Holmwood House is located within walking distance of Swaffham town centre, set within acres of beautiful grounds, an extended Grade II listed building dating from 1846.

Many of the original features have been retained and it has been sympathetically and tastefully converted. The main house has eight bedrooms, all enjoying fantastic views over the grounds.

Accessible from the main house is a purpose-built ground floor extension consisting of 32 bedrooms. All have en-suite facilities and there are two comfortable lounges, both of which have direct access to an enclosed garden. There is also a dining room and specialist facilities for bathing and showering.

Added in 2008, the Woodland Suite provides 19 en-suite bedrooms catering specifically for those with dementia and provides a safe and secure environment. There is a large lounge with unlimited access to a secure sensory garden, with residents taking an active role in its development.

My wife has been a resident in Holmwood House for 9 months. She has received excellent care from a dedicated team of carers. The home also organises various activities in order to stimulate the residents. These include visits with owls, donkeys and musical events. The food is of good quality and looks
very appetising. The main thing is that she is happy and settled.

Overall I am very satisfied with the care my husband is receiving from the care assistants and the nursing staff at Holmwood House. He is happy in his self and doesn't seem to be agitated or distressed. One thing that does cause him to become agitated is having to wait to be taken to the toilet, as
he is not mobile thisis sometimes a problem, this is the only complaint I have.

Staff are friendly and caring. My dad gets the best care and is happy where he lives, which is so important to us. When my nan recently passed away at Holmwood House she was made so comfortable and had exceptional care. All the staff were so lovely to her and us as a family.

My mum has been a resident at the home since July 2024. She had a very warm welcome, and it has been the same since. All the staff show a lot of kindness towards the residents, and always friendly towards me when I am visiting, I feel happy that my mum is in good hands. I try and join in the activities
when I can, and they are always a lot of fun. The staff are always keeping me up to date with my mum's health and let me know if they have any concerns. I feel confident that my mum is in the best hands when I am unbale to see her as I work away during the week. My mum has become better in herself since being in the home as she is surrounded by people all day and is involved with activities that keeps her mind active. I truly can recommend this home.

Overall generally satisified with the care provided for my godmother. Unfortunateley the lady concerned (who is 99 years old} chooses not to interact socially with other residents. Neither will she accept either a TV or radio in her room.

Having started with respite care my wife is now in full residential care as her dementia progresses. I had no hesitation in choosing Holmwood House as her new home. It is good to know she is content and well cared for. I regularly visit and always have a warm welcome to what feels like a large family.
The staff keep me well informed of my wife's condition and her needs either in person or by phone. There are regular activities to keep residents entertained and active.

From living a distance away I am always grateful
To be able to speak with a person who knows my mother and can give up to date information on her. The staff when I do manage to visit are helpful and friendly. Any requests I do have at the time of visit are implemented and I am very happy with the

My Dad spent the last one and half years of his life in Holmwood House Nursing home in Swaffham up to when he passed away in August this year at 95 years old. He was well looked after with care and kindness the whole time. We were able to visit whenever we liked and were always met with smiles. His
dementia meant that he would have struggled to continue his life at home but I know that at Holmwood House he was welcomed and included in their community with quizzes, singing and puzzles each week and was safe and happy - and loved the food!

Such a lovely residence, with a super homely feel. The home smells fresh and clean and the freshly cooked meals look delicious. All the staff we have met whilst visiting our friend have been first class, helpful, friendly and so welcoming to all. Lovely admin ladies who are so kind and the nurses are
delightful too.
This is a calm, relaxing, beautiful place, well done to all who work so hard to make it such a lovely home.

I have found the care home to be excellent in the care for its residents and their well being. Current Review Score: 9.7 (9.678)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.678) out of 10 for Holmwood House Care Centre is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 44 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 44 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.678 for Holmwood House Care Centre is calculated as follows: ( (359 Excellents x 5) + (139 Goods x 4) + (11 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 510 Ratings = 4.678
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Holmwood House Care Centre is based on 44 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 62 registered maximum number of service users is 12.4, which has been reached with 44 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

I qualified as a Registered General Nurse in 2003, and the Home Manager at Holmwood House.
Prior to my training I worked in nursing and residential homes as a care worker, and as a student nurse did placements in the community care homes. I always loved the ‘homely’ feel of working in care homes rather than the clinical environments of hospitals, and that’s why I pursued a career in nursing in social care.
Since qualifying I have been lucky enough to work in lots of outstanding care homes who specialise in palliative care, young adults with head injuries, MS and care of the elderly.
Being a nurse has enabled me to travel and visit different places in the UK, have a varied role, and continuously learn new skills. It has enabled me to learn how to communicate with people and care for them. I have been involved in numerous projects and pilots throughout my career and lucky enough to win ‘best nursing care’ in the UK care home awards.
I am a big advocate for Nursing in Social Care and have recently been involved in the teaching and learning in care homes project at Holmwood House and currently a member of the Social Care Nursing Advisory Council for East of England region and involved in the ‘This Nurse Can campaign at UEA.
