Milford House Care Home is a Salisbury residence originally built for the Earl of Ilchester, surrounded by scenic countryside and lovely gardens close to numerous local amenities, offering 24-hour nursing, respite, palliative and end of life care and where visitors and family members are welcome at all times.

The home has been extended and refurbished to provide a supportive and relaxing atmosphere which maximises the charm and character of the property whilst offering dedicated person centre nursing care.

Mum needed nursing home care and was admitted in March just prior to the nationwide lock-down. The worst possible time to go into "care" where she could have felt abandoned by family and friends. However, Barchester Milford House staff have been wonderful throughout the whole pandemic keeping families
informed. Skype calls were offered, which for my 91-year-old mother was an experience. However, she was well supported through these and enjoyed having a chat. We have subsequently visited on 1 July under strict guidance (absolutely necessary) and my daughter and I were so pleased to see my mother looking well and very happy. I feel I could not have chosen a better home for my mother. Thank you to all the staff who have worked so hard during these recent months.
Reply from Marie Therese Tiernan, General Manager at Barchester Milford House Care HomeThank you so much for your kind comments which I will ensure get passed on to all our staff members. We have worked really hard to keep all our residents and their families and friends in touch and it is really rewarding to hear that your mother enjoyed the new experience. Like you, we are all delighted that we are now able to facilitate visits - albeit outside and under strict guidance - and it has been wonderful to see families re-united although socially distanced.

My father is very well looked after in Milford House. He was with my mother until she passed away in April 2020. Dad was escorted to the funeral of Mum and was and still is well looked after. They were both very happy from 2015-2020 in the home. Dad is still very well looked after. Thank you to all
staff in this difficult time.
Reply from Marie Therese Tiernan, General Manager at Barchester Milford House Care HomeThank you so much for your kind words. This has been a difficult time for everyone and the situation for your Dad and yourselves has been especially hard. Now that we are able to offer outside visits we hope that this will bring some relief and comfort to you all.

My parents (both aged 89) moved into Milford House together in December 2019. Although there were no double rooms available, the manager was very helpful and arranged two adjacent rooms for them. These were set up as a living room and a bedroom so that Mum and Dad could sleep in the same room together.
Recently, during the COVID-19 lockdown, they have moved into two larger next-door rooms, which they tell me they are even happier with.
The care my parents have received over the last 6-months has been exemplary. They both have chronic health conditions which made staying in their own home untenable, even with care from me and daily visits from carers. Neither of them was at all happy about moving into a care home, but they have settled very well at Milford House which is testament to the high standard of care they have received there from all of the staff. I feel at ease now knowing my parents are safe and well cared for at Milford House.
Reply from Marie Therese Tiernan, General Manager at Barchester Milford House Care HomeThank you so much for sharing your parents with us at Milford House. We are very proud of the care we provide and it is lovely for that to be reflected in your thoughtful comments.

We have always been impressed with the standard of care provided by Milford House. The home always has a warm and friendly atmosphere, the staff go above and beyond what would be expected. During this Coronavirus crisis, it is comforting to know that my brother-in-law is being so well looked after
particularly as we are unable to visit as we live abroad, knowing he is cared for gives us great peace of mind.
Many thanks to you all.
Reply from Marie-Therese Tiernan, General Manager at Barchester Milford House Care HomeThank you so much for your kind words which we really appreciate especially at this difficult time for everyone. We look forward to welcoming you back to Milford when things return to normal. In the meantime, we will all work our hardest to keep your brother-in-law and all our residents safe and well.

Very welcoming and friendly atmosphere given that my dad stayed as a respite user for just two weeks. My father found the staff very warm and engaging and they took the time to talk with him. He thought the quality of food was excellent, but he would have liked a warm drink, biscuit or snack in the
evening, bearing in mind his dinner was at 5.30 pm.
Reply from Marie Therese Tiernan, General Manager at Barchester Milford House Care HomeThank you for taking the trouble to compliment our warm and friendly team. Your comments have been shared across the home and we take on board that we have some work to do in some areas. I'm glad that your dad enjoyed his meals during his stay but we will strive to ensure that everyone who stays in our home is aware that drinks and snacks are available at any time of day and night. We hope he would consider another stay with us.

