the well-being benefits of being outside within nature. We will pass your comments on to our gardening team and our in-house chef. Thank you for posting such a lovely review. Kind regards.
From the moment of first contact, everyone at Birtley House was amazingly helpful, kind and considerate. My father was convalescing after a spell in hospital, needing to build up his strength before going home. The care he received was excellent throughout. Every member o staff is friendly, welcoming and supportive. It felt as though he was part of a very happy family. Thank you so much, Birtley House, for helping us navigate so easily through a difficult time.
We are delighted Birtley House could help provide such a positive experience for your father, whilst reassuring you he was in great hands. We always aim for our home to feel like the resident's own home, and we are pleased you agree. I will pass your kind comments on to our team. Thank you.
At first, I was unable to walk properly even with the aid of a rollator walker. Due to regular physiotherapy, good nursing, excellent food, cheerful, attentive and caring staff I flourished and I was able to walk with my rollator without pain both inside and outside when I left.
Thank you very much for your comments, we are so pleased that your stay with us was a happy and helpful one, and I will pass on your kind words to the rest of the staff.
All the staff, in whatever role, go above and beyond to help residents and their families in everything. The kindness and care is amazing, they treat the residents like they would their own family. They strive to improve and help in every way.
Thank you so much for your comments. We will pass your kind words on to our staff. Kind regards, Melanie
Birtley House looked after my mother for more than 5 years, treating her with dignity and affection.
My mother has been a resident at Birtley House for 4 years. She has completely made it her home. The loving care she receives from all the staff is exceptional. I live in Oregon so it is so reassuring for me to know that my Mum is cared for and loved with the dignity and respect that every Mum deserves. The staff always go above and beyond in their care for Mum and in their transparent communication of her day to day situation to my sister and me. During Covid, Birtley House has implemented many ways for family members to keep in contact with their loved ones, including FaceTime and Zoom visits. They have made iPads available, increased their internet services and implemented highly creative one on one and small group activities with residents, while always maintaining safe social distancing and strict Covid precautions. Despite the unprecedented circumstances of Covid, the staff have tried diligently and selflessly to maintain a sense of normality for their residents.
I was recovering from a hip replacement and I cannot but praise the care and attention I had. I am 94 and I needed a lot of care.
Thank you for your kind words. We're so pleased to hear about your experience at Birtley House. Best wishes, Melanie
It was such a relief for us to know that we could relax and have respite ourselves, knowing that my mother was in such safe, capable and caring hands. The view from her room was stunning. Thank you.
Thank you for your kind review. We are so happy to have been able to help and glad you got some respite too whilst your mother was being cared for. Best wishes, Kerry
My father’s recent two-week stay was just what was needed. He really enjoyed the break from looking after himself as well as having some medical attention. The entire team, from the physio to the head of nursing and the local doctor were all fantastic. For the first time, they put the jigsaw puzzle of my father’s health together in a very satisfactory manner.
Thank you kindly for taking the time to leave a review on your experience with us. I am so pleased to hear that your father's stay was as you describe and that he enjoyed his time here. Best wishes, Kerry.

Meet the Team (3)

Sylwia Indycka has a full Nursing background as well as previous care home management experience. A proud member of the Birtley team since July 2018, she joined us during a period of business innovation and change and has inspired and led her team to success in various ways.
Sylwia is a positive character with various dimensions to her leadership, she goes the extra mile to always make sure our Residents are getting the most out of life and experiencing new things, whilst teaching her team to do the same. She has also written a book on end-of-life care following her own personal experience of caring for a close family member.

Qualifications: University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Romania, General Nurse qualifications in 2014, maximum degree.
Written by our Registered Manager, Vio was a finalist for the 'Frontline Leader of the Year' award at the Surrey Care Awards in 2019.
I met Viorica when I joined Birtley House in July 2018, it didn’t take me long to recognise her skills and abilities. In this short time, she proved to me her dedication, commitment, organisational and strong leadership skills.
After witnessing Vio’s work ethic, and the influence she has on others in the nursing team, general hard work, commitment and positive attitude to change, I chose to promote Vio to Clinical Lead in the Spring of 2019. Vio’s attitude is always positive and she is strategic in her approach to completing tasks. I have seen days where she might be facing a deadline, but she will continue to motivate others, find the paths of least resistance, and prioritise accordingly. Great skills to have in a reactive role such as nursing.Vio has raised the visibility of a smile around the home and she faces her duties with a focus on compassion and an open mind and she treats everybody fairly. Her passion and consistency support our home all the time.
Our latest CQC inspection on 7th June this year was of course unannounced and a first for Vio. She was a great support to me during this time, as I knew I could trust that she would be calm and professional. She was, and she reassured the three inspectors with her skills and knowledge. She was able to navigate them through the day with a great attitude, and she showed pride in her work as she found them the evidence of things that they requested.
Vio’s caring personality allows her to graciously and naturally respect resident’s values and respond actively to other people’s needs. Vio always wants the best possible outcomes for residents and staff. She genuinely, really cares and wants to make a difference.
As a qualified nurse myself and now an experienced Care Home Manager, I have learnt that to deliver good, quality, person-centred care and effective compassion, the nurse in question is required to use their head and heart. I have witnessed this quality in Viorica on numerous occasions, and she sets great examples for the team around her.
Every time I implement new innovations or a change Vio adopts a positive approach towards learning and embraces the challenge, because she wants to grow in her skills and knowledge, and she wants to be the best version of herself for the home.
I think that nothing can reward nursing practice as much as the feeling you get when you know that you are being the nurse, and the person, that you want to be – I strongly believe that Vio actively practices being this person. It takes courage and self-management to respond to people who are distressed and vulnerable, to advocate patient care or to challenge and change practice and Vio each time can deliver all.
I am very pleased to have Vio in my nursing team- she is truly a rising star in the nursing industry because of her dedication, kindness, attention to detail and empathetic compassion.

Hello, I'm Rudo and l have been a nurse for 14 years.
I started at Birtley House as a healthcare assistant and it really motivated me to pursue my nursing career. Having grown up living with my Grandmother, my passion is taking care of older people. Just after qualifying as a nurse, I went on to study a module at Brighton University which explored perceptions of ageing and why we should care for our elders in certain ways. Being able to apply this to my Nursing qualifications was perfect for the career that I have chosen, and which I love. I have been at Birtley House for around 18 years and only stepped away once for a short stint in a hospital environment to wider develop my knowledge and experience.
