Holmwood House is located within walking distance of Swaffham town centre, set within acres of beautiful grounds, an extended Grade II listed building dating from 1846.

Many of the original features have been retained and it has been sympathetically and tastefully converted. The main house has eight bedrooms, all enjoying fantastic views over the grounds.

Accessible from the main house is a purpose-built ground floor extension consisting of 32 bedrooms. All have en-suite facilities and there are two comfortable lounges, both of which have direct access to an enclosed garden. There is also a dining room and specialist facilities for bathing and showering.

Added in 2008, the Woodland Suite provides 19 en-suite bedrooms catering specifically for those with dementia and provides a safe and secure environment. There is a large lounge with unlimited access to a secure sensory garden, with residents taking an active role in its development.

A few of the night care staff are brusque and seemingly uncaring. I have been upset by them a number of times. Most are excellent.

What a welcoming place! My husband has only been here 13 days. I am very happy that he is here. The staff already seem to know him and are settling him in very well.
Someone is always available to answer questions and explain routines. Communication is very good. I have been kept informed about what
they are planning for my husband.

My mother has complex care needs, including (in my view) probable dementia psychosis. Because of her dementia, her first 2 years at the home were very challenging for a number of reasons. I am glad to say that she is now settled and stablised, due to excellent care received here. Mum now considers Holmwood,
her home. It would have been easy for the team to have given up on her, in those early days, but they didn't. They worked closely with me throughout to try and find solutions, whilst always preserving mum's dignity. Last year, they enabled mum to attend my wedding day, which would not have been possible without their support. I am very grateful to them for this. For me, the home has a "warm homely feel" whilst still maintaining professional clinical standards. There are many activities, the team are friendly, and for me it feels a "home from Holm(wood)". I am able to meet my external commitments, knowing that mum is being well looked after. This is such an overwhelming relief.

My mother who is now 102 has been at Holmwood House for three years now. It is difficult for me living in the USA and being so far away, but I have come to trust the staff who take good care of her and keep her safe. I know she can sometimes be a little difficult, but they treat her with respect regardless.
I
am also impressed with the level of detail in the record keeping for each resident, and the fact that they have daily meetings to discuss changes in needs for every resident.
I feel I can recommend Holmwood House to anyone at that point in their lives where a loved one needs more care than the family can provide.

Mum has been able to take herself to the bathroom since moving to the home but following a couple of 'off' days, her legs gave way and she fell to the floor. On alerting staff using the buzzer, they acted quickly and carefully. Mum expressed pain in her back and hips so it was wisely felt to not attempt
to move her. The paramedics had already been contacted and (despite my being able to attend), there was a member of the care team with Mum at all times. Fortunately, Mum's only injury has been a fractured wrist, but the team are very attentive and caring and communicate with me regularly and clearly if there is any change in Mum's care plan or medication. Mum is so pleased to be there and feels she is well cared for which gives me tremendous peace of mind.

Both of my parents are residents in Holmwood House and I cannot speak highly enough of the carers and management team there. My mum has complex medical needs as well as dementia but has thrived thanks to the care she receives which is tailored specifically for her needs. There are lots of activities
laid on, and visits from singers, speakers and various animals and birds that the residents can interact with if they want to are well received. Family members are always welcome to visit and join in, and are kept up to date with health issues and care needs as they evolve. The care team are friendly, kind and respectful to both residents and family members alike.
It is a huge weight off my mind knowing my parents are safe and receiving excellent care.

Mum was having difficulty getting to her bathroom on time, so consequently, had had quite a few 'accidents'.
The home contacted me to say they had a different room for mum, with more space, better access to her bathroom and laminate flooring. They wanted to know if I agreed with the move and if I could
come and talk to mum about it with them.
The move was made with minimal disruption to mum, she is now nearer to the lounge and next door to one of her friends.
The floor is washed every day.
She was delighted with the change!
Everything was handled with delicacy and with my mum's best interests at heart.
ALL of the staff are very caring and understanding, both of my mum's situation and my own.
They are very supportive.

Mum is very settled here. Her room is spacious, great view of the garden from her window and the room is kept spotlessly clean. The staff on the EMI are lovely - very calm, patient and caring. I am pleased that Mum is spending her later years here.

My wife moved into Holmwood in December 2024, with advanced dementia. She settled immediately and is very well cared for and supported by the caring team, who know the needs of all the residents on the EMI wing.
Extra stimulation is provided by moving her each day into the lounge. All the staff -
carers, cleaning, laundry, kitchen are all supportive, friendly and work as a team. The management and nurses all know each resident and their needs and are very approachable for resident updates etc.
Very pleased - thank you. I know my wife is being well cared for and looked after.

Holmwood House Care Centre is a fantastic care home. It is well run, clean, the food is good and the staff are knowledgeable, patient and friendly. The nurses are quick to address and resolve any health issues. There is a well organised schedule of activities which the residents can choose to join in
with or just observe. The petting animal visits are fantastic. I'm so pleased my mum got allocated a room here.

Current Review Score: 9.7 (9.679)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.679) out of 10 for Holmwood House Care Centre is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 43 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 43 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.679 for Holmwood House Care Centre is calculated as follows: ( (348 Excellents x 5) + (141 Goods x 4) + (8 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 498 Ratings = 4.679
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Holmwood House Care Centre is based on 43 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 62 registered maximum number of service users is 12.4, which has been reached with 43 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

I qualified as a Registered General Nurse in 2003, and the Home Manager at Holmwood House.
Prior to my training I worked in nursing and residential homes as a care worker, and as a student nurse did placements in the community care homes. I always loved the ‘homely’ feel of working in care homes rather than the clinical environments of hospitals, and that’s why I pursued a career in nursing in social care.
Since qualifying I have been lucky enough to work in lots of outstanding care homes who specialise in palliative care, young adults with head injuries, MS and care of the elderly.
Being a nurse has enabled me to travel and visit different places in the UK, have a varied role, and continuously learn new skills. It has enabled me to learn how to communicate with people and care for them. I have been involved in numerous projects and pilots throughout my career and lucky enough to win ‘best nursing care’ in the UK care home awards.
I am a big advocate for Nursing in Social Care and have recently been involved in the teaching and learning in care homes project at Holmwood House and currently a member of the Social Care Nursing Advisory Council for East of England region and involved in the ‘This Nurse Can campaign at UEA.
