I've found all the staff to be very caring thoughtful and respective. Despite being extremely busy to the point of taking ages to answer the phone, everyone makes you feel welcome, and no request is too much. Which is essential during these difficult times.

My sister has had extremely very good care but room furniture is very poor, I have remarked several times, curtains, chair fabrics require new ones. Clothes go missing even after putting names on, her general dressing still not sorted although this is difficult. Her showering and bathing more should be done.

We are very happy as a family of the care of my mother. The staff are excellent at communicating any changes in my mother's condition/treatment etc.

The care has been excellent for her stay. We have witnessed well thought out activities. The staff levels seem to be consistent and the familiar faces make a huge difference to the continuity of care which to me is very important.

I am very pleased with the care and I am grateful to all the staff as a team. At the moment I cannot visit because of the virus and I can only see my wife on the smartphone but she clearly is very well looked after and I know she is relaxed. As she has dementia she cannot relative very well to me, but does relate well to the team.

Woodend is in need of investment it is beginning to look tired. The staff is all friendly and very caring but more staff are required. Finally, the new management team appears to be getting in control of overall services. Prior to this, there had been a continual change in management and some nursing staff were having to take on admin activity.

This purpose-built residential care home is splendid in every way. All the management and staff are friendly, helpful and caring. Professional chefs produce restaurant-quality meals. In addition to this, all the floors have little kitchens where the staff are only too pleased to provide snacks and, if desired, a late breakfast for those wishing to have a little longer in bed in the mornings. The home has comfortable lounges with TV and music, not forgetting a magnificent display of tropical fish. There is also normally a full entertainment programme with games, painting, lectures and musicians. The home is immaculately clean. It boasts substantial and well-kept gardens maintained by professional staff. What more could one ask? Splendid.

I was very pleased with the treatment I received and can't wait to come again when this becomes necessary. I came in for respite when my carer went away on holiday. I'm very pleased I joined Woodend for my 3-week stay and my carer could go away happily knowing I would be enjoying myself and I can't wait for my next visit.

My father is well looked after and staff are very receptive to his needs. They look after him very well and he is happy at Woodend and enjoys a bit of banter with the staff. They provide excellent customer care and go out of their way to help my father. This applies to all the staff, no matter what job they do. I admire their patience and caring attitude. The building and gardens are very well looked after, clean and provide a pleasant ambience.

On visiting my mother in Woodend I was made most welcome, I had driven for 2 hours to visit her I was asked if I would like a cup of tea or coffee. I also asked could I order a lunch to have with my mother, I requested a sandwich it was brought to me at the same time my mother had her lunch. I found the staff very friendly and helpful. I spend 2 hours with my mother and each time I visit, I get the same response "well done to all staff".

The standard of care my father receives at Woodend Care Home is outstanding. The home has a welcoming atmosphere as soon as you walk into it. My father has been warmly welcomed into the home. He has been treated with the utmost dignity and respect and nothing is too much trouble for the staff to do for him. The staff have gone over and beyond to make him feel calm and settled. His face lights up when they talk to him. Their kindness and compassion has calmed the aggression that was apparent in his dementia. My father enjoys the varied activities that are provided and all the residents are made to feel part of whatever activity is going on. During the activities, I see him smile and interact with the staff. Thanks to the high standard of care he is receiving from Woodend Care Home, he has become more calm and peaceful.

My mother has been a resident at Woodend Care Home for the past 18months. My mother was admitted to Woodend Care Home having been hospitalised. She arrived in a very low state however immediately I saw signs of improvement/recovery. My mother could not be happier now. I put this down to the kindness, care and support provided by the care team. Thank you.

Jane Abdoh
Jane AbdohJob Title:Home ManagerJoined: 2022

I’m Jane, and I joined Woodend as Home Manager in June 2022.

I became a nurse because I wanted to look after people. I qualified in 1978 and have worked in the NHS and the private sector. I also worked overseas in Abu Dhabi for 10 years.

