As soon as I go through the door I am warmly welcomed. I have found all the staff I have met wonderfully compassionate, caring & very special people. Those residents who can are encouraged to join in whatever of the many activities are arranged. It is a very happy Home with staff going above & beyond to make it so.

The staff at Lucerne House go above and beyond to make the residents feel like they have come to stay in a home filled with joy, fun and love. There's a wide variety of activities and plenty of support to help residents participate, and the staff manage to combine care, respect and laughter. It's not just the residents that benefit from all of this - visitors are also made to feel like part of the Lucerne House family.

I have been searching, unsuccessfully, for suitable respite care for my husband over the last two years in order to have a break as his full time carer. Lucerne NH in Exeter was recommended by their associated care home.
Our whole experience, from my initial introduction, to the Manager arranging a personal visit to our home to meet and get to know my husband and then his stay for a week worked out perfectly. This home even went as far as picking my husband up and bringing him home as he doesn't travel well in our vehicle. Nothing was too much trouble.
I also felt that they had my welfare and best interests at heart too.
He was comfortable and happy to stay there - high praise indeed as he has been very reluctant to be anywhere other than in his own home being looked after by me!

We have already made arrangements for further breaks later in the year.

Thank you so much for your wonderful review and kind words. It was a delight to have him stay with us, and we will do everything we can to ensure a smooth transition to our lovely care home. We're so glad you were able to leave knowing he will be well cared for. He was happy every day, and his huge smile said it all. We look forward to seeing you both again in the future.

Dad was a resident in Lucerne for three years until he sadly passed away in November 2025. The staff provided exceptional, compassionate care, and unwavering professionalism. They were incredible with my Dad, who was living with dementia, treating him with patience, dignity, and genuine understanding. The team created a warm, reassuring environment where we could see that Dad was safe and loved . Staff consistently went above and beyond, responding to his changing needs with empathy and skill. Their expertise in dementia care is clear, and their kindness brought our family real peace of mind. I wholeheartedly recommend this truly professional 'home from home' to anyone seeking the very best care, and as a family , couldn't have wished for anything better for Dad. Thank you .

My mother June stayed at Lucerne for two years until her passing in Nov this year. Throughout her care she was treated with dignity and respect but most of all love. As a family we were welcomed into the Lucerne fold. Cared for as one of their own as they appreciated that the family are often silent sufferers after the emotional turmoil of putting their loved one in care. Lucerne has a Dr from the local surgery on call, a physio, podiatrist and hairdresser all superb. The meals are cooked by the resident chef with menus to suit every palate. There is an entertainment team in place consisting of Alex, Jan and Kirstie who go out of their way to keep the residents active and interested. The care staff in Ide ward were second to none managed by the lovely Ron. Tea was provided with care by the ever friendly Julie and all this is overseen by the brilliant management team of Sally and Grace

I cannot express enough gratitude to the incredible team at Lucerne House for the exceptional care, compassion and patience they have shown while looking after my father who has advanced dementia, can be very unpredictable, confused, agitated and unfortunately even physically aggressive. Despite these challenges the staff have never wavered in their kindness. They treat him with upmost dignity and respect always seeing the person behind the illness rather than judging him by his illness. Every carer, nurse, manager has shown him and us as his family professionalism, genuine love and empathy throughout.

I am truly grateful for the recognition of the exceptional work that our carers do. They are all dedicated and professional, and I am proud to call them part of our amazing team. I have had no experience of care homes before Mum + Dad had to move in but it was the small things that the staff did, above and beyond. Watching them care for all residents as if they were there own family.

Where does one start with a review for such excellence? My mum
was very frightened arriving at Lucerne House but the manager put her at
ease in an instant and before she was out of the car. Inside, it's like
a hotel. The dementia care is exceptional. For the residents it's
quiet voices and gentle hands, constant attention and support with
humour and laughter from the wonderful staff. Visiting relatives too
are treated not only with care and compassion but also to coffee,
tea, cake and even lunch.
Mum's time at Lucerne House was a great comfort for her and a
great comfort for my family and me. We knew she hadn't long to live
and when the time came for end of life care, the exemplary way in
which the nursing staff looked after her during those last days is

something I'll remember and be grateful for forever.

My brother has been a resident of Lucerne House, Exeter for one year.
During this time he has been treated with outstanding care and dignity.
The standard of care is exemplary from every member of staff, showing compassion, patience and respectfulness at all times.
Their cheerfulness, empathy and gentle approach, are qualities always present, to both resident (and relative), often during very difficult and demanding times.
My brother's mixed dementia can be challenging at times, but with their caring, professional and knowledgeable approach, I have peace of mind knowing that he couldn't be in better hands.
Lucerne House is a very happy care home providing a huge variety of daily activities, giving stimulation and enjoyment to all residents, to which relatives and visitors are welcome.
Choosing a care home for a loved one was the most difficult decision I have ever made.

But one, I have never regretted, as Lucerne House is exceptional .

Starting from the top, the best part of this care home is the staff, they are amazing. From the manager all the way through, they cannot do enough for residents and guests alike.
The food is really good as are the choices
The gardens are immaculate
The entertainment staff are really good and my mum loves the music and craft sessions.
The en-suite rooms are spacious and cosy as is the living room and other amenity areas.
Most importantly, my mum is really settled, safe, happy and has lots of fiends in both the staff and residents alike.

Thanks for everything you do at Lucerne

I very rarely write reviews... I hadn't been in a dementia ward before and I did wonder (and worry) what it might be like spending a lot of time visiting my Mum in one - somewhere where every resident suffers from the condition. But my time on the Memory Lane ward was a genuinely uplifting experience. There was joy, laughter, innocence, humanity and even some friendships formed. I didn't ever feel uncomfortable.

The nurses and carers were quite simply outstanding - without exception. There was wonderfully supportive, gentle and extremely dignified care given at all times. The care was in plentiful supply too. There was never a time that I couldn't fine a carer or nurse when I needed one. They cared deeply about the families as well as the residents. We were always given detailed updates about Mum. On several occasions, they even brought meals to us when we'd spent the whole day visiting on the ward.

Thank goodness we found Lucerne House. I only wish that we had found it sooner.

Lucerne House is an outstanding home. Every single one of the staff cares deeply about the welfare of our dad. As a family we couldn't have asked for a better place for dad to be cared for. We looked at a number of care homes when trying to find a suitable place for Mum. Barchester Lucerne House Care Home was the only one where we felt 100% comfortable that Mum's needs would be met. We were impressed by the calm, caring atmosphere and well-maintained surroundings at Memory Lane. It was very reassuring to know that Mum was being cared for by carers specially trained in dementia care, during the last six months of her life. Lucerne House comes highly recommended.

We found Barchester Lucerne House Care Home after a somewhat traumatic period where another home was unable to cope with Dad as he kept trying to escape.
From the moment he arrived at Lucerne House, he was treated with dignity and respect and surely felt settled there as he didn't try to escape once.
The staff were wonderful with him (and all the other residents living with dementia), demonstrating a real understanding of the disease and almost instinctively knowing how best to manage Dad and how to cajole him into doing the things he needed to.

I cannot speak highly enough of all the staff. From our first contact with the deputy manager, who totally put us at ease at what was a difficult time for us, to our last contact with the head of the dementia unit, who always had time to chat and reassure us, and the carers who stayed behind after the end of their shift to say goodbye to us when we arrived to say our final goodbye to Dad, they were all, without exception, special people.
