Overall Experience 2.0 out of 5
My father was admitted to Elstree in September 2022 still with 'capacity' but mobility problems. He died 3 months later. He was in an attic room, with no working lift to access lower level floors where activities took place. He was bedbound. Had 2 falls and 2 hospital admissions in 2 months following
falling out of bed/chair. He was isolated in the attic room with no passing people to stimulate a once interested, intelligent man. He cried when I left him on one of my visits to him which was just so sad to experience. He was unhappy with being hoisted by certain staff. He wasn't happy at all sadly. Despite lots of emails to the manager about this issue and that issue (there were many) he wasn't able to move to a more central room on the ground floor which is what the family who pre-visited were shown where they had hoped he would be encouraged to engage in activities and talk with other residents. They were so sad when they saw where he ended up. He literally went downhill from admission.
Reply from Julie Caygill, Hospital Liaison Team Administrator at Elstree Court Care HomeWe sincerely apologise about your concerns raised. I have reviewed the communication that we had through emails before your father’s admission to our care dated 9/08/22. I had sent photos of the room pre-admission, and you and your family agreed to proceed with the admission. It was so unfortunate that after few days of his admission our lift broke down, and it did take a while to get fixed due to the inability to obtain parts. We had put an hourly check in place for your father for his safety and wellbeing. At that time, we continued to communicate with emails and phone calls to give you an update and address your concerns. For residents that are not able to attend small group activities, we provided a 1:1 activity and in review with our communications, our activity coordinator shared with you some photos where your father was participating in a 1:1 activity. Regarding your father’s falls, he slid from his recliner chair which I did discuss with you at the time and suggested that the recliner chair was not suitable for his needs. We provided an alternative comfortable chair that was more suitable for him which did prevent further slides or falls. Unfortunately, there was a general decline in his conditions related to his medical problems. A GP had been sought to review and advised hospital admissions for further treatment. There was no evidence that suggested his death was related to any falls. Once again thank you for letting us know about your concerns, as they do help us to make improvements in our homes. I hope from my response that you feel I have appropriately responded to your concerns and acted as necessary.

My father moved into Elstree Court Care Home at the end of December. After a short review period, he was moved to a large ground floor room and began to be included with other residents into the garden lounge to join in the daily activities which he takes full part in and enjoys. He says the food is
good and the carers are very good. On arrival, he was more or less bedbound and sleeping most of the day on palliative care. he is now helped to get up and dressed every day and has a new lease of life. His care has been excellent.

Very caring and attentive staff. Do anything for you. I had some family issues and as power of attorney had to protect my grandmother from family. The home were very empathetic to our needs, listened and acted appropriately. Lovely facilities, like home from home.

I am a resident here. I must say I am very happy at the way I am looked after. The staff are caring and happy and I feel like I am part of a big family. Nothing is too much trouble and the carers are there if you need any help or if not you know you can also buzz for anything at any time. I look forward
to spending the rest of my years at Elstree.

I have been satisfied with all the help that is offered. It has been a very difficult time with all the staff changes and all the masks worn etc but they do their best. It's not an easy task but am wishing for a better future for all of us.

I always find the staff very friendly when I visit and my sister looks well cared for. She lacks motivation due to her depression and I know she can sometimes be difficult to manage in the way of cleaning her teeth etc. It needs special care and patience at all times and I value the fact that the carers
are kind and patient with her even though they are very often extremely busy and time is precious to them. The activities lady tries hard to get her to join in with the others but so far it has not happened - not for the want of trying on her behalf.

My brother appears to have settled well in Elstree Court, he has praise for the carers and enjoys the food made available to him. However, my sister and I have found ourselves having to approach the care staff with issues that should have been noticed by them. The point is that if we were not advocates
for him, would these issues be overlooked?
Reply from Diane Kerwin, Hospital Liaison Team Administrator at Elstree Court Care HomeThank you for your kind comments regarding the home, and we are sorry that not everything was as expected. Thank you for meeting with me to discuss the issues and we are pleased that your brother is settled, is happy, and that the issues are now resolved. If there is anything else that you would like to discuss then please feel free to contact me, I look forward to seeing you in the home again soon.

Current Review Score: 9.7 (9.694)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.694) out of 10 for Elstree Court Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 15 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.9 out of 5 from 15 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.819 for Elstree Court Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (147 Excellents x 5) + (28 Goods x 4) + (2 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 177 Ratings = 4.819
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.875 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Elstree Court Care Home is based on 15 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.875
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 41 registered maximum number of service users is 8.2, which has been reached with 15 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
