Thank you so much for the lovely review of your experience of Westergate House and the care your husband received during his time with us. These reviews are so valuable as they are read by those who are looking for a quality care home for their own loved ones, so we very much appreciate you taking the time to leave your comments.
I would also like to single out one staff member, in particular, who provides outstanding care to mum.

I am 88 and in full procession of my mental faculties and find it frustrating that there are so few residents with whom I can have meaningful dialogue. The staff, however, are first-rate and ensure my sanity! I still have a healthy appetite and find the food rather bland, although I can understand that it is what most very elderly folk like. It could be more imaginative and with more variety thank you. Overall excellent.

Thank you so much for your candid review of your time residing here at Westergate House.Being one of our younger and fitter gentlemen, we understand that you are a social and active individual, whereas generally many others tend to be very private or less inclined to engage on the same level as you like to enjoy. We do very much appreciate you taking the lead in activities such as our Scrabble afternoons and your participation in our choir, as well as leading a beautiful Classical Music afternoon. Following our conversation I understand you have already met with the Chef and considering your personal comments, along with our monthly resident meeting, we are replacing some of our dishes with suggestions directly from you and your peers. We are always open and appreciative of feedback and suggestions from our residents, so thank you again for your comments and we look forward to your continued contribution to life here at Westergate House.

My Dad spent 18 months in Westergate House and I’ve been impressed with the level of personalised care he received. The staff have always been so welcoming, friendly and helpful on my frequent visits. It has been lovely to observe all staff interact with the residents as they go about their work through the different areas of the home e.g. the kitchen staff will communicate with residents by name as they walk through the lounge. There was always a wide variety of good food and plenty of drinks offered to the residents. No matter how busy the carers were, I was always offered a drink. Dad’s end of life care was handled so sensitively it made a sad time easier to cope with. I would have no hesitation recommending Westergate House to anyone. Thank you all.
Thank you for taking the time to write such a lovely review of both your dad's care and your own personal experience as a regular visitor to Westergate. It was a pleasure to have your father reside with us at Westergate and to be able to provide the care he needed in our homely and welcoming community.
Your comments are much appreciated and will be forwarded to our wonderful staff.

My 93-year-old father-in-law was struggling to maintain his own home and stay out of hospital, with a long history of repeated falls and medical issues. We were due to go on holiday in May when another fall led to hospitalisation, three days before departure. The hospital and social services cleared him to leave - on condition that he had support at home. There was little time to organise anything but Westergate House came to the rescue with an offer of respite care. It was a godsend. From first contact, the staff were magnificent, understanding, supportive and kind. The house is in the style of a country hotel, with impressive and comfortable facilities for residents with all sorts of needs. During the time that my father-in-law was there, our family was nothing but amazed at the superhuman efforts that Westergate staff put in to make a difference. I can thoroughly recommend this facility.

Dear ChesterWe cannot thank you enough for your kind and thoughtful words regarding the care your father-in-law received whilst with us at Westergate. It was our pleasure to be involved in his care in his final months. Our aim is always to make the admission process as smooth as possible as we are aware that this can be a stressful and daunting prospect, not only for our residents but for the loved ones involved in their care. Our residents' well-being and comfort is paramount to everything we do and we are proud of our hard-working, compassionate staff, who all help to make life at Westergate a positive experience.
Sending our warmest regards to you and your family.

I am sincerely grateful to Westergate House and all the staff for their care and compassion in helping us through a very difficult time. Although my mum was only with them for a short time - owing only to location and family issues - the manager and all of the rest of the staff bent over backwards to help my mum, myself and the rest of our family. Westergate House sits in a beautiful country area with a peaceful garden and is right opposite the attractive and historic Denman Gardens. I was sad that we had to move mummy away, as I am fully confident that she would have settled and been happily cared for at Westergate. With many thanks and love to you all.
Thank you so much for your thoughtful review of the care and compassion your mum received whilst at Westergate House. We were more than happy to help at a time when it was most needed, and we are glad that she is now settling into our sister home which is more suitably located for you all. We wish you all the very best in the future.
Dad has now been a resident for two whole months and has settled in well. The staff are very caring and attentive and conduct themselves very professionally. We are very pleased with the home and look forward to the restoration work to be completed and to the summer when dad can explore the grounds.

