Shockerwick House is an historic building that has been lovingly converted into a care facility, offering nursing and residential care, convalescence, palliative, short stays for a minimum of one week and day care.

Shockerwick House is located on the outskirts of Bath’s World Heritage Site. The magnificent 17th century house is set in twelve acres of wheelchair friendly gardens, with an orangery and vegetable plot. The beautifully appointed rooms offer plenty of areas for residents to relax or socialise in. The home has a secure entry and exit system and a 24-hour call system so that residents feel safe and secure. All bedrooms have their own TV and telephone.

Special diets are catered for and the home has magnificent, oak-panelled dining rooms. Hot and cold options are included and snacks and drinks are available throughout the day and night.

Relaxation sessions, manicures and foot spas are just a few of the many additional benefits of life at Shockerwick House, with arts and crafts and musical afternoons being some of the activities that residents have embraced.

Having worked as a GP for 30 years, the care at Shockerwick given to both my mother and father is the finest I have experienced in the sector. The personal commitment of the staff to the residents is consistently exemplary. The buildings, facilities and furnishings are also top-notch. The gardens are
an oasis for residents and visitors. The skill and compassion in palliative care allowed my parents and ourselves to face their last days in peace and with dignity.

As I live alone, I needed a weeks respite care after a hip replacement operation. I visited Shockerwick and found the experience welcoming, supportive and flexible so booked my post-op week. The setting Shockerwick is glorious - set in beautiful grounds - uplifting in itself. My room was lovely and
the staff were amazing - so kind, encouraging and helpful - nothing was too much trouble. The meals were very good, with plenty of choice. My week at Shockerwick provided me with a bridge between hospital and returning home, helping me to regain my independence in a supportive way. I'm so grateful to all at Shockerwick for making my stay so positive.

I have been living at Shockerwick House for 2 and a half years and before that, I visited my husband who was here for 4 and a half years on a daily basis.
All that time he was very happy here and I have been the same.
I have had a good relationship with all the staff and no complaints.

My Mother came to Shockerwick in October 2018 suffering from a nasty sacral sore, recovering from pneumonia and quite dramatic weight loss.
Thanks to the wonderful care and professionalism of the nursing and care staff under the dignified guidance of the manager, Mummy has thrived here.
After a few
months, she has finally put on weight, is more alert and communicative, and her pressure sore healed (she was turned 2 hourly/24 hours and now 3 hourly with meticulous attention to detail).
The staff are lovely and Mummy is safe, well and content, as are we as a family. Thank you.

My father has been at Shockerwick for almost 4 years.
The care, love and attention he gets is absolutely fantastic - the staff are like our second family - and I always have a lovely feeling when I visit Dad, as the staff and residents all have such a warm and welcoming attitude.
I go to sleep at
night knowing Dad is in the best place ever.

My Father has been at Shockerwick House for 3 3/4 years and during that time he has been beautifully and wonderfully cared for.
All the staff are incredibly caring and kind and it is always an absolute pleasure visiting Dad as the atmosphere at Shockerwick is always very warm and welcoming, and
I always leave feeling very happy and content knowing Dad is being so well looked after. I live 2 hours away and my sister is 3 hours away so knowing Dad is being properly cared for is very important to us.
My Mother was also at Shockerwick for a couple of weeks in July 2017 for her 'end of life care' and my sister and I could not have wished for a more peaceful and wonderful place for her to end her life. All the staff were totally amazing with Mum and also us!
Shockerwick is definitely a 'one in a million' care home and how lucky we are that Dad is there. A beautiful house in beautiful grounds and exceptionally kind and caring staff.

Shockerwick House is like a first class hotel with nursery care. Everyone strives for the residents to achieve the best quality of life they can and they do it so positively that it is a treat to visit. I have peace of mind for the first time for years and for this I am very grateful.

I arrived at Shockerwick House Care Home after an extremely serious cancer and was very weak and poorly. I had to be wheeled everywhere.
The care and attention over the 2 weeks I was there, meant I was able to walk out to the car. They gave me my life back.
Each nurse or helper were so kind to me
as indeed were all the staff. The food was excellent. My room was spacious but welcoming. The care manager was excellent too.

Shockerwick House is an excellent care home.
The staff are extremely helpful and friendly. Nothing is too much trouble. The house has a lovely atmosphere and my only reservation in recommending it more widely is the cost.
Please pass on my thanks and encouragement to all the staff - they are wonderful.

This is a beautiful well kept home, with comfortable attractive rooms and enough space for residents to have privacy if they want it. The gardens are lovely and there is a gardening club for them to enjoy involvement with plants. Outside groups are welcome and residents are encouraged to carry on being
the people they were with the interests they had earlier in life before they came to Shockerwick House Care Home.

Accompanied my friend on a trip today to SS.Great Britain. Very pleasant attention to detail requesting information like the measurements as he is wheelchair bound and getting through doorways can be challenging. The trip was a great success and thoroughly enjoyed it. He was able to access all areas
and felt as if the chair wasn't there. The packed lunch was very appetising.

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.764)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.764) out of 10 for Shockerwick House Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 20 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 20 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.764 for Shockerwick House Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (185 Excellents x 5) + (48 Goods x 4) + (4 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 237 Ratings = 4.764
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Shockerwick House Care Home is based on 20 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 35 registered maximum number of service users is 7, which has been reached with 20 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
