I have found the staff to be very caring in what they do under great pressure. My wife appears to be quite happy and contented but having dementia finds it difficult to understand what is happening and always asking when will she be coming home. Any health problems are dealt with well and it is probably
better than trying to get help from a GP at home.
Reply from Andrew Kirby, Home Manager at Oak Lodge Care HomeThank you for your review. It's great to know we are doing everything well. We do love our jobs, and we work not only with a great team, but also have a lovely bunch of residents and families, and one way or another, we make sure everyone is happy, every day.

My mum was admitted to Oak Lodge Care Home five weeks ago and has been cared for by the most amazing team. Mum has said that they are always attentive and supportive and that she feels so much better after a particularly difficult period in her life. She said she loves the food and really enjoys the
cake and a cup of tea in the afternoon! Mum has also said the staff are her new friends now who have helped build her confidence and strength again.
As a relative living far away, I have also been supported and reassured by the team that all Mums needs are being met, and I always feel that I can call the manager and nurses who have always been happy to speak to me about any aspect of Mums care.
I would highly recommend this warm and friendly home with a team who always go the extra mile to help.
Thank you so much.
Reply from Andrew Kirby, Home Manager at Oak Lodge Care HomeThank you, Julie. Your mum is doing well, despite many challenges, but with good support, patience and kindness, she is doing well. It was lovely to see the dogs were able to come and see her yesterday, and we hope she continues to thrive with us. I'm really pleased you feel well informed and included, even though you are living far away.

Oak Lodge is an extremely well organised and welcoming care home. The kind and highly professional staff create a happy atmosphere and treat each resident as an individual with different needs. There is an imaginative range of activities and entertainment - my father particularly enjoyed helping to
restore an old rocking chair, and I hear the cooked breakfasts are pretty good too!

My mother, who has dementia, and my step-father, who does not, came to Oak Lodge in February for a trial period. They settled in well and are now living there permanently. I have found the staff at Oak Lodge always very helpful, friendly and responsive to any questions or requests. We were fortunate
that as soon after they arrived, Covid restrictions were lessening, and we were able to book weekly visits, which have been well organised. The lovely garden is an enjoyable place to sit, and I hear good things about the activities.
Reply from Andy Kirby, Home Manager at Oak Lodge Care HomeThank you, Julia, for your kind comments. The process of moving individual family members into a care home is always complex, but when moving in as a couple, it can be even more of a challenge to get things right. We have been very grateful for all the support your family have given to us, and we are very pleased that as a result your mother and step-father have really settled in well. Please pass on my thanks to the whole family for everything they have done to assist us throughout their stay; it's lovely to have them both living with us at Oak Lodge.

My Mum was a resident at Oak Lodge for just over 4 years. During this time she was cared for and loved by staff and management. She had Alzheimer's and had lost her communication skills but the staff were able to anticipate her needs and looked after her with dignity and respect. As a family, before
Covid restrictions, we visited every day and were greeted warmly by the staff and treated as friends. During Covid when we were unable to visit Mum, Oak Lodge set up a Skype link for us so dad could continue to read to her. When visiting was allowed again Oak Lodge set up the conservatory so that we could see Mum in a safe environment for her and us. When Mum reached end of life in February 2021, we were allowed unrestricted visiting with PPE and when she died the staff were wonderful. I would highly recommend Oak Lodge, the staff and the atmosphere in the home are welcoming and the knowledge that residents will be given the care and support they need brings great comfort.
Reply from Andy Kirby, Home Manager at Oak Lodge Care HomeThank you Janet for your review. Your exceptional dedication to your mum's happiness was amazing, and we are very grateful for the opportunity to share in your mum's life whilst she was with us. Best wishes to you, and do keep in touch.

Mum recently moved to Oak Lodge after her health declined and she was no longer able to care for herself, she quickly settled in and the care she has received has been outstanding. The home is welcoming, well maintained and the staff all seem to go the extra mile for their residents, nothing is too
much trouble for them. The activities team are very proactive in keeping people entertained and are always looking to include everyone in the day's activities.