My parents initially moved into Milford House together. We knew Dad only had a short time to live, so it was important that he was well looked after and that they would both be happy. Sadly we lost Dad shortly afterwards and now just a few months later we have sadly lost our mum. Everyone at Milford
House has been exceptional, they have been friendly, caring and very professional. The care shown to both Mum and Dad could not be bettered. They were both shown respect, courtesy and loving care and for the time Mum was there on her own she settled in better than we could have hoped. At the end of their lives, Mum and Dad were respected and treated with dignity throughout and the whole family felt supported.
Reply from Marie Therese Tiernan, General Manager at Barchester Milford House Care HomeIt was a joy and a pleasure to have your parents live in our care home and it was our honour to look after them. We were privileged to be party to the obvious warmth and love that your family had.

There is a welcoming atmosphere - coffee and hot drinks plus cake in the reception area is a nice touch. Staff are unfailingly polite, friendly and helpful. The accommodation is very pleasant and maintained to a high standard. There is a feeling of spaciousness and height. The gardens are a particular
feature of this home and there is a sunny inner courtyard garden with tables and chairs and parasols. The menu of the day is displayed in the front hall. Food and presentation is of a high standard.

Our mum was a resident of Milford House for thirteen months. She was well-loved by the staff and always treated as family. She was well cared for with her personal hygiene and always looking clean and looked after. She celebrated her 100th Birthday with a party laid on by the home. This was much appreciated
by the family. Leading up to and after her death all the staff have been caring and supportive to us.
Thank you so much for your care and attention.
Reply from Marie Therese Tiernan, General Manager at Barchester Milford House Care HomeThank you for your kind words. It is our honour that you entrusted your mum to our care and that she became part of the Milford family.

Mum went into Milford House for a week's respite care. To be honest, it was a case of going to the first home which had a place at short notice. However, I was very impressed and Mum settled down quite quickly, so much so that she has now moved in permanently. Milford House has the added bonus of being
just 10 minutes' drive from my home and I know the manager, which give me added confidence. I think Mum will be very happy there.

I have had many years experience of clients residing with you. My present client came to you with medical problems with her legs, which you have resolved.
She was disinclined to eat and you have succeeded in persuading her to do so. I think your care of her has been first class, often under difficult
circumstances and this has also been my experience in the past.

I can't recommend Milford House highly enough. The loving way in which they cared for my Mother in her final months was amazing. She had been very ill following a stroke and became much better after moving to Milford House. The staff are lovely, from the nurses to the office, to the kitchen, to the
laundry. I was always made really welcome and used to just pop in at any time. I found that the staff were quite prepared to go the extra mile to make Mother comfortable. She had a lovely, big airy room which she felt relaxed in. My partner and I cold called on seven nursing homes and Milford House were the only one to take a medical history before even showing us around. Any questions that I made were responded to promptly and with grace. I am sorry my Mother couldn't enjoy all the activities that were on offer more but I can't think of any place better for her to have been. Thank you all.

I have been so impressed with the overall care and kindness shown to my Mother at all times by all the lovely staff at Milford House. It is a huge upheaval moving to residential care and my Mother was quite poorly when she first arrived at Milford House. The wonderful staff have devised a care plan
to manage her awful pain from Osteoarthritis. I am confident that my Mother will thrive at Milford House. The food is excellent and freshly cooked meals and homemade cakes look very appetising. The gardens are beautiful also.

My mother had to move into Milford House when full-time care wasn't enough for her at home. Current Review Score: 9.7 (9.671)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.671) out of 10 for Barchester Milford House Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 28 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 27 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.671 for Barchester Milford House Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (241 Excellents x 5) + (73 Goods x 4) + (7 Satisfactorys x 3) + (7 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 328 Ratings = 4.671
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Barchester Milford House Care Home is based on 27 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 71 registered maximum number of service users is 14.2, which has been reached with 27 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
