A great find - Being responsible for organizing the care for a family member is a tough one when you have no experience of the care system. From the moment I contacted Debi and her team they couldn't have been more helpful - I was super impressed with the timely responses and above all the sense of
care. This made the while process so much easier. I visited and my care is now in a lovely room with the most delightful staff, and a very impressive food offer, it has made a difficult situation so much easier with their help.

Our mum was a resident at Merlewood for 3 1/2 years and we are so pleased that we found such a wonderful care home. Many of the staff are long serving and that continuity is so vital when you are elderly. The grounds are beautiful, well maintained and accessible by wheelchair. Management are available
and always respond quickly to queries. The cleaners work tirelessly to maintain very high standards in residents rooms and communal areas and are always polite and cheerful. Our mother transitioned to nursing care earlier this year and we were grateful that although her care needs increased that we did not need to move her and she could remain at Merlewood. Carers and nurses are kind, respectful and compassionate and interact with residents with respect and dignity. There is a wide variety of activities and events, something for everyone from summer fairs and dog shows to themed dinners and live singers. A very special place.

My husband needs nursing care - and here at Merlewood he gets that. The nurses and carers are so compassionate and treat their people with dignity and kindness. It is so good to see the same carers and nurses to help continuity and less confusion. When dealing with people who cannot do the most basic
things it takes very special people. My only negative is that at weekends it can seem like the staffing levels are much lower and standards slip. Possibly a weekend manager? The catering varied and always good choice. Wonderful cleaning and laundering. Garden a joy!
Reply from Debbie Vellender, General Manager at Merlewoodthank you for taking the time to review you experiences of Merlewood and the team. Please be assured weekend staffing numbers are no lower than during the week. We acknowledge your comment about weekend manager,

My mum has been a resident at Merlewood for just over 2 years. The setting is gorgeous and the staff are amazing, from management, nursing, care team , chefs, housekeeping and activities. Mum always has something to attend or trips out and she has been involved in some great activities and days out.

Special thanks to the Manager and her whole team who are all fantastic with mum and with me as well and have all become more like friends (and thanks to everyone else )

Merlewood provided end of life care for my mother and the staff were amazing. Nothing was too much trouble, everyone was kind and patient. My mum passed peacefully with dignity, and I felt the staff handled a difficult situation with care and compassion. Also, as a relative I was consulted and kept
informed at every stage. Everyone I interacted with, from housekeeping and admin to nurses and managers provided a professional service that I was extremely happy with.

On my first visit to Merlewood I was straight away drawn by the relaxed atmosphere and friendship of all the staff, so much that I did not need to look elsewhere. The other draw was the beautiful gardens and the layout of accommodation which perfectly suited my needs to walk about safely on my very
new hip both indoors and out. The lovely staff were all so good humored, proficient and patiently caring. I was impressed by and enjoyed the wide choice of freshly prepared meals served in the dining room or the bedroom, and it was good to socialise with fellow residents at the daily activities as I felt stronger. I have many happy memories of my stay. Thank you Merlewood.

My mother has been living at Merlewood for nearly 18 years. The attention to her care has been excellent throughout.
The staff have always been very caring, and keep in contact with me over all issues relating to her care.
What is exceptional I find is that most of the staff have been working there
for many years, ensuring that a good relationship is built up with the residents.
I cannot recommend Merlewood more highly also thank you to the management.

On arrival, you are met by friendly, helpful, smiling, and cooperative staff. I have met the full spectrum of staff from senior manager to hairdresser, nursing staff, carers, entertainers, gardeners, general maintenance, chefs, cooks, housekeepers, cleaners, the visiting GP and no doubt many more. All
of them have been excellent. It feels like a home/hotel set in beautiful grounds. The food is very tasty. The visiting physiotherapist has helped my mother's pain and shown great care. Thank you to all.

After 2 months in hospital with severe pneumonia, I felt my husband needed some general rehabilitation, exercise and a routine to encourage his motivation before returning home with a care package. This, we found at Marlewood. I hoped to have him home before Christmas, our sons were visiting from overseas,
for a couple of weeks, but another chest infection caused me to put out plans on hold, disappointing for all of us. My husband was well cared for in the safety of the care home. Earlier the home had helped us celebrate our Diamond Wedding Anniversary, as were many other relatives to join in with the various planned seasonal celebrations and activities. This made for a memorable happy time for my husband, our sons and myself.
#With many thanks to Merlewood, all it's staff who were understanding, helpful, kind and polite. Well done Merlewood.

Well, what can I say, but a big thank you, for being so understanding of not only our mother's needs, but ours as well. Always a cuddle on offer and the staff are so willing to comfort with kindness when needed. I feel part of the family here, and I know my sister feels the same. We chose the best place
ever to leave our Mum, as the care is more than outstanding!
Well done to you all for all your dedication and hard work, well deserving of all the praise.

Happy we chose Merlewood for my uncle. The admission process was quick and efficient. It has a friendly and homely atmosphere, the staff are helpful and encouraging. I'm updated on any medical issues. There's a wide range of activities, he particularly enjoys the weekly quiz and exercise class. His

Both my parents are at Merlewood Care Home. I think that it is a wonderful Care Home, with very caring. hardworking and talented staff who do everything possible to ensure the safety, well-being and happiness of the residents. Merlewood is very well managed. There is a lovely atmosphere at home and
enjoy going there to visit my parents there. There is always a real buzz to the place and a warm welcome. If you join my parents for lunch the food is always delicious, with a very good choice of menus. The nurses and carers are excellent and very attentive. In all fields, if you have any requests or need to raise issues, they are always promptly addressed, and there is flexibility. The grounds are wonderful and some rooms have a garden or courtyard view. There are activities in the morning and afternoon each day and also outings, fairs and parties. Merlewood provided a beautiful room for us to celebrate my Mum's 90th birthday and provided the food, cake and fabulous decorations at a very reasonable rate. I am grateful to the staff for their excellent care and support.