Since August 2017 my father has been a resident here and the home cannot be faulted for the service, care and empathy provided. Whenever visited, the staff always know where my father was and how he was doing. The attitude to him was so caring and encouraging. They have ensured I am aware of any serious falls or if the doctor has been called. I said there was little point in calling me for every trip as this was a regular occurrence. I have no hesitation in recommending this home to anyone wanting a loving place for their relative.
Jean, many thanks for your honest and kind review of the care your father receives at Westergate. Your review is much appreciated.

His appetite has grown tremendously since moving in and he enjoys 3 full meals a day. The food is excellent and varied. Dad is always asked what he would like from the menu. Every courtesy is shown. He says himself "there is no better place" and wishes he had made this move years ago. Westergate House represents peace of mind for the family.
Many thanks for such an excellent review regarding your father's experience of life here at Westergate, as well as your lovely comments regarding his care. Our philosophy includes that we never lose sight of the fact that this is our residents' home, and we offer a caring, safe, homely environment to all who reside here.

My mother initially went to Westergate for respite, following the death of her husband, then settled there. She was looked after very well in these final months and she always spoke highly of the staff, cleanliness and food (especially the soup!). I was kept well informed and the staff, without exception, were always helpful, knowledgeable and supportive, whether contacted by phone or in person. Westergate has a clean, homely, welcoming atmosphere and everyone is really friendly. Mum's visitors were always made welcome and often took lunch with Mum, either in the residents dining room or separately in the conservatory. Mum liked the view of the gardens from her room and enjoyed the occasional trip out, whether taken by us to a nearby tea room or as an outing to a local garden centre. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend to others.
Kind regards,
An outstanding establishment where residents are treated with care and respect by all the staff, who are friendly and professional.

My elderly cousin moved to Westergate House from a care home where she had been bored, lonely and sad. At Westergate House she has regained her old sparkle and has absolutely blossomed. Westergate House Is a gracious regency building which provides a lovely, spacious and peaceful environment where the staff all work together to make a safe and caring home for the residents. My cousin has enjoyed joining in with the varied activities programme, she has made friends, eats very well and always looks relaxed and well cared for. Staff go out of their way to assess and meet the needs of the residents. Over months and years really caring relationships are established so residents feel secure in the knowledge that they are valued individuals with kind and experienced staff ready to help where needed. I enjoy visiting at Westergate House and would be more than happy to live there myself.
Thank you so much for your glowing review of life here at Westergate. We feel passionately about life at Westergate and together we are committed to making a difference for our residents.
Our mother has recently become a resident and our family have been overwhelmed with the level of care provided and the helpfulness of all members of staff. Nothing is too much trouble for anyone.

I have just returned from one week of respite care at Westergate House Care Home. I returned home (to sheltered housing) completely rested in body, mind and spirit. Particularly noticeable was the patience and gentleness of the staff and the relaxed nature of the residents. I felt safe and cared for in a quiet atmosphere. The dining room again was comfortably small and the chefs are to be congratulated on a basic menu well served. End of life can be quite difficult to handle but I think they have the balance about right.

Welcome to Westergate House, my name is Paul and I am the Senior General Manager here.
I have over 35 years-experience within the healthcare profession, working in the NHS, prior to moving to the private healthcare sector in 1996. I have now been with Barchester Healthcare for over 20 years, I feel privileged, that the majority of these glorious years, I have spent as the General Manager here at Westergate House. I am exceptionally proud of the amazing team, of over 100 staff, many of them with their 10, 15 and 20 years-service awards too. My name is Nikki and I am the Deputy Manager here at Westergate House.
I joined the home in 2022 as Clinical Lead and enjoyed supporting the nursing and care team. I work closely with the General Manager, with whom I have forged a strong and positive working relationship, where complete focus on the residents and staff team, and providing a safe and caring environment is a shared priority. As a result, I was thrilled to accept the opportunity to become Deputy Manager at Westergate House and work alongside the General Manager to ensure the home goes from strength to strength in delivering person-centred care, an enjoyable lived experience and a dedicated happy team.
My work history to date includes a career change in 2002 when I decided to join the NHS as a carer. I then commenced my nurse training in 2006 and qualified as a Registered General Nurse in 2009. I now have 15 years of experience, from working in an acute setting as a Ward Sister before deciding to work in the private sector in 2020.
I am a very dedicated and passionate individual, ensuring person-centred care is delivered to the highest of standards for all our residents, I am committed with my team and Westergate to making a difference for the residents who make Westergate their home.
I thoroughly enjoy my role and work with a great supportive and knowledgeable team, no two days are ever the same. There is always plenty happening which makes my role varied and exciting not only for the residents; but the staff team too.

