Winscombe Hall is a stunning Victorian Country Mansion House, nestling in the Mendip Hills amid an area of outstanding beauty, close to the Somerset levels and Cheddar. The Grade II listed building was built for the Reverend John Yatman and his family in 1836. The architects William Railton (designer of Nelson’s Column in London & Cardiff Castle) along with William Burgess (designer of fine art) were commissioned. The main house was completed in 1855, and remained as a family home for over 150 years until being converted to a care home in the last 15 years.

Cedars Care Group have tastefully updated this wonderful Victorian Mansion House whilst retaining and incorporating many of the original features, ensuring the buildings character is not spoiled and can be enjoyed by the residents.

Reviews

9.7 Winscombe Hall has a Review Score of 9.7 (9.658)

The Review Score of 9.7 (maximum of 10) for Winscombe Hall is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 23 Reviews over all time. This Average Rating is also the rating value for Winscombe Hall in Google's Search Results - more info

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5 out of 5 from 21 positive Reviews in the last 12 months.

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating of all Reviews over all time. For each review the Care Home / service is rated Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Poor or Very Poor on a number of areas eg Staff, Management etc. The Care Home receives points for each rating as follows: Excellent = 5. Good = 4. Satisfactory = 3. Poor = 2. Very Poor = 1. These points are added up and then divided by the total number of completed ratings to generate the average rating.

    The Average Rating of 4.658 for Winscombe Hall is calculated as follows: ( (188 Excellents x 5) + (70 Goods x 4) + (11 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 269 Ratings = 4.658

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 12 months. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with 'Extremely Likely' or 'Likely' in answer to the question 'How likely are you to recommend this Care Home to friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment?'

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 5 Positive Reviews, 3 points for the first Positive Review and then 0.25 Points for each of the next 4 Positive Reviews.

    2. 1 point is available for reaching a target number of Positive Reviews based on 20% of the number of registered maximum number of service users. If the target is partially reached then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home with 50 registered maximum number of service users has a target of 10 Positive Reviews, if it has 10 or more Positive Reviews it will receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews will receive 0.7 points.

    3. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. The calculation is the same as above, except the points are divided by 2.

The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Winscombe Hall is based on 21 positive Reviews in the last 12 months and is calculated as follows:

    1. 3 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 = 4

    2. Target of 7.8 positive Reviews (39 registered maximum number of service users ÷ 5). 21 Reviews ÷ 7.8 Target Reached = 1

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

I have visited this beautiful grade 2 listed building a number of times in my capacity as assisting a gentleman who is there on respite.

I visited the home previously about a year ago and the improvements are large leaps. Having known the compliance manager from her previous work, I would highly recommend Winscombe.

Well done to the nursing team you have turned this home around.

My Mum passed away and one of the new managers cared for me, taking me to one side and spending time talking to me. The owner also helped me. Thank you to the staff and nurses for helping my Mum. Winscombe Hall is beautiful, thanks to a dedicated and caring staff team.

My mum has always been treated with great kindness by the staff at Winscombe Hall. I would really like to see staff giving my mum more one to one time, that sounds ungratefully possible. I know staff do spend time with mum on a daily basis but I'm talking about an hourly basis. I think it would make such a difference to mum's wellbeing, the feeling that she still has a part to play. I would appreciate any replies you make either to be submitted by overland post or when I pay mum a weekly visit, usually on a Tuesday. Stay well.

My Mum was admitted to Winscombe Hall after a bad experience with another nursing home. She died peacefully. There were some problems but the compliance manager dealt with all our worries and concerns. She spent a lot of time helping us come to terms with what was happening. If she is there then I would recommend the home to people for last days being well looked after. I cannot thank her enough for the kindness she showed us.

Winscombe Hall itself is a beautiful old house, set in wonderful gardens and most importantly of all, has the most fantastic staff who truly provide wonderful care for the elderly. My parents are currently there for the third time, and each time they stay they receive a genuinely friendly welcoming greeting by the staff and immediately feel at home. Their room is a very large, light room full of character and overlooks the lovely grounds through two large bay windows. Whenever we visit, we too are afforded a friendly greeting and the offer of tea or coffee with biscuits. Mum and Dad both comment on the great variety and excellent quality of the food, and there are always activities on offer to those who wish to partake. I cannot fault Winscombe Hall as it has everything you could wish for in terms of gentle, and completely professional care for the elderly. I have absolutely no reservations in Mum and Dad spending their final time together at Winscombe Hall.

