My mother has lived in Barchester Westergate House Care Home for the past eighteen months. She had previously been fiercely independent and found it challenging to accept that she was unable to live on her own. Thanks to the amazing staff who work there, she is now content to call Westergate House her
home.
All the staff have been absolutely wonderful. They always have time for the residents. It could be something as simple as a cheerful word, a smile or a little wave as they go about their work. It all helps to make Mum feel welcome and included on a daily basis.
Reply from Paul Middleton-Russell, General Manager at Barchester Westergate House Care HomeDear Angela, thank you for your wonderfully positive review about your experience of Mum's new home here at Westergate House. It's lovely to hear that you think the team are amazing and I have passed your praise on to them, it really does make a difference when the staff team receive such positive feedback. Mum certainly has made herself at home, her enthusiasm boundless in taking up the role of librarian for her peers in her community, contributing to not only Mum's meaningful occupation; but her neighbours too. It's an absolute joy to support mum in her new home; albeit she has now been with us for over 18 months.

My wife has been a resident at Westergate House for over 9 years and is now in the advanced stage of dementia and requires high-dependency nursing care. Throughout this period I have been impressed with the professionalism and care provided by the excellent team of nurses, carers, caterers, cleaners
and the activity group who are particularly well led by the General Manager - overall they are exemplary. The staff are open and friendly providing loving care for the residents. I have always felt that my wife is safe, and her welfare is in good hands at Westergate House. Most importantly when things occasionally do go wrong, I have been informed immediately and matters have been resolved.
My whole family have confidence in the Westergate House team and we are very grateful for the loving care they have provided.
Reply from Paul Middleton-Russell, General Manager at Barchester Westergate House Care HomeWe are truly humbled by your heartfelt review. It is heart-warming to hear that throughout the many years your wife has resided at Westergate House you have found the care provided by the staff team, whatever their role at the home, to be excellent. We are always transparent, our team require special aptitudes and skills, caring for those living with dementia, as well as a caring and inclusive view of life. Thank you for sharing that you have always felt your wife is safe, and is in good hands at Westergate House. I have passed your praises onto the staff team and I am sure that those in a similar position, as you found yourself in all those years ago, find it reassuring when reading your review.

Mum spent 2 weeks having respite care, this was her first time doing this so we could attend a wedding in Spain and know that she was completely safe, cared for and comfortable.
We were all a little nervous but from the beginning, Westergate House made us feel welcome and spent lots of time with Mum
and adapted her room to meet her requirements with cheerfulness and professionalism. The staff, facilities, ambiance and meals were all excellent and we would thoroughly recommend to anyone thinking of using this care home.
Thank you, especially to the care staff who Mum enjoyed having a laugh with - you’re amazing. Mum loved her stay and I’m sure we’ll be using you again! Best wishes to you all.
Reply from Paul Middleton-Russell, General Manager at Barchester Westergate House Care HomeThank you for your lovely review following Mum’s respite stay with us. It’s lovely to hear that we relieved your nervousness right from the word go and you felt welcome; and of course you as a family were able to enjoy the wedding celebrations in Spain. It was a delight to have Mum stay with us and we are so glad she enjoyed herself; she certainly put a smile on our faces too. It’s so lovely to know you found the whole experience to be excellent, from the staff team, the dining experience and our lovely homely environment. Thank you so much for your recommendation.

Back in May this year my mother and I had to find a nursing home for my dad who was being discharged from hospital. For us as a family, this was a challenging and emotional time as we wanted to do what was right for my father as we knew that his time was limited, so choosing a special place was of paramount
importance for us as a family. After doing some research Westergate House came highly recommended and after a meeting with the manager, staff and viewing the facilities we knew that this would be the right place for my dad.
Right from the moment when my dad was admitted the care, compassion and professionalism shown by all were exceptional. As a family, we were always made to feel welcome and we were always kept informed of how he was doing. For us as a family, we took great comfort knowing that my father was well looked after and we simply can't thank them enough.

It’s humbling to know that you felt our care, compassion and professionalism was exceptional and I have shared your praise with the staff team, we are overwhelmed with your kindness and beautiful words. We pride ourselves in the delivery of care in a holistic manner and that of course extended to you all as a family, so it’s lovely to hear that you all felt welcomed too. It was a privilege to have had Dad here with us; thank you.

From the moment my wife and I walked through the front door on our first visit we found the staff at the home to be very welcoming, kind and extremely professional. It's a beautiful building with lovely grounds. The dining room is laid up like a restaurant and the food is delicious. There is a full
and varied programme of activities the residents can take in if they want or they can just sit back and watch. All the staff have been so helpful in arranging Mum's admittance and looking after her, nothing is too much trouble for them. She has settled in really well and we feel very at home there too, they make us feel part of a family. We have no worries about leaving her there and we thoroughly recommend it.