My father was admitted for palliative care to Oak Lodge in January, and I am immensely grateful to the manager and all of his team for making the admission process as easy as possible; they took great efforts to find out about his likes and dislikes so that his room could be set up with important objects
within view, and he could be offered the food and drink that appealed to him. I am sure that he found this reassuring. Although we could not visit, due to national covid restrictions, I was able to spend an hour with him as he declined and was impressed with the kindness and high standard of care displayed by all staff towards Dad, and also to me, thank you. Whenever I telephoned for twice-daily updates, everyone I spoke to was cheerful, courteous, kind and well informed as to his condition today, this gave me great reassurance too. Dad passed away peacefully, very well cared for and comfortable and I cannot thank the staff involved enough for this.
Reply from Andy Kirby, Home Manager at Oak Lodge Care HomeThank you Heather for a lovely review, I will ensure your comments are shared with all the staff. Thank you for your help in getting everything set up so he felt he was in familiar surroundings, he seemed much reassured by having his favourite things around him.

I could not have asked more from all at Oak Lodge. The care Dad was given was second to none which was even more appreciated because of the restrictions in permitted visits due to the current pandemic.

It helped me cope with the last few weeks knowing he was taken care of with compassion professionalism

and affection.

Thank you all from the bottom of my heart.

My mother has been resident for several months. Assessment is very difficult because it is not possible for family members to visit inside and really get to see how things are done but from what I am able to deduce the care home has managed the coronavirus situation proactively and very competently
and as the situation eases they are taking the best actions that they can to provide visit facilities within government guidelines. As far as I am able to tell my mother has been given a high standard of care and has shown some small improvements in health. The care staff all seem to be highly committed and motivated and there is evidence that my mother is fond of some of her regular carers. They are not good at answering e-mail but otherwise, the manager and team are very approachable and my feeling is that the manager is a very capable and competent manager who has brought about a lot of improvements at Oak Lodge.
Reply from Andy Kirby, Home Manager at Oak Lodge Care HomeThanks Martin, I very much appreciate all your feedback. Although I clearly need to make sure I answer your emails more quickly. We are delighted with your mum's progress, and she seems to be doing very well and is much more settled. You're absolutely right about the care staff, they are truly amazing.

I would like to thank the Manager and his amazing staff for the care and kindness they show to my brother. He has only been there a few months but has now settled really well. He enjoys his banter with the staff and sitting in his garden, weather permitting. Myself and my family just cannot thank you
all for doing such an amazing job with him. Anyone thinking of a home for a loved one I really can't recommend Oak Lodge enough. First-class. Keep up the good work. Many thanks.

I continue to be very impressed by the degree of care shown to my mother by everyone at Oak Lodge. I appreciate the fact that circumstances are very challenging, and working conditions have been made very difficult by the pandemic; it really can't be easy to remain cheerful and upbeat every day, in
spite of the discomfort and the limitations. I've also appreciated the steps undertaken to facilitate garden visits.
I'm sure we all look forward to happier times!
Reply from Andy Kirby, Home Manager at Oak Lodge Care HomeThank you, Peter. It has been in so many ways a very challenging time, but we have been able to spend plenty of really good, quality time with residents whilst keeping everyone safe, which has really brought everyone even closer together. We recognise that family and friends visits are essential to the well-being of the residents here, and are very grateful for family and friends' co-operation with following all the guidance.

What a wonderful kind care home. My dad was extremely well-liked after during his stay at Oak Lodge before his passing. The manager and the charge nurses went above and beyond their duty to make him feel comfortable and well cared for. I can’t thank all the staff enough, they did a fantastic party for
him during his birthday, despite the Covid-19 crisis, which I’m really pleased he got to experience, especially as I couldn’t be there. They were even kind enough to offer video calling opportunities. The care home is in a lovely setting and fantastically clean. I can’t thank them enough from the bottom of my heart. Truly this is a fantastic care home.

