My father had been a resident of Hawthorns for almost 10 years before his recent passing.
It's a very painful process putting your loved one's into a care home setting and naturally you want the very best for them. Sometimes the all singing and all dancing settings do not always show the empathy, care and compassion that the staff give 100% daily. Hawthorns is this care home that gives, hourly, daily , yearly and so on.
If I could give Hawthorns a gold award for their care of my father over these years I would do so one hundred times over.
My heart grieves not only for my lovely dad but also for not seeing the staff who have been like family to me. I have always received empathy, countless cups of teas and many hugs.

Thank you Hawthorns for holding my Dads hand every single day.

I feel that the standards have fallen over the last six months. I have the highest praise for all the staff and find their dedication exceptional. I attend Hawthorns daily & notice staff shortages on a regular basis I have been told the ratio of staff & residents is correct, unfortunately sickness, holidays and training don't understand ratios. Certain times of the day, they are constantly firefighting. Recently the situation has got worse as there is now only 1 toilet downstairs, the other is used for storage. My 2nd complaint is there is a beautiful conservatory waiting for a new roof and it is still the same since January, which means the only place to sit is the lounge. There is no quiet room for residents and relatives to talk and read. Also part of the conservatory could be used for storage.

My husband has been a resident at Hawthorns for 3 1/2 months. It is a small carehome with a friendly atmosphere. The staff are helpful and kind attending to R's considerable needs with patience and respect. Hawthorns is an old house and a little shabby but always clean and homely. Activities provided are numerous but unfortunately R is reluctant to participate, hopefully this may change with encouragement. Meals are adequate though more fruit and vegetables would be appreciated. Overall Hawthorns provides a secure and caring environment with a friendly atmosphere - it is truly a home and not an institution.

I cannot rate the team at Hawthorns highly enough! From the lovely staff on reception through to the support maintenance staff and the carers, chefs and nurses, everyone take the time to genuinely engage with residents, visitors and relatives. I recently visited with my family from Australia and it was very emotional seeing my mum unable to walk and in aged care for the first time. The staff made us so welcome and always go over and above to truly care and love the people in their care. The food is freshly cooked and everyday there are amazing homemade cakes!

The center is excellently managed and you can tell the team works really well together in what is a highly stressful industry. I leave feeling very reassured and grateful that my mother is in such good hands. The combination of caring and expert nursing care is also very good, and they always make my Dad so welcome as he visits daily and stays a long time. There is a great range of of activities on a daily basis too!

My mother was at The Hawthorns for two and a half years and was given an incredible party when she was one hundred years old. The staff were extremely patient and caring. I always enjoyed my visits as there was a friendly, happy atmosphere in the home, with staff working well together. My mother enjoyed the home cooked food.

I required a nursing home for my sister who was dying of pancreatic cancer. My wife found this care home located close to our residence. A neighbouring surgery was another important consideration to enable monitoring of her health. I was stuck by the informality of the home and its homely atmosphere and unlike an institutional set-up that I imagined many homes to provide. The staff were particularly attentive and supportive. Many activities and trips were organised for the residents. My sister made use of the enclosed rear garden and her room was well laid out and bright. The management were very approachable, but my sister was not keen on the food. Generally, a lovely environment for my dying sister.

My brother came to The Hawthorns for end-of-life care on the 7th of August 2023. He was always treated with the utmost dignity and respect. The care and support given to him and our family was outstanding. He was always kept clean and was thoroughly spoilt in his last weeks of life. His room was clean and comfortable. The manager gave us a warm welcome every time we visited and nothing was too much trouble. I can thoroughly recommend The Hawthorns, your loved one will be well cared for there.

I'm the brother of an "end-of-life care" resident at the home. We wish to express our profound thanks to all the staff for the quality of care they displayed, whatever their involvement in the operation of their home. It was notable whenever we were there how everyone helped in the smooth running of the home.

Although the people are caring the building is tired. Maintenance is poor and the management seems unwilling to spend the money on getting professionals in, instead relying on a handyman who does his best but he is not a tradesman.

My previous experience of residential care was some time ago but I was anxious when it was decided my sister needed respite care (at that stage). Any fears myself and her three daughters had, were soon banished with the extreme kindness of the staff, the welcome she was given and the room allocated. At that time, she was physically weak and emotionally empty. She is now joining in social activities. Within three weeks, it was agreed it was unsafe for her to return home and she wants to stay - a decision we all support. A huge thank you to The Hawthorns.

I have found the staff at Hawthornes helpful and very pleasant. Foodwise, only porridge every morning - eggs would be a change. I have also noticed drinks are left on the tray - not helped to drink - hence cold tea. Overall, is good. I cannot give a true review on certain conditions, due to covid.

I was very pleased when my wife was discharged from hospital to The Hawthorns as my own mother was there from 2010 to 2015 and the care she received was excellent. My wife has secondary progressive MS and a multiple of other problems, and having to be hoisted and loss of bowel/bladder etc. She has been there 5 months now and with the help of NHS/continued care. I hope she can remain as she is very happy there. Nothing is too much trouble for the staff and management and they have bent over backwards for her. All in all, an excellent care home in a lovely old house in a beautiful part of Norwich.

Clare RoyalJob Title:Deputy ManagerJoined: 2012

I have been at Hawthorns for over 10 years now. Starting as administrator and for the last 18 months as Residential Deputy Manager.

When I walked into Hawthorns for the first time, it was the first time I had stepped foot in a care home. I can honestly say that working here for over 10 years has been amazing.

I have learnt so much from my colleagues and from the residents that live here. We are a very small home so have a great relationship with each other, we are a family.

Hawthorns definitely has the home-from-home feel. We strive to provide the best care possible while enabling our residents to maintain as much independence as possible.

Judy Read
Judy ReadJob Title:Business Administrator

I was born just outside Norwich and, following an early career in retail management, I married and moved to Ipswich where I joined the Civil Service.

After bringing up my family I was offered a job as a care home administrator and have been working in that role ever since, having worked in two homes in Ipswich, one in Stowmarket and have now returned to Norwich where I am privileged to be part of the wonderful staff team at The Hawthorns.

Following 6th form, I left school but have studied part-time to gain an HNC in Business and a Level 5 in Health and Social Care.

The care home is where the residents live and I believe it is important to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere, greet visitors in a friendly manner, answer phone calls in a timely manner and help both visitors and residents in any way I can.
