From walking in the door I was made to feel really welcome, I knew after being shown around that this was the right home for our uncle. He settled really quickly and is really well cared for. He is treated with kindness, respect and total dignity which is so important. The staff are really lovely with him. His room is clean and he is very comfortable, the food looks amazing. He enjoys the activities and they even had him up dancing! He looks well and has been thriving since being in the home and is totally spoilt by the staff. I couldn't ask for anything more from a home and we would definitely recommend Woodend to anyone. Thank you to all the staff for making what I thought would be a very difficult transition, very easy.

From the minute you walk through the door you are welcomed by very friendly, helpful staff. My mum is treated with dignity and respect by all carers and staff. She has become more stimulated since her arrival due to activities and being with other people. Her room is very comfortable and always clean. All the staff are always smiling and make the residents feel respected. There is always an alternative to food if there is something else you prefer.

I had a total knee replacement on the 21st of May and wanted somewhere safe for post-op respite. I am in between homes and up to going for the op I was staying with friends. A friend suggested Woodend as a suitable place for respite and recovery. I will probably stay for 3 weeks until my flat is ready to move into. It is ideal. Very friendly, super helpful people and I feel very happy here. The nursing staff have been wonderful, as has everyone else.

The staff ar Woodend are kind, caring and thoughtful. I get such comfort knowing that my dad us well looked after. As a regular visitor, I regularly see the team with the residents and witness their hard work. They always go above and beyond. Everyone is wonderful here, the staff on the second floor are always so kind to everyone. But honestly, the whole team on the second floor (and probably throughout) regularly blow me away.

I chose Woodend Care Home for a convalescent stay following a hip replacement operation. I could not have wished for a more caring and professional environment.
My room was large, with lovely views, an ensuite, an accessible bathroom and a separate sitting area. The electric, adjustable bed made it easy for me to get in and out of bed. The residents' lounge and dining room were clean, comfortable and freshly decorated. The accessible residents' garden, even in January, had flowers and plants of interest. The food was carefully designed around the residents' wishes. As a purpose-built care home, the layout is well-suited for residents' needs.

However, the staff team is what makes Woodend so special. The staff treated residents with dignity, patience and kindness. They went out of their way to make me feel at home. Nothing was too much trouble for them. I would happily return to Woodend for convalescent care. I would also be confident in placing elderly relatives in Woodend.

Very accommodating and professional from the moment we contacted Bupa. The manager came to my dad's house to complete an assessment and then Dad went into respite. He has completed a number of weeks respite and then he has become a full-time resident. He is cared for in a clean environment and the food is outstanding. Carers listen to us as do all the admin staff and manager. He is cared for. He is safe.

The entire team at Woodend have been nothing short of incredible. Nothing is ever too much and they have gone above and beyond to support both me and my grandmother in what is the most difficult times.
A special mention to one member of staff in particular, without her kindness, patience, and support I'd have been lost.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart, from moving Nan in until now you've been amazing!

Since my mother became a resident at Woodend Care Home, the staff have worked very hard to cater for her individual needs. Initially, communication was poor. There are still issues, such as not being able to video call with Mum. Since a complaint was made communication is very good. Mum is well cared for and I am truly pleased with her placement, just a few tweaks then it will be excellent.

Jane Abdoh
Jane AbdohJob Title:Home ManagerJoined: 2022

I’m Jane, and I joined Woodend as Home Manager in June 2022.

I became a nurse because I wanted to look after people. I qualified in 1978 and have worked in the NHS and the private sector. I also worked overseas in Abu Dhabi for 10 years.

Throughout my career, I have always been passionate about the care of the elderly, which is the reason I joined the care sector 25 years ago. Care of the elderly is complex - some have many physical needs or may be living with dementia. The work is so rewarding, though, and residents have such wonderful tales to tell. Part of my role is also to support their loved ones, who also become part of our family.

Outside of work, I have three children and four grandchildren. Family is very important to me, and they all know how much I love my job. I have lots of interests, including gardening, reading, travel and going to the theatre.

Ruth
Ruth Job Title:Clinical Deputy ManagerJoined: 2023

I’m a Clinical Deputy Manager at Woodend, having joined as a Registered General Nurse, before advancing to Unit Manager. I qualified as a nurse in 2024 and previously worked with the NHS as an Endoscopy Nurse. My true passion lies in elderly care and in June 2024, I took on my current leadership role, bringing my expertise and dedication to the team.

Outside of work, I’m a proud mother to a wonderful daughter and I have a close-knit family, including four siblings and cherished nephews and nieces. In my spare time, I love traveling, watching sports —particularly football — and staying active through walking and yoga.

Mary Durkin
Mary DurkinJob Title:Financial AdministratorJoined: 2022

I was a catering manager in a 120-bedded home in Warrington but went back to college and received all my NVQ administration 1,2,3, and Management level 4.

I then worked at a care home as an administrator. After 12 months I was promoted to non-clinical Deputy Manager, which I did for two years. After some consideration in where my role was going, I decided to go back to a financial administrator role and applied to work at Woodend.

I am a very caring person and I love to be able to help others and see their reaction when I can do this.

Outside of work I am married with one son who is 24 and at university. I still love to cook and bake, which I do often and treat the staff here at Woodend. I like to swim and walk where and when I can. I always love to push myself and learn new things.

Jill Dobson
Jill DobsonJob Title:Activity CoordinatorJoined: 2022

I have spent many years in Health and Social Care, specialising in older people with dementia. I also taught adults and children with learning difficulties/disabilities/ complex health problems and mental health issues.

I love being able to make a difference to the lives of individuals and do my best to give them the best quality of life possible.

I live relatively near Woodend but have lived very close to it in the past and am very active in community work in the area. I enjoy walking , rambling and cycling, singing, cooking, embroidery - just not enough time for everything! I am also president of a local Rotary Club and undertake voluntary work with The Homeless and Older People. I also enjoy visiting places and going to the theatre.

Ashley Ratcliffe
Ashley RatcliffeJob Title:Chef ManagerJoined: 2007

I began my career at Woodend in 2007 as a Hotel Service Assistant, where I developed a strong foundation in hospitality. In 2012, I transitioned to the kitchen as a Kitchen Assistant and steadily progressed to the role of Cook. During this time, I pursued my NVQ qualifications to become a fully qualified chef. After completing my Level 3 NVQ in Senior Chef training in 2018, I was promoted to Chef Manager, a position I have held ever since, overseeing kitchen operations with dedication and expertise.

Outside of work, I maintain an active lifestyle by regularly attending the gym and running. I also enjoy hiking and have completed the UK’s Three Peaks—Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike, and Snowdonia—alongside colleagues from Woodend, fostering teamwork and camaraderie beyond the workplace.

Susan Berry
Susan BerryJob Title:Hotel Services ManagerJoined: 2011

I was self-employed for several years before moving to Spain in 2006. I returned to the UK in 2011 and joined Woodend.

I love the connection I have with the residents; they make me laugh, they make me cry, but I honestly could not think of a better work environment. I am a friendly person with a good sense of humour, and I feel the residents know this and they make coming to work a pleasure for me.

I live locally and I’m married with two children and six grandchildren. We have a caravan in Anglesey which we go to whenever we can, and we love going for lovely coastal walks. I also enjoy holidays abroad, especially Greece.
