The Review Score of 9.4 (maximum of 10) for Newstead House Nursing and Residential Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.5 out of 5 from 17 Reviews over all time. This Average Rating is also the rating value for Newstead House Nursing and Residential Home in Google's Search Results - more info

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.9 out of 5 from 8 positive Reviews in the last 12 months.

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating of all Reviews over all time. For each review the Care Home / service is rated Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Poor or Very Poor on a number of areas eg Staff, Management etc. The Care Home receives points for each rating as follows: Excellent = 5. Good = 4. Satisfactory = 3. Poor = 2. Very Poor = 1. These points are added up and then divided by the total number of completed ratings to generate the average rating.

    The Average Rating of 4.535 for Newstead House Nursing and Residential Home is calculated as follows: ( (118 Excellents x 5) + (74 Goods x 4) + (10 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 202 Ratings = 4.535

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 12 months. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with 'Extremely Likely' or 'Likely' in answer to the question 'How likely are you to recommend this Care Home to friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment?'

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 5 Positive Reviews, 3 points for the first Positive Review and then 0.25 Points for each of the next 4 Positive Reviews.

    2. 1 point is available for reaching a target number of Positive Reviews based on 20% of the number of registered maximum number of service users. If the target is partially reached then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home with 50 registered maximum number of service users has a target of 10 Positive Reviews, if it has 10 or more Positive Reviews it will receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews will receive 0.7 points.

    3. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. The calculation is the same as above, except the points are divided by 2.

The 4.87 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Newstead House Nursing and Residential Home is based on 8 positive Reviews in the last 12 months and is calculated as follows:

    1. 3 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 = 4

    2. Target of 9.2 positive Reviews (46 registered maximum number of service users ÷ 5). 8 Reviews ÷ 9.2 Target = 0.870

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

My wife has been a resident patient at Newstead Home for ten weeks as I write this.
During that time she has been treated with continual kindness and care by a friendly, kind staff.
She gets regular treatment for her medical problems in an attempt to alleviate the constant pain she suffers.
The room where she resides could not be nicer - clean, bright and roomy.
The staff are very friendly towards me also and I feel that she could not be in a better place.

Impressions are generally positive. Nursing and admin staff are friendly and helpful with enquiries. Residential and reception areas are clean and well maintained. The calendar of activities for residents is well-planned and well attended - in particular, Christmas Carol Service and Summer Garden Fete. A negative factor is that hot meals (lunch) are served luke warm and not always consistent with printed menus.

Newstead House Nursing and Residential Home is very welcoming and staff are approachable. However, I have found it difficult to get to know regular staff due to numerous agency staff being on duty. I think continuity is very important and that residents get to know the staff.
Activities could be better but you have a very enthusiastic member of staff who has lots of ideas to take forward. He has lots of ideas.

Management, nursing staff and carers all excellent. Nothing phases them. Will do anything to help. Would highly recommend to anyone else. Management etc are so caring and sympathetic, will sort any problem out. My partner cannot write or speak after a stroke which left him paralysed down right side. Management, nurses and carers understand him which is nice. I can go home at night knowing he is well looked after.

My 95-year-old mother spent 3 weeks in respite at Newstead in January to try and build herself up after becoming very unwell. The kindness and care shown to her by all the staff, without exception, was outstanding. I know that if it became necessary for my mother to move to a nursing home Newstead is somewhere that she would feel happy and secure.

Thank you Stephanie for your kind words and please keep popping into see us with your Mum as she has made some good friends here.

I regularly visit my mother in the care home and at no time have had any cause for concern.
I always feel that she is well cared for and treated with dignity.
My only minor concern is a security issue, it may be possible for someone to enter the premises unchallenged and gain access to the residents.

Thank you for your kind comments. I note your minor concern regarding security, we do take the security of our residents seriously, staff do challenge anyone that they do not recognise, however, there is a fine balance in trying to keep Newstead House as someone's home and meeting the needs of the residents.

I cannot praise the home enough for the care they have given to my husband. It was difficult to find a placement for him but the manager agreed to accept him. He is very happy there and when we visit him are always greeted by any member of staff we see on the way to his room.

I think we have all come a long way since your husband was admitted to Newstead House. As a team we couldn't have got as far as we have without the support & trust we have received from you, your family and the outside professionals. Thank you.

The staff are all very professional and friendly towards the residents. Nothing is too much trouble and it is always possible to speak to one of the staff when necessary.
The home is a very caring environment and the events that are organised are helpful in stimulating the residents.