My mother has been a resident at Westergate Care Home for the last five and a half years. During this time my mother who has advanced Lewy Body Dementia has been cared for amazingly. All the staff employed here go above and beyond their duties to make life at the home as comfortable, safe and secure
as they possibly can. The food menu is outstanding catering for a variety of diets, with the inclusion of soft foods for those residents that have problems with swallowing. My mother has thrived way beyond expectations due to the loving care received at this wonderful care home.
The nursing staff are extremely effective and efficient in what can only be described as a demanding environment and do so with many years of experience, offering compassion and understanding, not only for the residents but also for their families.
I would like to thank all the staff at Westergate for taking such great care of my mother for all this time and would highly recommend this care home.
Reply from Paul Middleton-Russell, General Manager at Barchester Westergate House Care HomeThank you so much for your glowing review of life at Westergate and your praise for the staff team who care for Mum with love, care, compassion and understanding; it is heart-warming to know that you feel this is extended to you and your family also. It's lovely to receive praise for the dining experience too, our team of experienced Chefs ensure every meal is made from the freshest ingredients, and is not only delicious but also reflects personal likes, dislikes and dietary needs, including modified diets through seasonal menus; I know you both enjoy when you visit. I have passed your praise on to the staff team for their care of Mum.

We are overjoyed at what a fabulous Care Home Barchester Westergate House is. There is so much genuine care from all of the staff. We feel like the staff have become part of our extended family, they are so kind and considerate.
Choosing a care home is of course a very difficult thing to have to do
for the first time, as we didn’t know how to assess which place would be best for our much-loved father. We have without a doubt found an extraordinarily great care home. I would personally recommend 300%. This is a very special place and Dad feels very secure at Westergate House. Thank you to the fabulous management, nurses, carers, head carer, activities staff, receptionist and last but certainly not least the fabulous restaurant quality food created by the very talented chefs.
Supremely happy with discovering this Care Home.

already they have become a second family for us all. The care is amazing, the environment comfortable and the food outstanding. I can't recommend them highly enough. Thank you to the whole team.

My mother has been in Westergate House for several years, and the wonderful care and commitment of the staff has meant a great deal to me and my family, which was of particular comfort during these last challenging years of Covid. Being able to join my mother in the imaginative activities organised
by Westergate House has also meant a great deal because my mother has always been and remains a sociable, fun-loving, person. I will particularly treasure the memory of the Jubilee party, which was a fabulous occasion for both residents and families. Mum has been moved to Westergate House from hospital after requiring more nursing care following a fall. My first contact was from the manager whilst mum was in hospital saying they had assessed and accepted her. I was able to meet him and see around the home taking in some familiar items for mums room
to help her settle in. From day one I have had excellent communication and regular updates on mums condition. She is receiving the highest standard of care and is regularly checked on to ensure she is safe and content. Where health issues have arisen the appropriate team have been involved in her care. The staff go above and beyond to ensure mum is happy and comfortable. On each visit, I have been met with smiles and offered refreshments to enjoy with mum. Nothing ever seems to be too much trouble I am confident she is in the right placement getting the care and supervision she requires. Thank you all for your hard work. I would not hesitate in recommending Barchester Westergate house.

Back in 2012, my elderly mother became a resident at Westergate House at the age of 91. Her physical needs and mild dementia made this the sensible course of action and over the years that followed we never had cause to question that decision.
Mum settled into life in the comfortable residential section
and we were immediately impressed by the kindness and care shown to her by all the staff. The facilities were excellent as can be seen from the photos on the home website which clearly show the familiar and comforting atmosphere.
In 2019 as Mums dementia increased the decision was made to move her into a beautiful newly constructed room in the specialised Memory Lane community. We greatly appreciated the regular updates we received through the pandemic while visits were sadly restricted.
When Mum's time finally came to move on her final days were spent with all the love, kindness and dignity she richly deserved. I would happily give Westergate House a five-star recommendation.
Reply from Paul Middleton-Russell, General Manager at Barchester Westergate House Care HomeDear John,
Thank you so much for your heartfelt review and kind words. It was such a pleasure to care for your mother throughout her time at Westergate House and we are all missing her lovely smile. Your mum was a very special lady and was very much part of our Westergate House family. It was lovely to see you and your family on such a regular basis and we appreciated your understanding during the restricted visiting throughout the pandemic. Thank you again for the positive feedback. We truly value your thoughts.
Best wishes and kind regards to you and your family.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.960 for Barchester Westergate House Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (264 Excellents x 5) + (9 Goods x 4) + (1 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 274 Ratings = 4.96
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Barchester Westergate House Care Home is based on 23 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 79 registered maximum number of service users is 15.8, which has been reached with 23 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

If I do that every day to put a smile on our resident's faces then I’m happy I have played my part, along with the rest of the amazing team, to brighten their day.
