Judgement from non-care-professional with positive intention! spent over 60 minutes!
Plus points: committed personnel/staff, doing the best they can for the residents and activities including animals
(I cannot judge the professional skills of the staff)
Minus point: Too old, too out of time, not efficient housing/building with a labyrinth of corridors and stairs with a too low ceiling.
Minus point: carpets on the floor are outdated (absolute NO-GO) since 1900 in nursing-homes. Resulting in urine-smell in corridors, staff cannot help it nor prevent it.
Minus point: inadequate, uncomfortable, inefficient seats/beds. Personnel should be able to easily reposition residents in an easy and not too physical way. Best would be when personnel should only put residents in a clean seat/bed. Further only move seat-bed from room to social room. Seat-bed could maybe be equipped with more personal entertainment facilities. (need will differ per person) so personnel could spend more time with residents.
In total, I appreciate the intention of Hill House and admire the committed work-attitude of the personnel, but this nursing home should be replaced by a modern house with facilities like wide corridors, without stinky carpet (which personnel simply cannot keep clean) and efficient roomy rooms and social facilities, in general, to ease the work of the personnel to provide more work pleasure and more time to be spent with the residents, which is their core-task.

This will reduce work stress which will benefit all involved: the residents, the personnel and the management, likely reduce workers-illness etc.

Thank you for your review. I understand you are a friend that visits from Holland twice a year and I am aware that the module there is very different from the English home to home approach. We have purchased the business this May and are working our way through a refurbishment of the home, however,...

Have got stronger - treated with care and respect, and any request sorted (except for sorting out the TV connection to the TV, which became frustrating). Food request no bother. Noticed how caring and patient all staff are to other patients who were not as able-bodied or able to verbalise their needs. But feel, bodily inspections (particularly feet) should be done at least once a month for these types of patient - especially if they can't ask for it themselves.

Came here with mixed thoughts after coming from the hospital now received with warmth and dignity. Over the period of being here, my fears gave way to a sense of peace and being safe. This has come by through the wonderful staff with their care, warmth and dedication. I have been treated as a person, not a number. Their brightness and infectious laughter lifts your spirits.

My mother was a resident at Hill House for two years, prior to her passing away. She received excellent care during that time and was always treated with courtesy and respect by all staff. Her visiting family were warmly welcomed and kept fully updated on her medical condition. The entertainment programme is run by devoted staff and is both stimulating and enjoyable. Her room was well equipped, had plenty of storage and was always clean. Laundry was carried out efficiently. Drinks, biscuits and cake were delivered with a cheerful smile and a chat. Overall, I highly recommend Hill House and give it the highest ratings.

Hill House staff were far and above my expectation from all the care and kindness to my husband and myself, to his meals and most impressive, his clothing was ironed and hung up was lovely.

My husband was only with you for ten days but I was so very glad he ended his life in your care.

We are most impressed with the communication at Hill House - among the staff, between staff and residents and between staff and family of the residents.

We have found the laundry services to be very efficient and also the staff cheery and caring.

I have ticked all the boxes below relating to all areas of this nursing home as excellent.

I need not add anything more. The nurses and staff are above exemplary and I feel safe in the knowledge that my beloved mother is receiving the very best care that she could get. The overall atmosphere is joyous. The activities care staff are wonderful. The ladies serving tea and refreshment I now consider my friends. I would recommend this nursing home without a doubt.

My husband was welcomed to Hill House in August 2016. Originally for 1 month trial to see how he would accept the home.
First impression on entering was the cleanliness in reception, 2nd was room was equipped with all facilities needed. As my husband is a double amputee I was finding it hard with lifting him and personal issues. After 1 month we both realized this was a realistic option. The carers work as a team and cannot be praised enough for all the hard work they do. Residents are treated with respect and dignity they deserve. After 2 1/2 years, they are all like friends. We also must mention the entertainments manager who tries to involve everyone to attend her daily sessions of entertainment, treating everyone as special, with quizzes, tribute artists she is so special and loved by everyone, including us. Not forgetting her assistant who does alternate day and does a great job.

Finally a big thank you to Nurses and Staff who provide exceptional care.

Although my father was only with Hilly House for seven days, following his discharge from hospital, we found that the kindness, compassion, care and the dignity he was shown in his final days, was amazing. It was such a comfort to us that the care, the staff and the environment in which he spent those last days, was superb.

I and my Wife were welcomed into Hill House in November 2017. My Wife was evicted from another home in November because the owners had decided to end nursing care. I discovered, immediately, that Hill House is an exception 'care and nursing' home creating an environment in which my Wife has thrived and is much more active and involved. The activities provided are really excellent thanks to the activities carers.

My mother stayed in Hill House for two weeks respite care after the death of her husband. From the moment she arrived, she received wonderful care and attention. All the staff were friendly, kind and compassionate and nothing was too much trouble for them.

They all made her feel very welcome, especially the activities coordinator, who even gave my mother a manicure, which really cheered her up! The whole family are very grateful to all the staff for looking after our mother so well.

My mum passed away on the 1st September at 3.15pm. I was the only family member present at the time of her passing but I had the wonderful sincere love and care of all the staff at Hill House. It has been about 12 days now and we had a small intimate beautiful funeral for her last Friday, of which two staff members attended. Top gals.

This is my second review I have put on this website but it seems only fair to say how great all the people who work there are and how good they have been to our family. So, if you are on this website and you are in the position I have been in with an elderly mother with dementia and cancer at the end, trust me and put your loved one in Hill House! It's the best in Torbay.

God bless to you all and I will pop in now and then to say hello.

We have always had a very warm welcome when visiting Hill House. Mum is very happy and speaks very highly of the staff. She is most appreciative of the activities that are arranged and she clearly benefits from the fun and stimulation that these provide. As we live 140 miles away, it is comforting to know that she is so well cared for.

Towards the end of January 2017, my (partner now deceased) moved into Hill House Brixham on the advice of the hospital until his death on April 8th, 2017. The nursing and caring staff showed my partner devoted care, kindness and humanity until the end.

They were most vigilant and genuine and were consummate professionals throughout and never failing to provide the dignity he deserved.
