  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.4 out of 5 from 11 positive Reviews in the last 12 months.

Detailed Breakdown

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating of all Reviews over all time. For each review the Care Home / service is rated Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Poor or Very Poor on a number of areas eg Staff, Management etc. The Care Home receives points for each rating as follows: Excellent = 5. Good = 4. Satisfactory = 3. Poor = 2. Very Poor = 1. These points are added up and then divided by the total number of completed ratings to generate the average rating.

    The Average Rating of 4.335 for Birch Court Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (84 Excellents x 5) + (56 Goods x 4) + (20 Satisfactorys x 3) + (3 Poors x 2) + (1 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 164 Ratings = 4.335

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 12 months. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with 'Extremely Likely' or 'Likely' in answer to the question 'How likely are you to recommend this Care Home to friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment?'

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 5 Positive Reviews, 3 points for the first Positive Review and then 0.25 Points for each of the next 4 Positive Reviews.

    2. 1 point is available for reaching a target number of Positive Reviews based on 20% of the number of registered maximum number of service users. If the target is partially reached then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home with 50 registered maximum number of service users has a target of 10 Positive Reviews, if it has 10 or more Positive Reviews it will receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews will receive 0.7 points.

    3. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. The calculation is the same as above, except the points are divided by 2.

The 4.367 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Birch Court Care Home is based on 11 positive Reviews in the last 12 months and is calculated as follows:

    1. 3 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 = 4

    2. Target of 30 positive Reviews (150 registered maximum number of service users ÷ 5). 11 Reviews ÷ 30 Target = 0.367

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

My father was a resident for the last three years and my mother for one year (2015) Both were cared for in Fern Unit. The care they both received was outstanding. The kindness and care shown were wonderful to see. The staff are hardworking, patient and genuinely caring, treating residents like one of their own. I highly recommend Fern Unit nursing and care staff.

The best thing about my dear wife being a resident at Birch Court is the knowledge that she is being looked after by staff who really care. She is warm and safe and being treated with warmth and consideration. The lounge and dining areas have been refurbished, new carpet and curtains have refreshed the public areas. The bathrooms do need updating somewhat and I do think adding extractor fans would be a great idea. The little kitchen needs a complete revamp. The staff work hard to make a home for the residents.

We are aware some refurbishment has taken place within the care home and we are looking forward to seeing the outcome. Again thank you for your time taken to review us and your feedback is greatly appreciated.

They do such a wonderful job. Always a happy atmosphere. Very difficult job looking after so many people with complicated needs. Thank you.

Have been visiting my Aunt in Birch Court for the last two and a half years. The staff have always been helpful and I have had no problems with my visits. We celebrated her ninetieth birthday last year and they helped distribute the cake and with all the celebrations although unfortunately, she would not remember what happened.

My mother has lived at Birch Court for approximately 3 years, I have found the staff very friendly, caring and helpful in dealing with the challenging care of the Dementia and Alzheimer's residents. They carry out all their duties with good humour and care. The food, although adequate, is sometimes a bit soggy and unappealing. Other than this, I cannot find anything to complain about.

Clare Sheehan, Care Advisor at Birch Court Care Home responded to this review on 22 Feb 2018:

Thank you for your review; we were happy to read that you found the staff very friendly, caring and helpful and you feel that they carry out all their duties with good humour and care. We value all feedback as this allows us to improve our service where required. We were sorry however to hear that at times you have found the food unappealing, the chef will continue to monitor meals as they are delivered to each unit. Please do not hesitate to liaise with management at the home, we are always happy to assist with any issues you may have.

I feel that the care home is lacking in staff. Also, breaks should be split so there are at least two carers in the lounge at one time.
Also, this is a very vulnerable unit and should have more carers on Waterside House.
No security at all - my grandson had his motorcycle taken in broad daylight. Security must be a priority for all!

Clare Sheehan, Care Advisor at Birch Court Care Home responded to this review on 21 Feb 2018:

Thank you for your review; we value all feedback as this allows us to improve our service where required. We were sorry to hear of the theft of a family member’s motorcycle, however, unfortunately, as with most car parks, vehicles are left at the owner's risk. Our home is staffed according to Residents needs and staffing levels are regularly reviewed. Waterside is staffed with 2 nurses, 4 carers and a hostess and staff breaks are split, with 2 out of 7 staff taking breaks at one time. Please don’t hesitate to liaise with management at the home, we are always happy to assist with any issues you may have.

My mum went into the Waterside Unit in Birch Court in August 2015 when she was in a bad way, since then she has come on fantastically. She now eats on her own and has calmed down a lot. She interacts with the staff and other residents alike. She has put on nearly 2 stone in weight which was needed, she was skin and bones because she refusing to eat. The staff are wonderful, patient and kind, so I would strongly recommend the Waterside Unit. Thank you so much from myself and the rest if my mum's family.

I would like to pass on my sincere thanks to the carers, nurses and managers of the residents in Fern House, who recently looked after our Dad during a two month stay. There was always a friendly atmosphere and myself and my family were made to feel very welcome when visiting. Thank you for looking after him so well. If the need ever arose again, I would be confident of his care in your hands.
