Galanos House is situated on the edge of Southam, a small market town in the heart of the Warwickshire countryside. The home is set within a number of attractive landscaped gardens. The home organises regular shopping trips in their minibus, as well as visits to the nearby historic towns of Warwick, Stratford-upon-Avon and Rugby.

At Galanos House, they recognise the importance of residents’ shared experiences. People there form special bonds and make new friends. They offer nursing, residential and dementia care, as well as respite and day care. The home is purpose built and opened on its current site in September 2002. It now has 91 spacious single rooms, all of which have en-suite facilities. The smaller lounge areas and seating alcoves give the home a cosy, comfortable feeling, where you can sit and relax with a good book, enjoy a board game or chat with friends over a coffee. The air-conditioned conservatory gives the space an outdoor feel with an indoor temperature.

The care at Galanos House has been classified as ‘outstanding’ following a Care Quality Commission inspection in November 2017. Galanos House was also named ‘Care Home of the Year 2015’ by the National Care Awards, for its high standard of care and dedicated dementia care unit, Poppy Lodge.

The social side to life at Galanos House is very important. Their wellbeing team make sure there’s always lots to look forward to, including quizzes, art and craftwork, dancing, singing and concerts. Guests are always welcome to join residents for a meal in the dining room. The in-house cinema and bar add to the residents’ enjoyment. Camaraderie, social interaction and helping residents pursue their hobbies and interests play a big part in the day-to-day life at Galanos House.

My aunt has been a resident of Galanos House for 4 years. She has received an unprecedented level of care from all the staff especially considering her disabilities. Her room and facilities have been adapted to ensure she can be as independent as possible whilst the nursing staff have also tendered
to her every medical need. I and her family cannot praise the home enough. There is stability in the home through guidance from an experienced and long-serving senior management team which enables it to be run efficiently and effectively. The caring and supportive attitude from all levels of staff is reflected and experienced not only by the residents but by myself and her family. We are always kept up to date with regard to my aunt's health, wellbeing and needs and it is lovely to know that she is in a safe, clean and supportive environment. It really is home to her. I believe she is in one of the best care homes in the country thanks to everyone involved.

I found the staff at the meeting very helpful. They wanted to know what we thought about all aspects of Galanos House Care Home. Any questions we asked they answered and gave good reasons as to why things are done a certain way. I find all residents are treated with great patience and care and feel
my mother is well looked after and I have great gratitude to know she is safe and being so well cared for.

I'm pleased to have my Mother in Galanos House. I can’t visit often, but always know she is being well looked after. Great environment. I’m impressed with infection control / Covid measures. Food looks good. Staff seem patient and caring with my Mother, despite her challenging behaviour. Security is
good regarding entry/exit of the PoppyLodge dementia unit.
The 6 monthly phone reviews are comprehensive and my input is valued.
As I work, I can’t get to carers meetings - so I’d love them to be held via Zoom also, and for minutes to be published for me to read.
It’s sometimes difficult knowing who to contact via phone/email if I want to communicate with staff.
I don’t like sending money through the post, so would like to be able to send cheques/money electronically for her “pocket money”.
I am most impressed with Galanos House though, and would recommend it to others.

Mum has spent many years as a resident at Poppy Lodge, initially giving her a new lease of life and companionship that she really needed at a time when her quality of life appeared diminished. Mum has become part of the family there as we have ourselves.
All the staff are warm and welcoming and the
level of care is excellent. Mum is supported, nourished and protected by the Poppy Lodge family and by extension Galanos House.
In my experience, Poppy Lodge is beyond comparison in the care and support it offers residents and their families, it has given us peace of mind knowing that Mum is cared for in a lovely environment.

I enjoy volunteering in the sporting memories sessions hosted by Galanos House. We have a small but regular group of attendees who seem to appreciate the conversations and activities. I admire the skill, enthusiasm and dedication of the staff and other volunteers involved.
One disappointment has been
the rescheduling of the sessions from fortnightly to monthly, which means that on several months in the future they will clash with another activity for me, which takes place on the alternate week to sporting memories. As a result, I shall miss sessions.

I’m a relatively new volunteer at Galanos House but every time I attend for one of the very many varied activities it always strikes me what a happy, caring and homely place it is.
It’s not just a home but each individual’s actual home where the staff are so caring and enthusiastic, always ready with
a smile or cheery comment but equally importantly providing care and support in a comprehensive and dignified way for each resident.
The décor and amenities encapsulate the warm feel of the place, after all it's home so somewhere to be comfortable and happy as we would all want to be in our latter years.

Dementia Day Care offers excellent supportive care. Volunteering there is very enjoyable as the staff are very friendly and welcoming. The care offered is very well structured and geared to fulfilling a diverse array of activities for the day residents to participate in.

I have found that over the five years my husband has been a resident of Galanos House, I have been welcomed into the family that is Galanos. Nothing is too much trouble and there is always a member of staff at hand if need be.
The level of care is excellent, I know that my husband couldn't be in a
better place, he is supported emotionally as well as physically and it is a joy to see my husband enjoying the activities that are on every day.

Have found that the care received is of a good standard and our relative always appears clean and well cared for. Relative's room is always clean and tidy. Laundry is always returned promptly and of a good standard. The staff are always friendly and helpful. Would like more communication from senior

My wife went to Galanos House in February 2017, when she was taken ill with an infection of the urine. She has had the best care continuously since that date. The nursing staff and the care staff are very conscientious, indeed, helpful, caring and concerned. She has received exemplary treatment, I don't

The accommodation, service levels and administration are excellent, however, the overriding feature within Poppy Lodge is the patience, enthusiasm and caring attitude of the staff. It is particularly pleasing to see these aspects displayed by the younger staff.

I am very happy with the care and attention my mum receives. I have only given a 'good' rating for her room as the window catch has been missing for a few weeks. It may, of course, be on the 'to-do' list.
Telephone communication is much improved, although I wish that the staff would answer with their
name. Small point.
Overall, a happy home.

The staff are kind and very caring. The residents are treated with respect and the lead-up to Christmas was very busy and there was plenty of choice for things to do. The home is always clean and feels very welcoming when you enter.

Jo-Anne

Jo-Anne Wilson, MBE

Job Title: Registered Manager Joined: 2003

Jo-Anne became the Registered Manager of Galanos House in 2003. Since then she has made a difference in not only the lives of many residents, but also staff members past and present, volunteers, and all the friends that come through the doors of Galanos House.


Jo-Anne was presented with an MBE by His Majesty King Charles III in February 2023; in addition to this, Jo-Anne holds the title of Queen's Nurse and sits on many boards including the Quality Matters board, the Task and Finish group for the RCN, and is the chair of the South Warwickshire Registered Managers Network for Skills for Care.