Thank you Jill for taking the time to write a review, it is a privilege to look after your husband who always has a smile for us. For the team it is equally important to get to know families, thank you for your continued support

So you read so many things about homes ..and let's face it ,it's very hard before you choose one ..in this case for my father.

Yes read reviews ..get a tour ..ask around ...wander round the building ..scrutinise the website and the quality report ..meet the person in charge .. review the costs etc ..but hey you never know.

It..isn't set in glorious woodland ...it's not isolated..but goodness ..beauty here is more than skin deep.

If the culture of a place is set top down, well the manager must be doing something right ..in fact more than right.

My dad died this week ..he was there 5 months ..very very poorly ..not an easy patient ..but the level of care ..the attitude ...the nursing expertise ...the sensitivity ...the quality/attitude of everyone I met ..the cleanliness ..the devotion ..the thought ..the feeling it left me with ...they didn't need to do that ..go that far ..be that diligent and caring, but they were and in the final days ..exceptional..just writing this makes me cry .

On behalf of the team at Newstead House we would like to thank John for his kind words. In John's Father's case, having had time to reflect it makes it all worthwhile, which as a team we could not have done without the assistance of the outside professionals who have supported us so well.

Although Mum was only a resident for a short while, from the first meeting with the manager we were sure that she would be well cared for. I particularly loved the fact that she was referred to as a person and not a number or statistic. She was always treated with dignity and respect and the staff, even though they were busy, took the time to answer our questions and keep us informed of her progress and treatment. Thank you all.

Kim Seavor, Manager at Newstead House Nursing and Residential Home responded to this review on 20 Jun 2016:

It was a pleasure for our team to have had the opportunity to care for your Mum and to have met you and your family.

My father entered this establishment as a palliative patient. I am a palliative care nurse in the north east, so extremely aware of how patients should be nursed and treated in the last days of their lives. I found no fault with my fathers care what so ever. He died extremely peacefully and received the care I have seen in a hospice. I visited the home at many different times of the day and night over a week and found staff sitting with dad, carrying out care. Always aware of his current condition. To the Manager and the staff there, thank you so very very much.

My mum passed away recently after only being in Newstead for 3 months, but the staff made those 3 months the most happiest we could have wished for. From going above and beyond their daily duties nothing was ever too much trouble, to spending time after their shift had finished to sit and chat with mum, to preparing a special meal to encourage her to eat. These are genuine caring people who brightened my mums days who gave me the reassurance of not having to visit everyday because I knew my mum was safe and happy. Thank you so very much for everything, going to miss you all.

My Mother needed to go into respite for two weeks in June 2015 as the family were going on holiday and she could not be left on her own. Newstead House was recommended by Social Services, on viewing we were pleased at the look and the way the Home was run and thought that it would suit my Mother.
After her two weeks in respite Mum enjoyed her stay and the weekly bingo. So the activities coordinator said I could take Mum in whenever she wanted to go. So she continued to go to the bingo every two weeks.
My Mother spent some time in hospital in August following a fall at home. After much thought we realised that she needed full time care. Mum said that if she couldn’t go back home she would only want to go to Newstead House where she went permanently in September. She enjoys the company and gets on well with the members of staff.

I have been extremely impressed with Newstead in Hereford. All the staff, without exception are kind and considerate and very efficient in all aspects of their duties. They are more than carers, they are part of the family and although always busy can find time to bring a bit of humour and laughter into the lives of not only my Mother-in-Law but to all that come in contact with them. I can't praise them highly enough and only hope that if I require the services of a care home, I end up in the same environment as my dear M-in-L.

My mother has been in care at Newstead for nearly two years and in that time she has been treated with kindness, care and affection. All the staff have been extremely efficient in their duties and have been like an extension of my family. The joy and happiness they bring to my mother through their daily contact is amazing, it's over and above what we thought possible in a care home environment.

My brother had good care, lovely accommodation and plenty of activities to keep him happy.

Following a respite period elsewhere, mum became a resident of Newstead House in March/April time 2013 and what a transformation! She's very happy, enjoys the food and always has a funny story to tell us about as she puts it, " her carers".
I find the staff very friendly and given Newstead is an open house it goes without saying you have nothing to hide! It's important that elderly folk bring memories from home and Newstead ensures this in abundance (it feels like I'm walking into mum's lounge). In addition, the decor is pleasing on the eye for visitors and the cleanliness cannot be questioned. Finally, I'm aware of how hard the staff work, sometimes in difficult circumstances -well done and keep it up!!