My professional journey, although beginning in pharmacy and later moving into the NHS, has consistently been centred around the well-being and care of patients and residents.
As an Administrator, I see my role as an opportunity to do more than manage operations; it's about helping to build a true community. My goal is to work alongside our dedicated care team to make this a place where our wonderful elderly residents feel a profound sense of belonging. I want every resident to feel as though they are not just in a care home, but truly at home, surrounded by warmth, dignity, and respect. I bring a blend of administrative expertise and heartfelt compassion, believing that these qualities are essential for creating an environment where residents can thrive.

My name is Mel and I am the Head of Nights/ Clinical Lead here at Westergate House.
I am delighted to be working at home and using my work experience to date supporting the Deputy Manager as Clinical Lead to ensure we are always delivering high standards of effective and compassionate care. My role includes leading the night team as the Head of Nights.
I have been a qualified nurse RGN for forty years and have enjoyed an incredible career. My training was completed at Kingston & Richmond Hospital where I stayed for a year after qualifying before working for a number of agencies where I gained a wealth of clinical experience. In 2000 I joined the Sussex Community Foundation Trust as a Clinical Lead and enjoyed working with patients in the community for twenty years. More recently, I have worked as a Registered Manager for a local nursing home which gave me valuable insight into caring for residents with a range of complex and individual needs as well as their GP and multi-disciplinary team to ensure the best possible care.
I am thrilled to have the opportunity to put these skills to use in my role at Westergate House and look forward to working closely with our residents, their families and the exceptional staff team.

My name is Marc and I am part of the nursing team here at Westergate House.
I qualified as a Registered Nurse in 2011 and began my career working for Barchester Healthcare. I spent the first two years working at Llys Y Tywysog Care Home in Wales and then transferred to Westergate House eight years ago.
I am thoroughly enjoying my role here in West Sussex and love caring for our residents. No two days are the same and there is always something fun going on. I enjoyed taking part in the home’s activities and appeared in last year’s panto. I am also a keen member of the Westergate House quiz team!

My name is Rachel and I am the Activities Lead here at Westergate House
I am delighted to work at such a lovely home and to support our residents to do the things they enjoy; it is extremely important to me that we are offering a premium and person-centred service to each resident. I support our residents on a daily basis by providing meaningful and quality activities either in groups or one-to-one, helping to encourage and build individuals’ confidence, while creating an enjoyable environment for everyone. Westergate House is the home of our residents, so it is extremely important to me that we respect their space, while offering unique activity provision to each and every person.
My background includes local charity work and events-planning, for organisations including Sussex Wildlife and Chestnut Tree House. I am eager to find out about our residents’ individual choices and aspirations, and plan to organise activities and outings to meet preferences. Outside of Westergate House homelife is busy with two teenage boys. I enjoy spending time outdoors walking in the countryside, as well as creative activities, to relax and refresh.

My name is Sam, and I am the Head Chef here at Westergate House.
I studied locally at Chichester College and achieved a Level 3 award in Hospitality and Supervision, where all elements of food preparation, cookery and kitchen management were learned. My experience as a chef was gained through working at The Ramblers Roost, a Premium Country Pub, in Coulsden, Surrey, and The Crow and Gate, in Crowborough. I was fortunate to learn from well-travelled chefs who were keen to share their knowledge and breadth of experience during a time when there was autonomy in the kitchen, and creative flair was recognised. At The Crow and Gate, I worked as General Manager and gained skills in managing the staff team and running the kitchen in a senior position. In recent months, it has been my goal to find a role where I can make a difference to people’s lives, and I am absolutely delighted to be working at Westergate House, where engagement with the residents is a priority.
As Head Chef, I appreciate the value of mealtimes and how much they are looked forward to as a very important part of the day. I am focused on providing delicious meals that ensure complete nutrition, making good use of seasonal fruit and vegetables. Together with our exceptional kitchen team, I provide a varied menu, ensuring I listen to the residents’ choices and preferences. We love an event day, of which there are plenty of celebrations at Westergate House, and I am only too happy to cater for open days, community days, birthdays and anything else that is special. Quite often, we explore different themes and enjoy preparing dishes from around the globe; different flavours and ideas which add to the spice of life. If residents and their families or friends fancy dining together, it is a pleasure to prepare for a party, lunch or celebration tea, and visitors to the home are very welcome to help themselves to tea, coffee and cake anytime.
Looking forward, I am keen to develop my skills and will welcome opportunities for personal development. Working at Westergate House is a privilege; I am proud to be part of such a fabulous team.

