My Dad spent the last one and half years of his life in Holmwood House Nursing home in Swaffham up to when he passed away in August this year at 95 years old. He was well looked after with care and kindness the whole time. We were able to visit whenever we liked and were always met with smiles. His dementia meant that he would have struggled to continue his life at home but I know that at Holmwood House he was welcomed and included in their community with quizzes, singing and puzzles each week and was safe and happy - and loved the food!

Such a lovely residence, with a super homely feel. The home smells fresh and clean and the freshly cooked meals look delicious. All the staff we have met whilst visiting our friend have been first class, helpful, friendly and so welcoming to all. Lovely admin ladies who are so kind and the nurses are delightful too.

This is a calm, relaxing, beautiful place, well done to all who work so hard to make it such a lovely home.

I have found the care home to be excellent in the care for its residents and their well being. The food is very wholesome with variety and choice, and there is attention paid to entertainment, which is very important so that people are not bored. The staff are friendly, experienced and there is a good overall atmosphere.

What a welcoming place! My husband has only been here 13 days. I am very happy that he is here. The staff already seem to know him and are settling him in very well.

Someone is always available to answer questions and explain routines. Communication is very good. I have been kept informed about what they are planning for my husband.

My mother has complex care needs, including (in my view) probable dementia psychosis. Because of her dementia, her first 2 years at the home were very challenging for a number of reasons. I am glad to say that she is now settled and stablised, due to excellent care received here. Mum now considers Holmwood, her home. It would have been easy for the team to have given up on her, in those early days, but they didn't. They worked closely with me throughout to try and find solutions, whilst always preserving mum's dignity. Last year, they enabled mum to attend my wedding day, which would not have been possible without their support. I am very grateful to them for this. For me, the home has a "warm homely feel" whilst still maintaining professional clinical standards. There are many activities, the team are friendly, and for me it feels a "home from Holm(wood)". I am able to meet my external commitments, knowing that mum is being well looked after. This is such an overwhelming relief.

My mother who is now 102 has been at Holmwood House for three years now. It is difficult for me living in the USA and being so far away, but I have come to trust the staff who take good care of her and keep her safe. I know she can sometimes be a little difficult, but they treat her with respect regardless.
I am also impressed with the level of detail in the record keeping for each resident, and the fact that they have daily meetings to discuss changes in needs for every resident.

I feel I can recommend Holmwood House to anyone at that point in their lives where a loved one needs more care than the family can provide.

Mum has been able to take herself to the bathroom since moving to the home but following a couple of 'off' days, her legs gave way and she fell to the floor. On alerting staff using the buzzer, they acted quickly and carefully. Mum expressed pain in her back and hips so it was wisely felt to not attempt to move her. The paramedics had already been contacted and (despite my being able to attend), there was a member of the care team with Mum at all times. Fortunately, Mum's only injury has been a fractured wrist, but the team are very attentive and caring and communicate with me regularly and clearly if there is any change in Mum's care plan or medication. Mum is so pleased to be there and feels she is well cared for which gives me tremendous peace of mind.

Both of my parents are residents in Holmwood House and I cannot speak highly enough of the carers and management team there. My mum has complex medical needs as well as dementia but has thrived thanks to the care she receives which is tailored specifically for her needs. There are lots of activities laid on, and visits from singers, speakers and various animals and birds that the residents can interact with if they want to are well received. Family members are always welcome to visit and join in, and are kept up to date with health issues and care needs as they evolve. The care team are friendly, kind and respectful to both residents and family members alike.

It is a huge weight off my mind knowing my parents are safe and receiving excellent care.

Mum was having difficulty getting to her bathroom on time, so consequently, had had quite a few 'accidents'.
The home contacted me to say they had a different room for mum, with more space, better access to her bathroom and laminate flooring. They wanted to know if I agreed with the move and if I could come and talk to mum about it with them.
The move was made with minimal disruption to mum, she is now nearer to the lounge and next door to one of her friends.
The floor is washed every day.
She was delighted with the change!
Everything was handled with delicacy and with my mum's best interests at heart.
ALL of the staff are very caring and understanding, both of my mum's situation and my own.

They are very supportive.

Mum is very settled here. Her room is spacious, great view of the garden from her window and the room is kept spotlessly clean. The staff on the EMI are lovely - very calm, patient and caring. I am pleased that Mum is spending her later years here.

Charlene Waldron
Charlene WaldronJob Title:Home ManagerJoined: 2020

I qualified as a Registered General Nurse in 2003 and became the Home Manager at Holmwood House.

Before my training, I worked in nursing and residential homes as a care worker, and as a student nurse did placements in the community care homes. I always loved the ‘homely’ feel of working in care homes rather than the clinical environments of hospitals, and that’s why I pursued a career in nursing in social care.

Since qualifying, I have been lucky enough to work in lots of outstanding care homes that specialise in palliative care, young adults with head injuries, MS and care of the elderly.

Being a nurse has enabled me to travel and visit different places in the UK, have a varied role, and continuously learn new skills. It has enabled me to learn how to communicate with people and care for them. I have been involved in numerous projects and pilots throughout my career, and am lucky enough to win ‘best nursing care’ in the UK care home awards.

I am a big advocate for Nursing in Social Care and have recently been involved in the teaching and learning in care homes project at Holmwood House, and currently a member of the Social Care Nursing Advisory Council for the East of England region and involved in the ‘This Nurse Can campaign at UEA.

Molly qualified as a nurse 21 years ago, fulfilling a lifelong ambition. Though initially planning to become a general nurse, she chose to specialise in mental health nursing – a decision that has shaped her career ever since.

She began working in forensic units, thriving in high-pressure settings and supporting individuals with challenging behaviours. Later, she transitioned into social care, where she discovered a passion for dementia support.

Molly has held senior roles, including Clinical Lead Nurse and Deputy Manager in a care home for residents with complex neurological needs. Her depth of experience and person-centred approach led her to join the nursing and management team at Holmwood House.

Outside of work, Molly enjoys time with her family and puppy, tending her allotment, and attending music festivals.

Proud to be a nurse, she feels privileged to support individuals living with dementia, delivering care that is compassionate, meaningful, and truly person-centred.
