Overall Experience
My mother moved to the Reminiscence Unit at Sunrise of Edgbaston on January 3rd 2017. This followed the sudden closure of the care home she was in. It is still early days but so far we are so pleased with the welcome we have all had from the staff, who are unfailingly cheerful, polite and reassuring. The Dementia Community Relations dealt with the clerical and financial side of things efficiently and everything seemed to go really smoothly.
It is such a relief that all the staff on the Reminiscence Unit are trained in dementia care and they are so quiet and gentle with the residents. The unit is calm and peaceful and every effort is made to maintain the dignity of the residents. My mother is starting to settle in her new surroundings and we feel confident that she will be well cared for.

Our aim for her is that she will be "contented" and we think this may be achievable at Sunrise.

Frequent complaints to the management with regards to the laundry service have resulted in little or no action. There is a definite lack of communication with the management and carers. The carers do their best they can. There is no liaison with the care home and family regarding mothers care and what is happening to her. Mother appears to pay an extortionate amount of money to either sit in her wheelchair asleep or be on "Bed Rest" asleep, she has not been outside of the home since she has been here two years except when family take her to hospital appointments.

It took my parent a couple of days to settle in, but by the end of the two week respite, my parents were looked after wonderfully. They had put on weight, more talkative and generally full of life. It was a pleasure to pick them up. We will be using Sunrise again. The girls were fantastic.

Good homely surrounding. My only criticism would be not enough staff seem to be around on Saturdays. A long time waiting around to be taken to toilet and to room from dining room, on one occasion recently no alarm call bell on her, it was accidentally sent to laundry on an item of clothing and a replacement wasn't available for several hours. This is bad practice. Your staff work very hard but need extra support.

Five of us visited our friend to celebrate her birthday, although deteriorating with dementia she is well cared for with kindness and dignity. We had lunch with her which was excellent and very good value for money. The only negative aspect which has happened before is that at the change over of staff period (2-2:20ish), there was a very long wait for the resident to be taken to the toilet which distressed her.

Kim-Marie NewtonJob Title:Home Manager

I have over 20 years of experience working in health & social care, having worked for the NHS, Care Quality Commission, and private care sector, including Care Coordinator, Peripatetic Manager, Regional Support Manager and General Manager. I hold a BA (Hons) Health & Social Care and a Level 5 Diploma in Leadership & Management. I’m also proud to be a dementia pioneer and a mental health mentor.

Before joining Metchley Manor, I was a Regional Support Manager for a large care provider, overseeing residential dementia, general nursing, palliative care and younger adults with enduring mental health needs.

I’m passionate about putting residents at the heart of everything we do. For me, person-centred care means making sure every day is meaningful and special for each individual we support. I feel privileged to share my experience with such a dedicated team and to lead the way in delivering exceptional care and service to residents and their families.
