Shockerwick House is an historic building that has been lovingly converted into a care facility, offering nursing and residential care, convalescence, palliative, short stays for a minimum of one week and day care.

Shockerwick House is located on the outskirts of Bath’s World Heritage Site. The magnificent 17th century house is set in twelve acres of wheelchair friendly gardens, with an orangery and vegetable plot. The beautifully appointed rooms offer plenty of areas for residents to relax or socialise in. The home has a secure entry and exit system and a 24-hour call system so that residents feel safe and secure. All bedrooms have their own TV and telephone.

Special diets are catered for and the home has magnificent, oak-panelled dining rooms. Hot and cold options are included and snacks and drinks are available throughout the day and night.

Relaxation sessions, manicures and foot spas are just a few of the many additional benefits of life at Shockerwick House, with arts and crafts and musical afternoons being some of the activities that residents have embraced.

My grandmother was in a care home a while ago, which wasn't great so I was a bit concerned when Mum had no option but to be looked after 24 hours. She was offered a place at Shockerwick house after a short hospital visit and has been there since June.

I am very impressed with the home, so different

han what I had seen before. The standards are really high and the staff work so hard in ensuring Mum is cared for. She always looks well and although she doesn't say much, I think she has settled in well. She eats most of her food which is always appetising even though she has it mashed up.

The rooms are lovely and Mum's room is just right for her. I am pleased that she goes downstairs when there is any activity and is always dressed and sat up.

I would recommend this home for anyone, it's more like a family atmosphere when you visit.

Reply from Alison Horridge, Customer Advisor on behalf of the team at Shockerwick House Care HomeThank you for your lovely review. My father has been a resident at Showerwick House since August 2024. Throughout his time his time there he has received first class care.
Without exception, everyone who works there have been so kind, thoughtful, compassionate and conscientious. His medical and personal care is wonderful. We have
absolutely no worries about him.
Reply from Alison Horridge, Customer Advisor on behalf of the team at Shockerwick House Care HomeThank you for your kind words. It is always nice to hear that families feel our staff treat their loved ones with kindness and compassion. We hope to continue providing your Father with the best possible care.

I only have a couple of weeks before my operation to organise going into a care home to recover from surgery as I live on my own. I found the booking procedure complicated as I had to go through customer care in Leeds several times, before finally being able to speak to the home directly. However, I
am very pleased to be here. The staff are welcoming, attentive and cheerful. The food has been very good and it is a relief not to have to worry about taking care of myself. The house has lovely grounds with splendid views. It would be helpful to add the WIFI code to the welcome folder- I got it from a carer but have discovered after a week it was marked in a drawer. Overall, I will recommend the care home to friends.
Reply from Natasha Burns-Leigh, Customer Service Advisor at Shockerwick House Care HomeWe appreciate you sharing your experience with our home. It is lovely to hear how well you have settled in and that we could help to put your mind at ease during your respite period. Thank you for your recommendation.

My mother loves it here, after a two week respite she signed up permanently for a residential room with some care provided. Since she has been there, her health, mobility & mood has all vastly improved and I have not seen her happier in many years.

Shockerwick feels like a real refuge from the challenges of being an older person in 2025. The staff are exceptionally caring and professional. They are helpful, friendly, respectful and genuinely caring. This makes such a difference.
The setting and the environment are homely and comfortable - although
this means some of their rooms are compromised, and the facilities are limited. I am not sure that the food always meets the same high standard. It often appears over-cooked and with insufficient like of fresh fruit and vegetables (why don't they harvest the rhubarb grown in vast quantities in the garden?) It looks high calorie, high carbohydrate, low flavour, low texture and low appeal. The place is fantastic, and expensive.
Reply from Alison Horridge, Customer Advisor on behalf of the team at Shockerwick House Care HomeThank you for your review. We are happy to hear that you find our staff to be exceptionally caring and professional. We will certainly pass your comments regarding the food on to the chef manager however.

The care in general for my mother has been very good. However over the last 3 days of her life the palliative care she received was outstanding and the care we received as her family was wonderful and very supportive.

I am writing on behalf of my father who is 94. Dad found his 2 week stay (to recover from a couple of falls) at Shockerwick House a very pleasant experience. All the staff were kind, caring and engaging. the nursing care was excellent. He really enjoyed the food, there was a good variety of options
to choose from. He was lucky with the weather so has been able to go into the garden and enjoy the views. If he required any care in the future we would happily book him in with you.

I was for the second time, in respite care after an operation to fuse my ankle and foot, so in plaster too to knee. I was extremely well looked after by the care staff and the nurses. I would happily recommend Shockerwick to any of my friends looking for similar care requirements.

