Holmwood House is located within walking distance of Swaffham town centre, set within acres of beautiful grounds, an extended Grade II listed building dating from 1846.

Many of the original features have been retained and it has been sympathetically and tastefully converted. The main house has eight bedrooms, all enjoying fantastic views over the grounds.

Accessible from the main house is a purpose-built ground floor extension consisting of 32 bedrooms. All have en-suite facilities and there are two comfortable lounges, both of which have direct access to an enclosed garden. There is also a dining room and specialist facilities for bathing and showering.

Added in 2008, the Woodland Suite provides 19 en-suite bedrooms catering specifically for those with dementia and provides a safe and secure environment. There is a large lounge with unlimited access to a secure sensory garden, with residents taking an active role in its development.

I am very grateful that my father was placed at Holmwood House after release from hospital as the staff have been so kind and supportive to us both. They always have time to take to me and explain anything and he is very happy there. He tells me frequently that the staff are smashing. Due to Covid,
I have been unable to see much of the inside of Holmwood House so cannot comment on some of the points.

I have found Holmwood House to be a very good care home. My father has terminal cancer and I feel considering it is not a hospice they have met his needs to a top standard. I have had regular feedback from the nurses and carers about his condition and feel he is being treated with care and dignity.
So, all in all, I would recommend to a friend.

The past 18 months have not been easy for anyone especially for the residents in care.
Over these months Holmwood House has done everything possible to keep residents safe and still allowing me to visit my mum whenever possible. I am very happy with the care my mother has received during this difficult
time and over the years that she has been at Holmwood.

Mum has been at Holmwood for many years now. The care she receives is very good, we have no concerns about her at all. She is settled and happy. The staff are always pleasant and friendly. It has been a strange year for everyone, but they seemed to have done a good job in a difficult situation.

My parent now considers Holmwood to be their home. The carers and nurses have been kind, patient and caring. The food has been greatly appreciated by my parent. The staff have also been very accommodating to me when I have wanted to call at any time. I have no concerns over safety or Covid. Holmwood
has more of a feel of a home rather than an institution with lovely grounds.

Although only a resident at Holmwood house for a very short spell of time to receive palliative end of life care, our family were so impressed by the standard of care, compassion and dignity shown to our loved one. Nothing was too much trouble for any member staff in regards to the care they gave.
The
whole family were supported throughout the time we were there. These truly wonderful people went above and beyond giving us privacy to spend much wanted time with our Nan and Mum, even after she had sadly passed. We really can't thank you enough for all that you did. Myself and other members of the family have worked in the care industry for a number of years and were all so so impressed. Please, please keep doing what you do, you made a sad and heartbreaking time easier. As a family, we only wish our Nan and Mum could have been with you longer.
Well done to all, from the managers, nurses, care support workers and the domestic team; we thank each and every one of you.

My next of kin was sent to Holmwood at end of life. The hospital made the discharge process very difficult but the Holmwood team overcame all the obstacles (putting patient care first). From the first night, every member of staff treated "us" in an exemplary way. Whenever we visited, we found that "our
kin" was perfectly cared for and was treated with kindness at all times. The rules were at all times, made flexible to meet all our needs. My "kin" died after one week in Holmwood but was treated perfectly throughout.
Great compassion and sensitivity was shown to the patient and "kin".

We find Holmwood House a very friendly and comfortable environment for our mother. As a nursing home, it doesn't have a cold, clinical feel. Due to Dementia, our mother is unable to participate in activities, but we observe other residents enjoying organised activities. Personally, we always received
from the staff with a very warm welcome. Nothing seems too much trouble.

Holmwood House has provided excellent care for my Mother for the past two years. The home is well run and is under new management since June 2018. The new management has plans to modernise and improve the home further and their CQC rating is very good. Staff have shown every form of help, support and
consideration for my Mother and have provided her with understanding, dignity and kindness for all of her needs. My own opinion is that it would be extremely difficult to find a better residential home than this.

Current Review Score: 9.7 (9.676)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.676) out of 10 for Holmwood House Care Centre is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 41 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 41 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.676 for Holmwood House Care Centre is calculated as follows: ( (332 Excellents x 5) + (135 Goods x 4) + (8 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 476 Ratings = 4.676
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Holmwood House Care Centre is based on 41 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 62 registered maximum number of service users is 12.4, which has been reached with 41 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Charlene Waldron

Job Title: Home Manager Joined: 2020

I qualified as a Registered General Nurse in 2003 and became the Home Manager at Holmwood House.

Before my training, I worked in nursing and residential homes as a care worker, and as a student nurse did placements in the community care homes. I always loved the ‘homely’ feel of working in care homes rather than the clinical environments of hospitals, and that’s why I pursued a career in nursing in social care.

Since qualifying, I have been lucky enough to work in lots of outstanding care homes that specialise in palliative care, young adults with head injuries, MS and care of the elderly.

Being a nurse has enabled me to travel and visit different places in the UK, have a varied role, and continuously learn new skills. It has enabled me to learn how to communicate with people and care for them. I have been involved in numerous projects and pilots throughout my career, and am lucky enough to win ‘best nursing care’ in the UK care home awards.

I am a big advocate for Nursing in Social Care and have recently been involved in the teaching and learning in care homes project at Holmwood House, and currently a member of the Social Care Nursing Advisory Council for the East of England region and involved in the ‘This Nurse Can campaign at UEA.