I have found staff at Winscombe Hall friendly and welcoming, the home is always warm and homely paying particular attention to the decor. Tables are laid as if you are walking into a restaurant and the menu is inviting. Staff always welcome you with a beverage, I fell they take care of all little creature comforts. The home is clean and spacious, it has a large hallway area and fireplace, the grounds are vast and picturesque and well kept.

Whenever I visit the home is always clean and tidy and the staff are very kind and attentive to myself and my relative.

There has been a change in management in recent months, this has had a positive impact on the home. Although there are lots of new faces, the staff are really caring and friendly and seem happy working there.

The grounds are beautiful. I look forward to visiting in the warmer months.

My Father lived at Winscombe Hall for 2 years prior to passing away in January 2017. Dad was very happy at the home as it was more like living in your "home" as opposed to a purpose built care home. Everyone was friendly and the nurses and carers did their very best to look after my Dad's complex health needs. The meals were good and there were lots of activities on offer. Dad especially loved the garden and having tea on the patio in the afternoon sun. Visitors were always welcome at any time.

My husband had a bad fall and was admitted to hospital early last year. On his discharge from the hospital, I realised that I was unable to cope with his immediate needs. Our sons and 10-year-old granddaughter decided to look for a care home. We viewed, went outside and it was the grandaughter who spoke first, they have a way of simplifying difficult situations ...Grandad would be happy here. He spent 2 weeks on this occasion and she was right he was happy. He has been in for respite on 3 other occasions. He also spends a full day a week here. Enabling me some free time knowing he is safe and spoilt.

The staff are fantastic always smiling and nothing is too much trouble.

I have generally found the home and care for my mum to be of a very good standard, however, as I live in Canada I have had in the past a number of occasions where the communication was poor and in fact a reluctance to provide this on a regular basis. However, after some discussions and raising the issue with the HQ it was resolved.

I do however have to remind the home each week to update me.

The level of care my mum does appear to receive is very good and standards are generally high from the times I am back in the UK and then visit my mum.

This is the third period of emergency/respite care for both my in-laws over the past few months. During these times of continuing difficulty with them, the management of the home have been exceptional in responding to and providing support to us as a family, and in enabling the provision of care to my relatives at short notice when required.
Throughout, the standard of care, consideration and professionalism shown has been consistently of a very high marker, and without exception, all staff exude a genuine warmth and compassion for the work they are doing, and for the residents they are caring for, which is a very special quality. Well done!

Winscombe Hall has and is undergoing quite a transformation since my husband moved there 18 months ago. I have seen many changes of staff but this always seems to be managed in a positive manner and in my experience has not affected the care my husband has received. Since a poor CQC report last year, the management have responded in a big way and now the structure of business and nursing staff appears more balanced and efficient. It has been impressive. A new Activities Manager was appointed last year and she has been excellent bringing much-needed stimulation for the residents.

It is a very old house and yes the building outside and inside will continue to need lots of maintenance and updating but overall it has a very homely feel. There is still more to do but they are making large steps towards their goal.

I have never doubted the care that my husband has received. Nothing can be perfect but I return home at ease after each visit. I visit at least 2-3 times a week.

My Aunt loves Winscombe Hall and I have found all the staff extremely kind and caring. The new 'this is me' documents and summary of care needs in her room have been a joy to read. The compliance manager, I understand has written these, since she has been at Winscombe the change has been tremendous and the care greatly improved. The new staff team are wonderful, and business manager has been very kind. I do hope the home continues with these improvements.

Following an ankle operation and not being able to weight-bear. I was mightily relieved that Winscombe Hall could rescue me on a short-term basis.
My welcome was warm and friendly and once there, my care was ideal. All facilities were kept immaculately clean and although there was a considerate change of staff, all were very considerate and caring.

I had not expected to be out of action so had to take much paperwork etc with me so had little chance for the activities, of which there were plenty. The atmosphere and decoration in the dementia section was all excellent. The terrace and garden would be an absolute joy in better weather.
