I would like to express my immense gratitude to all the staff that welcomed and cared for my dearest mother during her last weeks at Pendean House. The experienced nurses and cares ensured she was kept comfortable and pain-free - being treated constantly with dignity, patience, and compassion. The housekeepers
carried out their duties in her room with gentle and timely consideration. Personally, all staff made me feel part of my mother's care and the reception and kitchen staff made me feel so welcome and cared for too from the outset. Finally, I'll be eternally grateful for the care given by the 3-night staff who were with her at the peaceful end of her life.

Pendean is an excellent house and I am more than pleased to have found it. I can give it good or excellent in the ratings below. In particular I appreciated the friendliness of the staff and their willingness to help. I was given a choice of rooms and got the one that most suited my needs. I came in
for a fortnight to recuperate after surgery and I very much recommend everyone in the same position to do the same. Whether it is for a long or a short stay, Pendean goes to the top of the list and deserves serious consideration.

We arrived intending to take my aunt to the pub for lunch but she preferred to stay in her room and ordered sandwiches for us, plus some wine! All done with good humour and consideration. The staff who attended to my aunt were all friendly and appeared to be pleased to help. The room was clean and tidy
and the garden outside her room was very pleasant and colourful.

We are thrilled that your Aunt is enjoying her time at the home, so much so that she prefers to take lunch there! Mum has been living a happy contented life, knitting, gardening and seeing he friends, but as she got older she became fearful of things she didn't understand, especially modern technology, and it was clear she needed help.
Although the move to Pendean was a huge step she accepted that this would
be her life now and from the moment she met your receptionist she fell in love with his happy enthusiasm for life and began to feel safe again. She joined in with the games and quizzes, enjoyed the entertainment and liked to sit knitting in the garden room.
Unfortunately, Mum fell and broke her hip which meant she had to be hospitalised and she sadly died the day after the operation from complications. The only regret is that she didn't make it back to Pendean for her final days among the staff she felt were her friends.
I thank every one of the staff there for giving my mum a final burst of happiness.
Reply from Grace Langfield, Customer Service Adviser at Pendean House Care HomeThank you for your kind words. We are really sorry to hear of your loss, but it's reassuring to hear that whilst your mum was in our care, she made friends and was able to enjoy our home and activities that gave her a new lease of life. We hope you can find comfort in knowing your mum received the best possible care and we will certainly pass your comments on to the manager.

Pendean House is in a lovely setting on the edge of a local town, with a wonderful garden. The staff there are very friendly and caring, and we felt our mum was well looked after. The receptionist was particularly helpful and supportive and was instrumental in us making the decision to move our mum

I was very happy with it.
We had a particularly good activities coordinator, the catering was very good. Perhaps I would say that the desserts were a bit too sweet but this is a completely subjective point of view.
It was nice we were offered a choice of what we ate.

I came to stay at Pendean House after a period of 10 days in the hospital. It was a refreshing change. My stay at Pendean House coincided with my 90th birthday and I was treated to a tea party to which my two sons and six grandchildren were made welcome in the lounge and we enjoyed birthday cake together
with the staff looking after us. That leaves me with happy memories.

Read the small print on your contract, written on behalf of my 90-year-old Mother.
My Father died in Pendean at 02:00am on the 29th January, the funeral director had collected him that same morning and I emptied the room of all his belongings at lunchtime. On the 3rd of February, the full charge for
February (over £6000) was taken from my mother's account by direct debit. Two weeks later this money had still not been refunded and is the subject of a formal complaint. In the contract, BUPA stipulates that they will charge three days 'full nursing care' not just for the room following the death of a patient. However, we felt confident that we would receive a full refund for February as January has 31 days and our January payment had been paid in advance. But no this was not the case and the final refund is in dispute. This is not a home that I would recommend for end-of-life care, we only wish we could have moved Dad to a hospice earlier.

My father has been a resident at Pendean House for 9 months.
I cannot speak highly enough about the care he has received.
The staff are always welcoming and friendly. My father is always immaculately dressed and his room is clean and comfortable.
Every effort was made to help him to settle and he
is now very happy.
He enjoys the activities and reports that the food is excellent.
My father really couldn't be cared for in a better place.

My husband does not choose to take advantage of activities. I do understand they are available and more planned. I chose Pendean because it was clean and fresh, attractive rooms and dining.
I ticked satisfactory for food as it appears to fluctuate.
The staff are kind and friendly. Some exceptional
in their care and understanding.
The manager and the receptionist work very hard to make Pendean a friendly, kind place to live for those who need support.

This is a lovely home to be in, set in beautiful grounds.
Staff are hard-working, pleasant and friendly and bearing in mind that we all have different needs and wants, try to respond to us as individuals.
However, they are often under pressure and cannot always respond to calls quickly. Probably
not enough of them, especially at the busiest times of the day. This is particularly difficult for those confined to bed and needing the most help.

There has been a marked improvement since a new manager arrived. Things get done when requested and staff all appear to be happier and more positive. Current Review Score: 9.7 (9.681)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.681) out of 10 for Pendean House Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 34 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 33 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.681 for Pendean House Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (278 Excellents x 5) + (85 Goods x 4) + (12 Satisfactorys x 3) + (4 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 379 Ratings = 4.681
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Pendean House Care Home is based on 33 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 40 registered maximum number of service users is 8, which has been reached with 33 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
