Shockerwick House is an historic building that has been lovingly converted into a care facility, offering nursing and residential care, convalescence, palliative, short stays for a minimum of one week and day care.

Shockerwick House is located on the outskirts of Bath’s World Heritage Site. The magnificent 17th century house is set in twelve acres of wheelchair friendly gardens, with an orangery and vegetable plot. The beautifully appointed rooms offer plenty of areas for residents to relax or socialise in. The home has a secure entry and exit system and a 24-hour call system so that residents feel safe and secure. All bedrooms have their own TV and telephone.

Special diets are catered for and the home has magnificent, oak-panelled dining rooms. Hot and cold options are included and snacks and drinks are available throughout the day and night.

Relaxation sessions, manicures and foot spas are just a few of the many additional benefits of life at Shockerwick House, with arts and crafts and musical afternoons being some of the activities that residents have embraced.

My friend has been in the care home for 15 years and is very happy there. The home keeps me updated with their health and is always happy to help with any issues I might have. The care is good, and the meals are great. The home is always clean and tidy.

It is a beautiful building and I am well fed and looked after. I think it is very poor that nothing happens on Saturday and Sunday. I am glad to have the telephone but friends find it difficult to get through and there is no facility for leaving a message.

Shockerwick House has the advantage of being a beautiful building in outstanding surroundings. Having said that, it doesn't rely on that alone. The care staff are superb, going out of their way to be cheerful, helpful and thoughtful, interacting (so important) whilst still working hard. Meals generally,
were excellent (sadly, due to medication) I was not always receptive to food! I would say that the rule of a minimum two week stay does seem excessive taking into account the cost and nature of respite time required.
Reply from Grace Langfield, Customer Service Adviser at Shockerwick House Care HomeThank you for taking the time to leave your review. We are really pleased to hear you found the care we provide so accommodating and overwhelmingly positive, we hope it made you feel very well cared for and looked after during your respite. We will discuss your feedback with the home’s manager to help them continually improve their service.

The staff at Shockerwick House Care Home have been amazing with our son and adapted to his needs as he is only 31 years of age. No care homes would accept him due to his age but we are so grateful that they accepted him at their lovely home. Even though he is young his personal care is high. They are
constantly looking at things that would help him and make his stay as enjoyable as can be due to his disability. Once again I would like to express my gratitude to all the staff.

My mum was only at the home for a very short time receiving end-of-life care. The decision to move her to Shockerwick was honestly the best we could have made to ensure that her last few days were dignified and that she was taken wonderful care of. The whole team at Shockerwick clearly are filled with
compassion, and this shows up in how they treated not just my mum but our entire family. They were kind, honest and made sure that we knew what was happening at all times and nothing was ever a bother for them. The comfort we all had knowing she was receiving the very best care meant we were able to see her as a family and not as carers which made our final days with her meaningful. It is rare to meet people who are genuine and caring about what they do and how they do it, but the team at Shockerwick went above and beyond on every level. We will forever be grateful for what they did for my mum and for us as a family. I cannot recommend the home and the team there more highly.
Reply from David Mclean, Customer Service Adviser at Shockerwick House Care HomeThank you for taking the time to leave your lovely review. We are saddened to hear about your loss. We were glad to help you and your family through such a difficult time and to hear you felt at ease with your Mum in our care. It is always nice to hear words like “kind” and “honest” being used to describe our care. Hopefully, you will go away from this feeling like your Mum received the best possible care.

All the staff are very professional and caring whether they are carers, housekeeping and catering staff, reception or admin staff. And great nursing care too, with nursing staff who have a lot of experience. The activities for the residents are very good and varied and have lots of attention to detail,
decorating communal areas, individual encouragement to residents to take part in events etc.
During Covid, there were excellent safety precautions in place whilst the home was also aware of the need for residents to have contact with relatives wherever possible and whenever safe to do so.

My father went into Shockerwick for a month's respite, with a view to a permanent stay if he liked it. He and we are very impressed by and pleased with the facilities and the professional, kind and considerate staff. His room is large, light and airy, and he has been able to furnish it with his own
things, even on respite. I have been kept fully in the picture with regard to his welfare and any developments and can visit at any time. My father is relieved to be well looked after and well fed and cared for. Whilst he has found it heart-wrenching to have left his beloved home, he has decided to become a permanent resident, as he feels Shockerwick is the best choice for him.

After two weeks here, I am sitting up in bed with my breakfast, watching "match of the day"! It can't get better than that. Dreading coming into care, but have been very surprised by how much I have enjoyed it. I am allowed to do my own things in my own way, but secure on the knowledge that help is
there should I need it. Feels safe and secure. I cannot speak highly enough of the staff - always smiling, obliging, patient and compassionate. Loved the company of staff and residents. I have recommended Shockerwick House to other people.

Shockerwick House is wonderful, and my brother has a beautiful room, actually a suite. He has attentive care from the nursing staff, who change his dressings every day. As he has very poor mobility, a motion sensor has been provided for his room, connected to the call button. What a good idea! However,
sometimes he says he has to wait quite a long time for assistance after pressing the call button, but this is due to a shortage of staff, I believe. Overall. I am very pleased with his care.

Right from the moment my dad arrived at Shockerwick Care Home, we have been extremely impressed by the high level of care that he has received from all the staff. Dad has settled in so well and feels like he is part of the Shockerwick family. The nursing staff are exceptional, the carers make Dad feel
very special and have really looked after him, the kitchen staff have catered very well for Dad’s dietary needs, and the manager has welcomed the whole of our family (and all Dad’s friends) into Shockerwick whilst making sure that Dad and all the residents are safe and protected from Covid. We could not have asked for a better place for our dear dad to end his days. He calls it his “end of life luxury hotel”. Thank you to everyone involved with Dad’s care.

Mum stayed at Shockerwick House for a few months to convalesce after leaving the hospital. Although Covid restricted my personal ability to visit until towards the end of her stay, Mum always spoke very highly of all the stay, her room and the food. I found the staff very approachable and happy to spend
time talking to me about Mums progress, which was very reassuring. Many thanks to each and every one of the staff!

I've visited a lot of care homes in the area on behalf of my father and my friend, and Shockerwick House is by far the best. My friend who is a resident there is very difficult, but the staff are marvellous, it seems nothing is too much to do for her. Everyone I have interacted with, from the manager,
deputy manager and to the personal carer is so accommodating, so patient and so lovely. They really do care!
The house itself is beautiful, surrounded by gorgeous gardens and grounds, with fabulous views over the valley. Everything is so well maintained and decorated.
I'm impressed by the range of activities that are offered, from not serious, fun activities to more cultural events. Even more impressed that sherry at lunchtime and evening is included.
I note with approval that their covid restrictions and regulations are very well observed, and I've been told about how visiting can take place once the 'no visit' rule is lifted, and feel sure that the residents will be kept safe.

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.764)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.764) out of 10 for Shockerwick House Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 20 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 20 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.764 for Shockerwick House Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (185 Excellents x 5) + (48 Goods x 4) + (4 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 237 Ratings = 4.764
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Shockerwick House Care Home is based on 20 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 35 registered maximum number of service users is 7, which has been reached with 20 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

I have been working in the care sector in different roles since I was 18, only taking a break to have my family.

I joined Shockerwick House in January 2021 as an activities coordinator. While this is my first role totally focused on activities, I have had the same philosophy in all my roles - to make sure I bring happiness, joy and normality to all our residents’ daily lives.

When I’m not working, I love to bake and work on arts and crafts..