My nan and grandad were both in hospitals and due to coronavirus and needing the beds they were both moved to Oak Lodge and as a family we couldn't have been more happy that this care home was chosen for them. The care and support they received was amazing, they may only have been there a couple of
weeks before going home, the staff did everything possible to keep them cared for and calm and relaxed due to the circumstances. Us not being able to visit due to the virus we felt relieved knowing they were in such great hands, daily calls with updates on them and quick response to emails as well. Even though they are home now the manager has rung a couple of times just to check all is going ok which not many people would do. I would not want them to go to any other care home in the future if a home was needed because after the short stay we now know they would be more than cared for here, so a big thank you to the manager and all the staff at Oak Lodge.
Reply from Andy Kirby, Home Manager at Oak Lodge Care HomeThank you Jo for spending a few minutes to show your appreciation for the staff at Oak Lodge. From my first meeting with the home manager, I felt he could be trusted to ensure that my mother received the best care. Although she was only in Oak Lodge for a brief period at the end of life, we were so grateful for the care and kindness that every member of staff showed towards her, my sister and
myself. It was such a comfort to know she was safe, and on the day my mother passed away she was treated with great dignity and sensitivity. We were impressed with the attention paid to all the details important to us.

We're very happy with the care and support provided to our aunt. In her own words, 'it is a care home and they really do care and treat me as an individual'. All the carers we met are professional, caring and very welcoming. The manager is fully aware of all residents' circumstances and very much 'hands-on'.

Impressed when looking for a home for my father, they showed care and compassion. Current Review Score: 9.6 (9.644)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.6 (9.644) out of 10 for Oak Lodge Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.6 out of 5 from 27 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 25 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.644 for Oak Lodge Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (226 Excellents x 5) + (75 Goods x 4) + (9 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Poors x 2) + (4 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 315 Ratings = 4.644
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Oak Lodge Care Home is based on 25 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 47 registered maximum number of service users is 9.4, which has been reached with 25 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

I gained my Health and Social skills and experience at our sister home, Gotton Manor in Taunton, from 2020, where I worked as a care assistant, which was my first experience in a care home.

Working my way up to Team Leader, Senior Carer, Care Coordinator and then Deputy Manager.

During my time at Gotton Manor, I gained a Level 3 and a Level 5 in Leadership in Adult Care, passing both with a Distinction credit.

Recently stepping into the Care Home Managers role at Oak Lodge in Chard, I have been supported all the way by everyone at Harbour Healthcare.

The residents' care and quality of life are my top priority, helped by the amazing & well established team at Oak Lodge.
I have an open-door policy for staff, residents and relatives.

No two days are the same. The care we provide comes from our hearts day in & day out.

Hi, my name is Di. I am the Administrator at Oak Lodge Care Home.

I joined the Oak Lodge Care Home team in March 2018, having previously worked for an advertising agency for 10 years, and also worked for Axminster Carpets as a PA for 9 years.

I enjoy watching horse racing, going to horse shows, dog walking with my little Jack Russell terrier called Bea, and dining out. I am usually the person who answers the phone when you call during office hours and deals with all the administration and paperwork for the home.

Socks the Cat

Job Title: The Boss Joined: 2012

Socks the cat has been in charge of the staff and residents at Oak Lodge Care Home for a number of years. He was born on the 18th of February 2012, and it is believed he is a direct descendant of the Sphynx.

Socks' main duties are sleeping, gathering his strength, eating, and looking at the birds in the garden. He is normally found in the laundry where he has a good supply of food, a bowl of fresh water and some very soft, warm blankets to lay upon on top of the tumble drier. He knows instinctively who likes his company, and has made good friends with many staff and residents in the home.

Socks are extremely tolerant of other pets, so there's no issue with residents seeing their families' pets when they come in to visit.
