Before my Mum was moved to Bedford, she stayed inside all day, she didn't eat well, didn't sleep well, was reluctant to mix with other people and was becoming more and more agoraphobic and morbid. Since she moved to Bedford in January, she has really started to enjoy life a lot more. She has been out to dancing and singing events, Bolton aquarium and museum, attended parties and made new friends and is even going ten pin bowling next week! I am so thrilled with the love and care provided by the whole team at Bedford, especially the way the activities team are able to get my Mum involved. It must have taken an enormous effort to get my Mum to believe she can be happy again and I can really see that she enjoys every interaction with the carers, nurses and staffing team. She now eats like a horse, sleeps in a proper bed and she even thanked me on my last visit for "giving her, her life back!". Thank you to the Bedford team for caring and helping my Mum to 'be happy' again!

Wouldn't put my worst enemy in this care home, the lack of care and acknowledgement the staff give their patients is evil. My nan sat from 6am to 4:30 pm in her own filth and was only changed as I requested it. This was done on multiple occasions. 40 beds and 5 staff at best. Ridiculous. Luckily we moved my nan to a different care facility after 2 weeks. I would give this place 0 stars if I could.

Thank you for sharing your feedback. We are deeply sorry to hear about your experience and understand how distressing it must have been for you and your family. At the time of your nan's stay, our staffing levels were 6 staff to 30 residents (4 care staff, a nurse, and a nurse assistant) This ratio...

My mum went into care in October 2024 due to her Lewy bodies. She was initially assessed in a unit and then was moved to Astley House. Since being there, my sister and I are much happier. She is more settled and content. My dad came into Astley House in December 2024. We tried to keep him home but he wanted to be with mum. He is well cared for. The carers are kind and look after all residents with a passion for ensuring they are engaged in activities and happy.

My mum moved to Bedford Care Home in December following twelve months in another care home. We chose Bedford due to my mum's rapid declining health with dementia and Alzheimer's. The care home she originally went in did not meet her care needs, since moving to Bedford last month, I have noticed a massive change in her everyday life.
She has now settled in relatively well, has a lovely room which we have been able to make a "home". The staff from senior management, carers, domestics and activity workers are brilliant.
They are very knowledgeable when dealing with advanced dementia and very caring.
This for us, as a family, has been the best and right decision for my lovely mum.

I used to dread visiting her in her other care home as both she and myself would be quite stressed and get upset, now, thanks to Bedford, I do not have the same worries and anxiety, this is due to them actually caring for my mum like one of their own.

My dad was a resident on Lilford Unit for over three years and latterly, on Pennington where Dad passed away. The care my dad received was given with love, patience and kindness during this time by all staff. During end of life, the care team attended to Dad, making sure he was clean and comfortable. Both day and night staff treated Dad with kindness and respect while he was unconscious and everyone supported me throughout the time there, giving me emotional support and care. What I can take away from my experience is that everyone knocked on the door before entering Dad's room, his personal care was attended to every 2 hours, both day and night. I was given plenty of food and drinks while I stayed with Dad and received lots of emotional support. Care staff from other units who knew Dad visited to see how he was doing and when he passed gave me their condolences.

I never wanted Dad to go to hospital but stay at the care home to die as he was cared for so well by brilliant and caring people.

Mum is happy and settled on the unit. The team care for her with dignity and respect, supporting her as required.
Relatives are kept informed regularly of a service user's progress, changes in health needs, including liaising with the multi-disciplinary team. Team members genuinely care about the residents and can often be seen chatting to them.
Regular meetings are held where plans for the home are shared and questions answered.
The staff are always happy to answer questions regarding your relative.
Senior members of staff are also willing and do support the staff, relatives and service users.
The well-being team provide daily activities and trips out. They provide innovative ways to engage residents' participation.
Care plans are regularly updated, providing high-quality individualised care according to a resident's needs.
Residents are encouraged to make decisions for themselves.
Mum's room recently was redecorated and new furniture.
All in all, a great unit.
My mum's health had deteriorated in the last few months prior to progressing to Mum requiring end-of-life care.
Additional equipment was obtained to meet her needs.
Staff, including senior staff were very supportive both to my mum and myself.
Mum deteriorated very quickly one night and the staff who were on duty had known Mum since her admission and were amazing. They stayed with her until I could get there and were so supportive.
The next morning, the undertaker came for Mum and many of the staff came to pay their respect.
On the day of the funeral, as we prepared to leave Bedford Care Home, many of the staff came to offer sincere condolences and pay their respects as they said goodbye to Mum.
Some of the team came to the funeral.

