The Firs is a delightful home located near the Derbyshire town of Codnor. Resident wellbeing is the absolute focus, as the home works hard to ease every resident into their new environment, recognising that for many people moving into a care home can be a daunting transition. The Firs team wants to reassure visitors that many people move in and discover a newfound sense of freedom and comfort. To support this, residents are encouraged to personalise their rooms with their cherished possessions.

With a dedicated activities team on-site every day, there are various ways to find enjoyment, from actives in the home to regular trips out. Activities are carefully planned to ensure they are person-centred and meaningful for the individuals residing within the home.

The home continually strives to enhance its services, as demonstrated by the recent development of the cosy lounge and revamped garden. The home also has access to the facilities at Codnor Park such as the new 'Tea Room'.

For those interested in learning more about The Firs and the range of care options provided, a visit to the home is welcomed. To schedule a visit, individuals can contact The Firs. If preferring to drop by, it is kindly requested to avoid meal times.

The staff and nurses tried very hard with my mother in view of her not wanting to live. I lost her on the 4th July 2014 and it was also a loss to them, their concern and sadness was evident. I couldn't have chosen a better place to assist my mother in her last days and also the love shown to me and
my family was so endearing.
I will always be thankful to them for their dedication to their jobs, I was made to feel very special also at all times. I'm so grateful for the last day of her life it was unbelievable how they helped me.

My first experience of The Firs was the day I went to look round. The staff were so lovely and welcoming.

I decided it would be a nice, caring place to put my mother and I was right. The staff have all been lovely and professional at the same time.

I have no doubt at all that she is being well

cared for.

Thank you to all the staff.

I come to The Firs to visit my mother who has been here for several months. This is a friendly, cheerful place for those with nursing needs and I always see the staff giving one to one care to the residents. Al in all, I am happy that mum receives the very best care.

All the residents are looked after and continually monitored. The staff interact with the residents regularly which helps to maintain general alertness in a pleasant situation. Individual needs are met with special care to each and every resident. The home setting is pleasant and quiet with open aspects
over a well-maintained garden.

My husband has been at The Firs Nursing Home now for four years he is looked after very well. The staff are caring and kind and inform me straight away if he is unwell. I feel that the staff look after me as well as him. The Firs is a nice happy home with all new furnishings and everyone is friendly
and kind everyone's dignity is respected. I would highly recommend it.

My mother was moved from hospital to the care home because of dementia problems. She was welcomed from the start with smiles and understanding of her needs. Having lived alone for 43 years this was a big adjustment for her but the staff helped her settle. There is always someone willing to smile and
offer a cup of tea. As a family this is all new to us so we have been eased in too. To hand your mother over to others is never easy but at The Firs staff understand and help. We trust them.

Mum was admitted on 5th February. Prior to that we made two visits to the home and the staff were very helpful and welcoming to us. Mums admission went well and she has a lovely room with some of her own things to make her feel at home. She has settled in well. We are very impressed with the atmosphere
of the home which feels "homely" and not in a institution. The staff are caring and appear to be interested and enthusiastic in their work. We have attended a meeting of staff and carers and are impressed with their plans for the future. They have even taken everyone to a tea dance which was enjoyed by all. We feel mum is having the best of care.

We looked at many care homes before we found The Firs. The warm welcome, friendly atmosphere and happy residents said it all. Mum and dad settled straight in and soon became part of a new and very large family. Mum passed a few days ago and the staff and management have been amazing. They have looked
after dad like he was their own father, lifting his spirits when they can, and taking time to sit and listen when dad wanted to talk. Everyone from the domestics to the management are lovely and do their job with a smile. This is the perfect place for dad.

My mother has been a resident at The Firs for two years and in all that time she has been shown nothing but love, care and understanding. Her dementia can make her difficult to deal with at times, but the care shown by some staff in particular has been outstanding.

Current Review Score: 10.0 (9.961)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 10 (9.961) out of 10 for The Firs Care Home with Nursing is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 5.0 out of 5 from 19 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 19 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.986 for The Firs Care Home with Nursing is calculated as follows: ( (216 Excellents x 5) + (3 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 219 Ratings = 4.986
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.975 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Firs Care Home with Nursing is based on 19 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.975
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 42 registered maximum number of service users is 8.4, which has been reached with 19 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

I love the feeling of going home knowing that something that I have been able to do has had a massive positive impact on the people living in our home.

The residents drive my passion. I have so much love for them, seeing them smile and enjoy living at the home and being able to support people who are on end of life care, knowing that you have provided exactly what they have needed in that time.

I often forget I’m at work because it feels like home. The people around are like family and I love them all dearly.
One day we will be old and I’d like to know that there is someone to fight for me the way I fight for them.
