My mother has been a resident since May 2016. She now views this as her 'second home'. She loves her light, roomy, sunny room and loves sitting on her chair on sunny mornings. She describes herself as being looked after well and has developed good relationships with several of the care staff. Although
now very frail, her character still shines through and I like the fact that the staff have encouraged her to be her. We were fortunate to get the room when she needed it and was the right place at the right time.

My husband was admitted to the care home 11th November 2015. He had a brain stem clot 1st October 2015 and was rendered paralysed and double incontinent requiring 24-hour care. The management and staff have been wonderful with my husband and have shown excellent care and consideration to both of us
as sometimes I have down days as it is now 17 months and he was only given 10 months maximum. The staff are pleasant, caring, considerate and medically professional. My job was an assistant manager in a care home so I know what to expect. I cannot praise the home enough. Thank you.

The staff are always friendly when you go there. The someone takes me through the doors that need codes to get through and they take me to where a carer and resident it. They do ask me sometimes if I would like a coffee or tea and the residents are always treated with dignity.

My good friend has been a resident of Cherry Hinton Care Home for 2 years. She uses a wheelchair to get around by herself to the conservatory where she meets friends and watches squirrels antics on the bird table which is close by. There is a TV room, a spacious dining room and plenty of bath/toilet
facilities. (care workers help residents in these facilities and residents may press the call button which they wear around their neck if they require help). There is usually an organised activity every day (exercises, singing, making decorations). Books, games, newspapers are available.

There are comfortable armchairs in the lounge for those who want to watch TV. The hairdresser's room is just off the lounge and is very popular with lady residents who may have their hair washed and styled once per week.
In spring and summer, residents may go out in the garden. There is a summer fete once per year and resident may invite their friends.
The resident cat is very popular.
Outings by car to the botanic gardens are laid on for residents who are able to go. There is a church service every Sunday, to which residents are invited. 3 meals per day are very good. The home is very well organised and I am happy to provide this review.

Very unhappy with the care, especially the cleanliness of my Father is very poor. Even after discussions with the manager who gave an apology and admitted it was unacceptable, it still continues to happen. This undermines everything and has an impact on quality of life. Being clean is a basic human
right. Also issued with dignity. No privacy, not even a lounge where you can relax have a drink and have quality time with your family. There has been issues with cleanliness of the wet room as well.
Reply from RICHARD LAWSON, HOME MANAGER at Cherry Hinton Care HomeI would like to acknowledge the review posted by BB with respect to her Father and his brief time with us in our home. Whilst I cannot agree with the content of the review, I do thoroughly support everyone's right to express their personal views. Equally, I am very pleased to have the opportunity to offer a frank and honest response, and to clarify some of the details raised.
As the Home Manager, I have spent many hours talking and sharing with BB, as I have done and continue to do with all members of our community, be they residents, families and their loved ones or our own team members. I did not have to apologise at any stage for the cleanliness of BB's Father, as this was not an issue. We recognise the crucial importance of cleanliness and indeed dignity to the very essence of the quality of life of each and every one of our residents, and the impact that this also has on their loved ones. It will always continue to be one of our highest priorities.
In more general terms, we are able to offer a number of different spaces for our residents and their families to be able to spend quality time together. There are two different spacious lounges, (including one with a reminiscence 1950's theme), on the first floor, and another well appointed lounge on the ground floor. These are also supplemented by a conservatory which in itself also leads to our extensive gardens offering a lovely space for all to enjoy.
Our home will always strive to offer the dignity, time, respect and the sensitive and appropriate care that our residents and their loved ones deserve and have the absolute right to expect. Equally, respectful and sensitive care is also about maximising and facilitating the choices our residents make, and wherever possible to enable and sustain that process and ability. We also understand that being forced to make a decision on behalf of your Mother, or indeed Father, to perhaps leave family care and their home, and to enter a long term care setting is one of the most emotionally challenging that can be faced in a lifetime... Let's face it, our home is welcoming, friendly, safe, secure and loving, but not the one that folks have spent perhaps the last 30, 40, 50 or 60 years in! Many people express their feelings in many different ways - we get it.
Suffice to say, we are pleased to be able to 'set the record straight', and continue to assure all our residents, their families and loved ones of our total and honest commitment to real quality, real care, and making a real difference to the lives of real people.

My mother has been resident for 4 years at Cherry Hinton. She is treated with respect and dignity, the staff are always talking and joking with the residents. They have activities most days of the week which are varied and designed to stimulate them. Thew food is varied and served in pleasant surroundings,
giving the residents further chance to mix and meet others. I would recommend this home to others and would say it is one of the best in the area.

The home is on two floors. The ground floor, Florence, caters for the more active residents and the first floor for residents with greater needs including dementia and a small palliative care unit. The staffing levels are higher than other similar homes locally, so this is a good choice for residents
who need a lot of support. The staff are unfailingly kind to my mother and there are a lot of activities . There are visiting entertainers, exercise to music and a hairdresser and nail beautician. A local GP does a ward round every Monday and the Hospital is just down the road if anything goes wrong. The only niggles that there is a lot of staff turnover so some of the staff who befriended Mum when she first arrived three years ago are no longer here and she has had to get used to new ones. Food is good with several choices at each meal but the food is often warmish rather than piping hot when served. This is a good choice if your relative has high needs especially dementia.

No complaints as of yet (maybe never). Dad has only been here three months. All the staff are approachable, helpful and appear very professional in their dealings with dad. Cannot thank all the staff of all pay grades for working as a team to make dad and the families experience at this hard time as
pleasant, as I feel it can be all considering, i.e good food, clean and tidy and generally friendly atmosphere. Thank you.

All the staff, management, admin, nursing and care assistant, cleaners and kitchen staff are all very helpful and friendly. My only issue is that at times there are no staff available to help with things like taking dad to the toilet. This is not because the staff are unhelpful or standing around chatting-
just that there are not enough of them.

My father settled quickly. The staff have been helpful, friendly and efficient. The room is a good size and is kept clean. There is a good choice of menu but sometimes the food is not hot, which is disappointing. There is a good variety of activities and they seem well organised. The management team
have been helpful and sympathetic. Taking everything into account I would say I am happy with my fathers care and would recommend this care home to others.

Current Review Score: 10.0 (9.956)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 10 (9.956) out of 10 for Cherry Hinton Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 5.0 out of 5 from 43 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 43 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.956 for Cherry Hinton Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (484 Excellents x 5) + (18 Goods x 4) + (2 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 504 Ratings = 4.956
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Cherry Hinton Care Home is based on 43 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 60 registered maximum number of service users is 12, which has been reached with 43 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
