The Firs is a delightful home located near the Derbyshire town of Codnor. Resident wellbeing is the absolute focus, as the home works hard to ease every resident into their new environment, recognising that for many people moving into a care home can be a daunting transition. The Firs team wants to reassure visitors that many people move in and discover a newfound sense of freedom and comfort. To support this, residents are encouraged to personalise their rooms with their cherished possessions.

With a dedicated activities team on-site every day, there are various ways to find enjoyment, from actives in the home to regular trips out. Activities are carefully planned to ensure they are person-centred and meaningful for the individuals residing within the home.

The home continually strives to enhance its services, as demonstrated by the recent development of the cosy lounge and revamped garden. The home also has access to the facilities at Codnor Park such as the new 'Tea Room'.

For those interested in learning more about The Firs and the range of care options provided, a visit to the home is welcomed. To schedule a visit, individuals can contact The Firs. If preferring to drop by, it is kindly requested to avoid meal times.

Happy with all the work that’s carried out in the home. We can see the hard work put in by each individual member of staff. There is always a friendly atmosphere and warm welcome each time we visit. The staff are always quick to meet the needs of residents and clearly know them well. Activities and
events provided are always brilliantly organised

The care and compassion shown to my mum go above and beyond what is expected. The staff are friendly and approachable and nothing is too much trouble. We as a family can rest assured that mum is well cared for and is safe and secure at all times and that is worth its weight in gold. The Firs is like
an extended family and I for one would highly recommend it.

My sister came into The Firs for end-of-life care. I can not fault the love and care she and her family received from the moment she entered the home. It wasn't possible for her to be at home in her final weeks, but the staff were brilliant at ensuring a homely environment allowing my sister a comfortable
loving place to live her last 2 weeks of life.

I visit my mother regularly and the staff are always helpful. My mother is well cared for and her dignity preserved. Before she became ill 'end of life' she enjoyed many activities - bingo, quizzes etc. The staff respond quickly when the buzzer is rung. Although they are always busy they make time to
have a 'short chat'! the staff show great empathy and really care for their resident's well-being. I would be willing to recommend The Firs to anyone! Well done to all!

Mum has been in The Firs for nearly a year, during which time she has been well cared for. When we visit, the staff are always friendly and welcoming, and the general atmosphere of the home is good. The staff take the trouble to provide care and stimulation for the residents in the form of activities
and entertainment.

My Grandma is currently a resident in the care home and she is being really well cared for - from having her hair and nails done to crafts and even days out. It's the most freedom she has had in years! They're always so lovely with our family, and take the time to talk to both the residents and family
visiting. I can't thank them enough for making my Nan comfortable during her stay and genuinely caring for her as a person.

Due to my mother's deteriorating health, she was admitted to the Firs for respite and then continuing care. She has been treated with the utmost kindness and respect. Her mental health has improved due solely to the care provided in this professional, but incredibly welcoming establishment. My family
and I cannot thank all the staff enough for the work they do, the care they provide is second to none. Due to their vigilance, my mother's health is constantly monitored and the level of communication between the home and ourselves means that we are always aware of any changes, good or bad, in our mother's well-being. My mother was a reluctant care home resident, to say the least, but The Firs has changed her opinion and that of my family too.

I cannot say how pleased I am with this nursing home. Everyone from the management to the cleaners are really lovely and caring. My son (who is 44 years old) has been at The Firs since February when he was transferred from another home further away, and since coming to The Firs he is much better in
himself. He is nearer home, and the staff are lovely and do all they can to help him. He has a brain tumour and had a stroke last year, so has difficulty communicating, but they are so caring here. They keep me informed of any changes in his condition and I know he's in good hands. I highly rate this nursing home.

I am enjoying doing craft things. They help me with showering because it's unsafe to be left alone. I have a key worker who helps me a lot when I am feeling sad or angry because I suffer from bi-polar, controlled by tablets. I've been given sleeping tablets which was for two weeks but now I've been
on them three months, now I don't really need them.

My wife is extremely ill; I'm able to visit due to this. The girls have been amazing during the months that I have been visiting. Beautiful decorations and carers spending time with the individual people staying here. Visiting within the bedrooms due to a case of Covid19 on the premises. When I visit,
it is necessary to wear a special gown, new mask and gloves to ensure safety. The nurses are efficient, kind and understanding. The carers are lovely with the patients. I'm limited with the short period of information due to the pressures of Covid19, but the foundations are well thought out and managed.

Staff and resident interaction is lively, lots of activities and information is displayed and the whole ambience is friendly and happy.
Staff are very knowledgeable about my Auntys needs, likes, dislikes and abilities. Security is excellent. The food looks nice and smells good. My dear Aunty is very happy there. Thank you for looking after her.

Current Review Score: 10.0 (9.961)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 10 (9.961) out of 10 for The Firs Care Home with Nursing is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 5.0 out of 5 from 19 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 19 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.986 for The Firs Care Home with Nursing is calculated as follows: ( (216 Excellents x 5) + (3 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 219 Ratings = 4.986
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.975 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Firs Care Home with Nursing is based on 19 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.975
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 42 registered maximum number of service users is 8.4, which has been reached with 19 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

I love the feeling of going home knowing that something that I have been able to do has had a massive positive impact on the people living in our home.

The residents drive my passion. I have so much love for them, seeing them smile and enjoy living at the home and being able to support people who are on end of life care, knowing that you have provided exactly what they have needed in that time.

I often forget I’m at work because it feels like home. The people around are like family and I love them all dearly.
One day we will be old and I’d like to know that there is someone to fight for me the way I fight for them.