My personal experience from arrival to departure has been exemplary. Room attractive and warm, bed comfortable, staff solicitous and care efficient. The building is beautiful, views outstanding and fresh air walks in the grounds a treat. Particularly impressive is the positive atmosphere that pervades
Shockerwick House. Carers, Nurses, Cleaners, Volunteers and even the temporary Agency Chef are caring kind, professionally confident, caring, but also appear supremely content in their work. The meals I chose from the menus were almost without exception well cooked and delicious!
Having spent just two nights in hospital after my operation I was relieved to feel in safe hands with a carer or nurse checking in on me. If I needed attention my bell was almost always attended in a relatively short time. One of my ongoing necessities was to receive an ice pack every couple of hours to keep my leg from swelling. Also, not being a tea or coffee drinker, I was provided with a jug of hot water to make my own herbal teas and always provided with a cheerful smile. NB On respite after a hip replacement I was not able take advantage of activities so cannot comment on those.

Shockerwick House Care Home has been magnificent in looking after my 100 year old godmother including giving her a fabulous party for her birthday. The staff are all very caring and I have enjoyed good meals with her every week, also been involved in the excellent chair yoga sessions. Her room and all
the surroundings are magnificent. The gardens are splendid and thoroughly enjoyed in the good weather.
We're not happy about security as one of the residents walked all the way to the main road unsupervised. Otherwise wonderful.

All the staff at Shockerwick House Care Home without exception treated my mother and our family with the utmost kindness, warmth and dignity at the most awful of times. They went out of their way at every encounter to give my mum the peace and comfort she needed in her final days. After weeks of being
treated quite inhumanely whilst in hospital, at Shockerwick my mum was treated with respect and kindness. It was the only beacon of light in a very dark summer for us all and I can't commend the staff highly enough.

My two-week stay at Shockerwick House contributed greatly to my recuperation after a fall which fractured my pelvis. The staff were professional, kind, and helpful. I can very much recommend Shockerwick House! I am a full time carer for my wife. When I had a 2 week respite care break recently my wife stayed at Shockerwick House. This is the third time she has stayed here. The staff are really friendly and warm. I completely felt she was in caring hands and was
able have a break and not worry about her. She had a super room with wonderful views across the valley. She enjoyed the food and felt safe herself and that the staff were available at any time to help if needed. Her room and ensuite bathroom were spotlessly clean and warm. The staff were really helpful to me, sorting out her medication and understanding her needs.

Shockerwick House is a beautiful Georgian Mansion House with an interesting history. It has lovely gardens, outstanding views and the feel of a luxury boutique hotel that is a family home.
My parents are in their late nineties, and after a very independent lifestyle, they moved into a fabulous double
room at the beginning of this year. They were apprehensive at first but were soon won over by the unfailing kindness and cheerfulness of all the staff. Everyone goes above and beyond and is professional and communicative at all times.
I feel reassured my parents are as happy as they can be, whilst receiving the very best care available in a happy and caring environment where they are always treated with patience and respect.

I would highly recommend Shockerwick, firstly because it is the only care home in the area that was willing to accommodate dual They have a beautiful, light airy room with views across the countryside, fitting in with the rest of the historic house which feels more like a country hotel than a care home.
The
staff are all unfailingly friendly and helpful and with a high standard of care, understanding and patience with all the idiosyncrasies that can occur with elderly people. Both my parents have really blossomed since they have been there and we are looking forward to warmer days when we can visit with them in the lovely gardens.

My mother has settled well in Shockerwick and seems really happy here. There is good communication with staff. The birthday celebration they organised for my mother was planned with care, which we all enjoyed, and the chef made an excellent tiramisu. It would be easier if I could pay into the float

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.764)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.764) out of 10 for Shockerwick House Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 20 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 20 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.764 for Shockerwick House Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (185 Excellents x 5) + (48 Goods x 4) + (4 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 237 Ratings = 4.764
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Shockerwick House Care Home is based on 20 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 35 registered maximum number of service users is 7, which has been reached with 20 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Hello, my name is Dana and I am the home manager at Shockerwick House.

I’m Romanian and worked for many years in the travel industry before I moved to the UK in 2015 and started my career in care.

I initially worked as a health care assistant before moving on to activities co-ordinator and services co-ordinator roles. I worked closely with the home manager and managed most of her non-clinical duties. One year later I was offered the home manager position at another home within the organisation and moved from Bath to Bristol.

I was delighted to join Shockerwick House in 2025 and I am very much looking forward to continuing its legacy with the help my fantastic team.
