My next of kin was sent to Holmwood at end of life. The hospital made the discharge process very difficult but the Holmwood team overcame all the obstacles (putting patient care first). From the first night, every member of staff treated "us" in an exemplary way. Whenever we visited, we found that "our kin" was perfectly cared for and was treated with kindness at all times. The rules were at all times, made flexible to meet all our needs. My "kin" died after one week in Holmwood but was treated perfectly throughout.

Great compassion and sensitivity was shown to the patient and "kin".

We find Holmwood House a very friendly and comfortable environment for our mother. As a nursing home, it doesn't have a cold, clinical feel. Due to Dementia, our mother is unable to participate in activities, but we observe other residents enjoying organised activities. Personally, we always received from the staff with a very warm welcome. Nothing seems too much trouble.

Holmwood House has provided excellent care for my Mother for the past two years. The home is well run and is under new management since June 2018. The new management has plans to modernise and improve the home further and their CQC rating is very good. Staff have shown every form of help, support and consideration for my Mother and have provided her with understanding, dignity and kindness for all of her needs. My own opinion is that it would be extremely difficult to find a better residential home than this.

My husband arrived at Holmwood and was quite depressed at his situation. After having been here for a month, he is much calmer and settled. Staff are extremely caring and fulfil all needs, also ready to answer all my questions, however trivial, which puts our family at ease. Thank you for all the care and love you provide.

The care that the staff have given to our mum is amazing.
We feel that mum is so well looked after with so much kindness and compassion.

It has taken the worry off the family for a while with her being in here.

A beautiful tranquil setting upon arrival and an immediate feeling of comfort upon entering Holmwood House. Having arrived unannounced to view for my mother, I was shown around and provided with plenty of information and lots of kindness that set the precedence for my mothers stay. All the staff were kind, smiley and extremely helpful to both my mother and us as a family. I always felt that she was treated with dignity and we were always kept in the loop regarding her plan of care. A big thanks to the manager who lifted my spirits on more than one occasion and heartfelt thanks to all the staff for making the journey less painful for me and my family.

You have brilliant committed staff but not enough of them. I understand budgets and ratios but feel you are missing a trick. By engaging in the local community, they could volunteer to fill missing gaps, without adding further outlay.
Also, furnishings and floor need updating and you need Wi-Fi.

Please do not change the relaxed atmosphere, a family always feel welcome and it is a homely place to visit. Even if front of building looks a little shabby.

I find all staff caring and very good at their job but on the odd times, I have helped residents as there has not been enough staff in duty - at least one more I find is necessary. Also washing I find good with clothes etc but the ironing very poor and on some days I have taken clothes home as my husband is not wearing creased clothes. Also washing gels put in wrong rooms when name tags are clear to see.

All staff have been wonderful with my husband, me and my family always.

When I first arrived nearly two years ago very apprehensive at having to give up my home and independence. I was greeted with such warmth that my worries vanished into thin air and I am happy to spend the last chapter of my life in this home with its care and warmth of the carers. The carers have the patience of saints. The home is just run as a large, caring family.

My mother was in Holmwood House for 2 and a half years. The staff were excellent with the care given, despite understaffing. The rooms could be better, my mother's carpet was not good and needs changing. The menu could be better, seemed like there was always chicken, which my mother got fed up with. With the amount of money it cost each month things could be better.

My mother died on the 19th of January and I think it is disgusting to be charged a further 14 days. Unbelievable.

Helpful, friendly, courteous staff and management. My mother who is never one to give out plaudits has told me on several occasions how much she likes it there - an accolade indeed! I would recommend the care home -and it is a home- to anyone. Lots of activities going on for those who want them, 6 and a half days a week. The food is tasty and wholesome with a choice given and even sherry at Sunday lunch! Well done Holmwood House Care Centre.

My mother was allocated a place at Holmwood House Care Centre at the same time she became unwell and was admitted to hospital. Holmwood House Care Centre held the room for us and supported our family and helped to get mum moved into here for end of life support. Unfortunately, my mum only survived for one day and did not get to experience all the facilities at Holmwood House Care Centre. The staff were extremely caring and supportive during her last few hours. I cannot thank them enough.

I have been very pleased with the care and treatment my mother experienced whilst in Holmwood House.
All nursing staff were considerate and caring showing understanding of my mother's condition (vascular dementia) and acting in a supportive manner to her and myself.
The atmosphere of the home is welcoming and inclusive and a good variety of activities are available to residents.
I was greatly impressed with the humanity shown especially when my mother was near to death.
The care showed concern for her state at the same time as reassuring and supporting her daughters.

She was in good hands.

My Mum has recently gone into Holmwood House after a short spell in hospital and due to her not being able to manage to care for herself at home.
She is now cared for and well looked after and treated as though she is family and to know she is safe has eased the stress and worry for me.

The home is managed very well and all the staff are friendly and accommodating, nothing is too much trouble. I hope Mum will continue to enjoy her time there.

Dad never wanted to go into a home, but after 1 week he settled in and is very happy. He enjoys the food and the banter with the carers.
The carers are always polite and always seem happy. We have not had any real problems since dad has been there, all the family feel that they can discuss any problems with management quite happily.

I am an ex carer and I feel dad is very well looked after and he is happy which is most important to us.

We selected Holmwood House for my mothers care due to the very good impression given at our initial meeting - they talked about my mother and her care needs before talking about fees. My mother arrived in February 2016 with a very poor prognosis but 16 months later she is happy and comfortable thanks to the care she has been given. I'm always kept informed of any change in her treatment or her condition. The staff are always very friendly and genuinely caring and the whole place seems to have an excellent community atmosphere.

In May the care home held a dementia awareness session which my husband and I attended and found very useful. The speakers were in-house staff and one of them was actually one of my father's carers. It was reassuring to hear her speak of her knowledge and understanding of this terrible disease. After the session the home put on a 1950s tea party. An entertainer was invited along. There was dancing and plenty of tea and cake. A really good event and my thanks go to the staff for arranging this.

Charlene Waldron
Charlene WaldronJob Title:Home ManagerJoined: 2020

I qualified as a Registered General Nurse in 2003 and became the Home Manager at Holmwood House.

Before my training, I worked in nursing and residential homes as a care worker, and as a student nurse did placements in the community care homes. I always loved the ‘homely’ feel of working in care homes rather than the clinical environments of hospitals, and that’s why I pursued a career in nursing in social care.

Since qualifying, I have been lucky enough to work in lots of outstanding care homes that specialise in palliative care, young adults with head injuries, MS and care of the elderly.

Being a nurse has enabled me to travel and visit different places in the UK, have a varied role, and continuously learn new skills. It has enabled me to learn how to communicate with people and care for them. I have been involved in numerous projects and pilots throughout my career, and am lucky enough to win ‘best nursing care’ in the UK care home awards.

I am a big advocate for Nursing in Social Care and have recently been involved in the teaching and learning in care homes project at Holmwood House, and currently a member of the Social Care Nursing Advisory Council for the East of England region and involved in the ‘This Nurse Can campaign at UEA.

She began working in forensic units, thriving in high-pressure settings and supporting individuals with challenging behaviours. Later, she transitioned into social care, where she discovered a passion for dementia support.

Molly has held senior roles, including Clinical Lead Nurse and Deputy Manager in a care home for residents with complex neurological needs. Her depth of experience and person-centred approach led her to join the nursing and management team at Holmwood House.

Outside of work, Molly enjoys time with her family and puppy, tending her allotment, and attending music festivals.

Proud to be a nurse, she feels privileged to support individuals living with dementia, delivering care that is compassionate, meaningful, and truly person-centred.