I spent 24 years working for the Army and feel confident in my unfazed approach to sorting and fixing! An interesting fact travelled the world, and I am the proud owner of memorabilia from 53 Hard Rock Cafes.
While I oversee all things maintenance, part of the pleasure my role brings, is conversing with our residents and sharing stories of travel and careers.
Looking after a beautiful Grade II listed building, part of which is over 200 years old, means no two days are the same.

My name is Cheryl, and I am a Team Leader and the Speak Up Champion here at Westergate House.I have worked at Westergate House for over a decade now and pride myself on offering the best care possible. I endeavour to ensure those I look after continue to live their best life. It is really important to me that residents feel safe and happy within their homes, and I felt the Speak Up role is perfect for me; it helps to ensure this happens.
Our priority at Westergate House is our residents' safety and quality of care. All our staff are encouraged to SPEAK UP internally where there are any concerns in the workplace, and there are a variety of ways that we can do this. We have recently expanded this to allow an internal point of contact within Westergate as an alternative safe person to speak to. As part of my role, I maintain confidentiality and integrity. I am impartial, approachable, inclusive and empathetic. All the skills required to support the home with this new role. This makes it easy for everyone to speak up. This ensures continuity of excellent care to our residents and a positive work environment.

My name is Rachael and I am a Senior Care Assistant and one of the Dementia Champions here at Westergate House.I have worked at Westergate House for over 3 years.
Previously I was a stay-at-home mum with two lovely daughters. During my working career, I spent a decade working for the Police as a Safer Neighbourhood Officer. It was at this time I realised I was committed to making a difference. I pride myself in being approachable, friendly and supportive whilst providing the very best care for the people I look after.
It’s natural to want the very best support for your loved one. And we wouldn’t accept anything less. Caring for those living with dementia requires special aptitudes and skills, as well as a caring and inclusive view of life. As one of the Dementia Champions, I promote Identity, Connections, Security, Autonomy, Meaning, Growth and Joy. We have a good understanding of each resident living in our communities, including their interests, having meaningful conversations, their previous occupations, important people and places to them and their personality traits. We create stimulating environments through meaningful engagement and activities. We see their time with us as the next chapter in their life, and we promote independence where possible; with meaningful occupation each day in our Memory Lane communities.

I have worked in health and social care for over seven years now, the last year of which has been at Westergate House. It has been a pleasure to work with such a fabulous team and to look after our lovely residents. I feel I have settled in well, and I am thrilled to take on additional elements to my role. As Well-being Champion, I am in a position to help and support fellow team members when they need someone to talk to, and to help them manage busy or stressful times. Quite often, it is simply lending a listening ear. I am naturally caring and kind-natured, and I feel privileged to be able to offer team members access to health and well-being opportunities, as well as promote activities within the workplace. In terms of homelife, I have four children and six grandchildren, which has equipped me with skills of patience and understanding; I feel I am an approachable and positive person who can help make a difference. In addition, I raise awareness of the Barchester Well-being policy and promote healthy lifestyles and positive mental health. I am extremely enthusiastic about supporting well-being within Westergate House and love my Champion role.

I have recently started, and I am delighted to have joined the team. With a First-Class Honours degree in Health & Social Care and a wealth of experience in senior care, I chose this role because it gives me quality time to spend with residents, getting to know them while providing friendship and continuity of care. I completed a dissertation in End-of-Life Care as part of my degree, and I have absolute respect for the importance of dignity and choice when a person is nearing the end of life.