Throughout my career, I have always been passionate about the care of the elderly, which is the reason I joined the care sector 25 years ago. Care of the elderly is complex - some have many physical needs or may be living with dementia. The work is so rewarding, though, and residents have such wonderful tales to tell. Part of my role is also to support their loved ones, who also become part of our family.

Outside of work, I have three children and four grandchildren. Family is very important to me, and they all know how much I love my job. I have lots of interests, including gardening, reading, travel and going to the theatre.

Ruth
Ruth Job Title:Clinical Deputy ManagerJoined: 2023

I’m a Clinical Deputy Manager at Woodend, having joined as a Registered General Nurse, before advancing to Unit Manager. I qualified as a nurse in 2024 and previously worked with the NHS as an Endoscopy Nurse. My true passion lies in elderly care and in June 2024, I took on my current leadership role, bringing my expertise and dedication to the team.

Outside of work, I’m a proud mother to a wonderful daughter and I have a close-knit family, including four siblings and cherished nephews and nieces. In my spare time, I love traveling, watching sports —particularly football — and staying active through walking and yoga.

Mary Durkin
Mary DurkinJob Title:Financial AdministratorJoined: 2022

I was a catering manager in a 120-bedded home in Warrington but went back to college and received all my NVQ administration 1,2,3, and Management level 4.

I then worked at a care home as an administrator. After 12 months I was promoted to non-clinical Deputy Manager, which I did for two years. After some consideration in where my role was going, I decided to go back to a financial administrator role and applied to work at Woodend.

I am a very caring person and I love to be able to help others and see their reaction when I can do this.

Outside of work I am married with one son who is 24 and at university. I still love to cook and bake, which I do often and treat the staff here at Woodend. I like to swim and walk where and when I can. I always love to push myself and learn new things.

Jill Dobson
Jill DobsonJob Title:Activity CoordinatorJoined: 2022

I have spent many years in Health and Social Care, specialising in older people with dementia. I also taught adults and children with learning difficulties/disabilities/ complex health problems and mental health issues.

I love being able to make a difference to the lives of individuals and do my best to give them the best quality of life possible.

I live relatively near Woodend but have lived very close to it in the past and am very active in community work in the area. I enjoy walking , rambling and cycling, singing, cooking, embroidery - just not enough time for everything! I am also president of a local Rotary Club and undertake voluntary work with The Homeless and Older People. I also enjoy visiting places and going to the theatre.

Ashley Ratcliffe
Ashley RatcliffeJob Title:Chef ManagerJoined: 2007

I began my career at Woodend in 2007 as a Hotel Service Assistant, where I developed a strong foundation in hospitality. In 2012, I transitioned to the kitchen as a Kitchen Assistant and steadily progressed to the role of Cook. During this time, I pursued my NVQ qualifications to become a fully qualified chef. After completing my Level 3 NVQ in Senior Chef training in 2018, I was promoted to Chef Manager, a position I have held ever since, overseeing kitchen operations with dedication and expertise.

Outside of work, I maintain an active lifestyle by regularly attending the gym and running. I also enjoy hiking and have completed the UK’s Three Peaks—Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike, and Snowdonia—alongside colleagues from Woodend, fostering teamwork and camaraderie beyond the workplace.

Susan Berry
Susan BerryJob Title:Hotel Services ManagerJoined: 2011

I was self-employed for several years before moving to Spain in 2006. I returned to the UK in 2011 and joined Woodend.

I love the connection I have with the residents; they make me laugh, they make me cry, but I honestly could not think of a better work environment. I am a friendly person with a good sense of humour, and I feel the residents know this and they make coming to work a pleasure for me.

I live locally and I’m married with two children and six grandchildren. We have a caravan in Anglesey which we go to whenever we can, and we love going for lovely coastal walks. I also enjoy holidays abroad, especially Greece.