Everyone made my mum feel welcome. It was a respite stay and it was her first experience of a care home and she felt relaxed and happy from the start. She joined in all the activities and even though her vision is very poor she was encouraged and supported in the games/quizzes so as not to miss out.
She loved the flower arranging and musical sessions particularly. It was very reassuring for us to know her 'care' was thoughtful and professional.

I came here early in September and in the bathroom found that the toilet only flushed when it felt like it. After 3 weeks, new parts were obtained and fitted (thank goodness). In the basin, the plug hole is disgusting and cannot be fixed. I cannot plug in my toothbrush i.e. bathroom not good.
The food
is not good either and breakfast and supper were brought to my room with things missing and not as requested. Food in the dining room was not special at all, very disappointing. I've come from another care home which was excellent.
Reply from Debbie Vellender, General Manager at MerlewoodThank you for your feedback, I am sorry Merlewood appears to have not met your expectations. I have reviewed your comments. I am sorry that you feel the meal experience wasn't what you expected. I understand that you met with the kitchen team several times, we want to support you to enjoy your dining experience. Your concerns have been shared with the Chefs. Ongoing feedback is welcome. I understand your bathroom was checked as working on the day after your admission, an adaptation has been installed to support ease of use for the toilet/sink with no fault noted at time of inspections. Unfortunately the parts took longer than expected to arrive for the adaptation. I am sorry that your toothbrush plug does not fit in with the sockets in Merlewood and we are awaiting an adapter to address this. Home management are available to discuss any unrectified issues with you. I am aware you took the opportunity to meet our Director of Operations on 26.9.24 and provide your feedback.

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.752)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.752) out of 10 for Merlewood is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 24 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 23 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.752 for Merlewood is calculated as follows: ( (229 Excellents x 5) + (44 Goods x 4) + (12 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 286 Ratings = 4.752
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Merlewood is based on 23 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 54 registered maximum number of service users is 10.8, which has been reached with 23 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: General Manager Joined: 2013

Debbie trained as a nurse at St George’s Hospital, Tooting and Queen Mary’s Hospital, Roehampton in the 90s. This was followed by over 20 years of nursing in the NHS, mainly within Medical and Elderly care, working her way to the position of Advanced (Clinical) Site Practitioner at a large local hospital. It was during this time that Debbie’s passion for care of the elderly blossomed, along with the personal fulfilment of getting to know people in her care and their families.

Debbie moved into Social Care at Merlewood in 2013 as Deputy/Clinical Care Manager to use her skills and experience in a different aspect of elderly medical care. In 2019, Debbie became General Manager of the home. Debbie gets huge satisfaction from leading a team of like-minded, compassionate individuals; Merlewood residents and staff have become a second family to her.

I started my nursing career at 'The Berkshire College of Nursing and Midwifery' in 1992, I qualified in 1995.
After qualifying as a nurse, I worked in various hospitals but predominantly in the cardiology departments.
I eventually left the NHS after 15 years to pursue a career in the care home sector.

Initially, I was employed as a Deputy Manager, but soon I was promoted to the General Manager.

I came to work at Merlewood as the Unit Manager on McAlpine in 2015. I loved the role and the home, but left for a promotion.

However, I returned to Merlewood as the Clinical Care Manager in April 2022.

Working at Merlewood Care Home is so satisfying. The staff and residents are very special people.

This shift to a more management-focused position led me to my role with EFH as the Hotel Services Manager at Merlewood, where I now oversee the Housekeeping and Catering teams.

My role focuses on ensuring that our residents receive the best possible service from each of my departments every day.

Job Title: Maintenance Officer Joined: 2023

I look after a small maintenance crew that maintains Merlewood’s incredible 23-acre gardens and supports our 54 residents.

I thoroughly enjoy my varied work here at Merlewood Care Home — every day is different and satisfying in so many ways.

Our maintenance team ensures the building, grounds, and equipment are safe, functional, and comfortable for both residents and staff. I always recognise that this is our residents’ home, and my goal is to help them enjoy the comforts they deserve while our team quietly takes care of the chores in the background.

I have worked in the care sector for nearly 20 years. It's a very rewarding industry to work in.
I specialise in Sales and Marketing. I have taken many courses to improve my skills and knowledge.
I initially started my career in recruitment, owning several recruitment agencies before I moved to the Hotel Industry as a Sales and Marketing manager, eventually becoming a Sales Director for a small chain of hotels.
I was then 'headhunted' by a care provider and soon realised this was the career path that I thrived in.
Listening and understanding a potential resident's wants and needs for the next chapter of their life is a great honour and a huge responsibility.
I have worked for many of the large corporate providers, but I am currently enjoying working for this fabulous, smaller charity/provider that is resident-led.
Elizabeth Finn is a 'Profit for Purpose' business.

In my spare time, I enjoy my family, friends and walking my large Golden Retriever.