On behalf of the family, I just want to say a huge thank you for everything they've done for Mum and the family.

My father-in-law has been in Bedford Care Home on Astley House for around 18 months. I visit very often and it is always a pleasant visit. Staff make me feel so welcome, my father-in-law is so looked after and he feels like he is part of their family in the home. It makes us as a family so relaxed knowing all the staff are so caring and happy in their jobs. They all work so hard.

Worst time having to leave my husband here. The hospital contacted them to transfer my husband 11th May. On arrival no staff knew he was being admitted. We waited, staff simply cleared a previous client's room, no cleaning involved, broken bed, dirty throw, he never in all the 3 weeks had his name on door. He constantly had infections, he couldn't take his medication. I told them he had difficulty swallowing, I was ignored. He couldn't get out of bed, they left his food so far away he couldn't reach. I also told them he needed help eating. He had 21 meal replacement drinks and when he left he still had 12, should have 3 daily. He was at the end of the corridor alone, and on many occasions whilst I was there they forgot to bring his lunch. I had to find staff, they replied "oh he's out of our sight and we do forget him". The final straw, I told them he was unwell, to call a GP, he prescribed meds and it arrived 5 days later. He went back to the hospital on 29th May with an infection. Sadly he passed.

My mum has mixed dementia and we were worried about how she would settle. From day one, in January this year, her physical health has improved due to her nursing care and she is so happy and settled due to the appropriate activities provided and great trips out, as well as the care she receives which is excellent. I am from a social work background and would be very happy to recommend to families.

I've been here since August and so far my stay has been wonderful. The staff are kind and management have been so helpful. But also respectful of my need for independence. Its reassuring to know I have the support if I need it. I can't speak highly enough of everybody there. I'm in a wheelchair and I got to go on a barge trip the other week and it felt so nice to do something that I didn't think I could do. The care I've received has been second to none!!

When my mum was taken to Bedford Care Home, I was very wary after extremely bad experience at another place.
She was completely incapable of doing anything herself but with the amazing care, help and encouragement from all staff on Pennington she is now up walking and sometimes dancing!
The different activities are well organised, in the home or out on day trips. It's great to see the photos of her enjoying herself and I know she's safe.
I'm always contacted if there are any illnesses or concerns, this is massively appreciated.

I can definitely recommend.

My grandad has been in Bedford Care Home since December last year 2023. The staff are lovely with both my grandad and our family. He is well looked after. They go on day trips out for different things like ten-pin bowling and barge trips. They also do various activities within the home itself and update photos regularly which is lovely to see and keep updated with what my grandad is doing. They also invoke my grandma, his wife, on activities too, both in and out of the home. He always looks so happy in the photos and when my grandma visits, she says how happy he is.

My husband was admitted Tuesday 03/09/2024. All seemed well, was assured mat on the floor in the room would be down for alarm and sensor too. But 11.45 pm, I get a phone call Wednesday evening, my husband had a fall and ambulance called. I was frantic ringing the home but never an answer. Had to ring my husband's mobile, he said he was freezing on the floor, no proper blankets, had to chase the ambulance up (me) and they then gave me an update, this is disgusting and should not have happened.

My grandma moved into care about a year and a half ago and transitioned to Bedford in April this year. She's now in a nursing dementia unit where she's receiving excellent care. She's settled in wonderfully, enjoying her meals, participating in the activities offered, and joining in the communal events and parties. She interacts really well with the carers and nurses. Moving her to Bedford was the best decision we could have made for her health and well-being, as well as for our family.

It is a lovely place and she really likes living there. As in all places, things happen but they are cleared up fast, the gardens are huge but could do with some attention as they sometimes make the home unkept.

Her care needs are looked after quite well, even though I'm a perfectionist when it comes to my sister's care. I have done this job and totally understand that not everything can run to plan.

Joanne FishwickJob Title:Home Manager

I started at Bedford Care Home as a Care assistant in 2005. I loved working here at the Nursing Dementia house I was at then, Since this I have progressed in my career through various roles at Bedford. I have been a Nursing Assistant, Unit Manager, Head of Care and Deputy Manager and I am very proud to now be the registered Manager.

I have always had a passion for Caring since leaving school and the Dream was to become a Nurse, But I took a different route as I had children early on.

My Goal is to make Bedford have a warm and welcoming feel to ensure residents/families, staff and visitors all feel at home. Everyone at Bedford is like Family.
