We visited our friend who is a resident at the home. We had a spare hour so we popped in for a surprise visit. As usual, the staff were welcoming and friendly. We were all offered a cup of tea and they found us a lovely spot in the lounge so we could sit and talk to our friend.

We left feeling very happy that our dear friend was happy and being so well looked after.

My father had excellent palliative care the staff were very patient with his fussy ways and accommodating and always kept me up to date. I don’t however feel the doctor from local surgery made enough visits and was dismissive.

Thank you for your review. I will ensure that your comments regarding the surgery are fed back to the practice manager. We were very privileged to look after your father and will miss you all greatly. Do pop in to see us anytime.

It feels slightly weird, reading lots of other glowing reviews of Dudwell St Mary and knowing that although I recognise many elements of other reviews, our experience was hugely out of line with others. I would hope that it was a 'one-off'.
Dudwell St Mary has a very nice ambience, great location, the staff are lovely, smiles abound and yet, in our case the care just was not there. Our family group has considerable experience of care and nursing, and a relative recently in other local care home, so our expectations were very realistic.

My mother, very elderly and with dementia, went there from care at home. It was initially to be four weeks respite, with the intention that it would become long-term. In the event, we brought her home after one week. There was a catalogue of failings, they were recognised by senior staff at the time, apologised for, but nothing seemed to get better. Effective communication between staff seemed to be almost entirely missing.

Reply from Emma Rich-Spice, Senior General Manager at Barchester Dudwell St Mary Care Home

Thank you for this review. We are sorry to read this feedback so long after your mothers stay. I do agree there were areas of improvement taken and found during her stay and as promised and as discussed the clinical team worked with the care team to resolve the difficulties that were found. Sadly...

Every single person on the team at Dudwell St Mary was outstandingly caring, from our first day onwards. We couldn’t have asked for more. The team really cared for my father, giving him all the care, attention and support that both he and we needed. I couldn’t recommend the team and facility more highly for those in need of the care that Dudwell St Mary offers.

Mum needed respite care at short notice, and the management couldn’t have been more helpful at a time of considerable familial stress. On admission, the staff executed their process with considerable care and attention to detail, and we left the home very assured about Mum’s safety and comfort. Throughout her 11-day stay, she was kept comfortable in high-quality surroundings. But most striking was the quality of the staff. Nursing, care, support, estates, admin: everyone we met went out of their way to make Mum’s stay as comfortable as possible, which allowed the family to make the necessary arrangements at home free from worry. It’s invidious to single out staff members for particular praise each was superb. Those who between us we can recall include, excellent senior management; The gentleman in estates; nurses and the lady in care/support and everyone else who made this respite stay so successful.

Reply from Emma Rich-Spice, Senior General Manager at Barchester Dudwell St Mary Care Home

Barchester Dudwell St Mary Care Home was superb in our hour of need. My mum wanted to move out of hospital for her last days of life.
Her needs were complex however the staff made huge efforts to understand her care needs and give her the most comfortable, dignified end.
Not only was Mum cared for but the staff cared for us too. Nothing was too much trouble. Having a comfortable place to sit, drink tea and discuss care needs was so important after being in an open hospital ward for two weeks. The clinical lead was exceptional, understanding our family's needs for information and providing it in a clear and considered way.

The clinical lead and the whole Dudwell St Mary team are the best and we owe them a huge debt of gratitude.

Reply from Emma Rich-Spice, Senior General Manager at Barchester Dudwell St Mary Care Home

Dear Johnathan, thank you so much for your kind words of which I will share with the team. We were only too pleased to support Mum with her wishes and feel honoured and privileged to have been chosen to do so and to look after her and you all. Our deepest condolences and love we send at this time.

My mother’s stay at Dudwell St Mary was sadly too short. We moved her from hospital for end-of-life care.
From my first phone call to her sad death, everyone was so kind, helpful and could not do enough for my family.
This really is a special place, on the top of the ridge in Burwash.

Thank you to all the staff - you made a difficult time easier.

Visited today to see a client I used to care for! The home is very warm and welcoming, staff are always available to help and guide you to where you need to go, refreshments offered and the offer of sitting in a lounge instead of their bedroom, which we took the offer of and was pleasantly surprised with how comfy and homely the area was. To see my ex-client happy and smiling was lovely to see.

The nursing and care teams looked after my mum at Barchester Dudwell St Mary Care Home for several months. She received genuinely excellent care which I witnessed on many occasions at first-hand. It was refreshing to see such kindness shown to someone, my mum, who could be difficult (she had advanced dementia) and I know Mum grew to be very comfortable in this environment. I could not have wished for more.

Mum has been very happy living at Dudwell. The staff have been fantastic in helping her to transition to a new way of living. Special shout out to two members of staff on the top floor. She enjoyed the activities and felt safe.

She was seen and treated as an individual. Mangement scores relate to an incident specifically.

Our Dad initially moved into Dudwell St Mary for a period of respite after a traumatic six months of ill health and prolonged hospital treatment. After his respite time came to an end he decided to become a permanent resident. As a family, we cannot fault the excellent care that our Dad is receiving. He often remarks on how happy and settled he feels and he certainly looks better than he has for a long time. My husband has had two respite stays at Dudwell St Marys, one of one week and one of two weeks. I have had other experiences of care homes with my parents and Dudwell St Marys far exceeds those. All of the staff are friendly, caring and efficient. The standard of care is excellent and the facilities are also excellent. My husband enjoyed his stays, bearing in mind that he was reluctant before he was admitted. I would have no hesitation in using Dudwell St Marys again.

Anthony Butler
Anthony ButlerJob Title:General ManagerJoined: 2026

Hi. My name is Anthony Butler, and I am the General Manager at Dudwell St Mary.

I have been working for Barchester Healthcare since 2011. I started my journey as a Carer at Dudwell St Mary's all those years ago. I progressed to become a South Operational Trainer for the Company, and in the following years, I completed my Level 5 management training.

In 2024, I was promoted as the new General Manager at our sister home, Lydfords, and now it is wonderful to do a full circle, and I am back here within the Dudwell family as the now current GM.

I am dedicated to supporting our staff to deliver excellent person-centred care to all our residents and families.

Orlando Chin
Orlando ChinJob Title:Clinical Deputy ManagerJoined: 2026

When people ask me what I do, I often smile before answering.

Yes, my job title is Clinical Deputy General Manager, but what I really do is help people — residents, families, and colleagues — navigate some of the most important moments in their lives.

I started my career as a nurse at the National Health Service for 15 years, driven by a passion for patient care and a belief that healthcare should be as much about kindness as it is about clinical excellence. Over the years, my desire to work with elderly people I realised that leadership roles gave me the chance to influence not just one resident’s journey, but the systems and teams that care for hundreds every day.

Becoming a Clinical Deputy General Manager was a natural step — it allowed me to combine my clinical expertise with strategic leadership, ensuring that our services are safe, effective, and truly patient-centred.

The role can be demanding, balancing operational pressures with the need to maintain high-quality, compassionate care is not easy, but the rewards are immense, seeing the resident journey, being supportive, watching a team member grow in confidence, or implementing a change that improves safety for everyone.

Healthcare is evolving rapidly, and so is the role of a Clinical Deputy General Manager. From digital transformation to new models of care, there’s never been a more exciting — or important — time to lead.

For me, it’s not just a job. It’s a privilege to be part of a team at Barchester that makes a real difference every single day and also providing a premium caring experience, which is delivered by our team to those we care for.
