We are very grateful for the care our father received at Birch Court during the last months of his life. The staff were kind, compassionate and caring. We were able to stay very involved in my father's life and appreciated the conscientiousness way all things relating to my dad were reported to us. Thank you.

My dad was well looked after. The staff were kind (it seemed like the staff have a vocation to work there - it wasn't just a job). What impressed us was how swift the staff were to recognise health issues that needed hospitalisation. This happened twice.

We were welcomed as family and felt very at home visiting dad.

My husband has been in the home now for 9 months and his care has been second to none. The carers and staff are excellent and have shown him respect and treated him with dignity. We are very satisfied with all aspects of my care and I have no complaints.

I was very impressed that the care home had arranged a visit from staff of the Safari park who came with some of their house friendly animals to entertain the residents. The whole unit was buzzing with lively talk and everyone was fascinated by the visitors. It was really great to see the residents so involved. Well done to Birch Court and to the Safari park for arranging such an informative, amusing and absorbing visit.

My mother moved into the Birch Court Nursing Home three years ago. She was in a pretty bad state, since then she has gained over 12kg. She has always presented a happy and calm face.
The staff are amazing. I have nothing but praise and commendation for their dedicated care of my mother and God forgive if I developed dementia, Birch Court would be at the top of the list for my eventual care needs.

Keep up the fantastic job you are all doing, you have become my friends.

Mum is comfortable and has settled into this home now.
Staff are friendly and seem to care about her. We were concerned that she had been unwell after staff let her have 5 blankets on during a heatwave and she over-heated. Someone should have taken them off her.

Facilities are basic, especially bedrooms.

Individual carers are kind and relate well to Mom. She is improving each time we visit. Food adequate but attention should be given to fluid intake.
Similarly, some aspects of personal care seem to be missed; teeth and nails rarely cleaned. No evidence of activities for residents.

Room clean and comfortable.

Find very good, apart from the laundry i.e. things are getting lost and she is wearing other people's stuff. Do not like that when she has got clothes and shoes of her own. Also, I do not like the clothes parties. We like to buy her clothes ourselves as we don't know what to buy her for birthdays and Christmas.

Overall, care is satisfactory. Although there was an incident on one occasion that I was really not happy about and reported the matter to the nurse in charge. It has not happened since.

Sometimes there are not enough staff on duty. Why?
There are no activities at all, nothing to stimulate the mind, just left in front of the TV mainly to fall asleep. Why?
There should be a separate family room for visitors, instead of sitting with other residents which can be distressful.
We have yet to meet with any management after 6 months. Why?

Staff are brilliant, could not be more pleased.

My mum likes privacy. The door to bedroom always locked. Mum often sits alone in corridors (if a chair is available). Old-time music being played in the lounge would be good. Often the TV os on with modern day music or sport. A table in mum's room for her to have her meals from would be appreciated. Last three visits I have had to cook for one. Clothing often missing. Mum's nails often unclean. The skin on feet very dry.

We have found the service to be excellent from the home, staff very supportive and helpful. Nurse in charge very helpful and listen well to what I recommend for my family.
They have encouraged independence and treated my family with dignity at all times.

The overall standard is excellent and the care worker with the activities lovers her post. You can see it in the way she supports the service user.

As a family, we find the staff in Fern House in Birch Court, to be most helpful and caring.
On the administrative side, we are disappointed with some of the nursing staff.

On two occasions, when routine hospital visits were needed, the paperwork passed to us for use by the hospital staff were returned to your staff but then on subsequent hospital visits, they could not find them.

My mother moved into Birch Court in July. I am very pleased with the level of care, the staff have not only cared for mum, they have welcomed the rest of the family and involved me from day 1. Mum appears to have settled in and seems very happy and content. I am sure this is due to the staff.

Overall happy with the level of care.
Sometimes feel mum left on her own too long as she is bed bound and seems at times upset and realises something is not right.

In an ideal world, it would be nice for someone sitting with her and holding her hand as reassurance. Realise the practicality of this may not be possible.

Katrine SimmJob Title:Nursing Home ManagerJoined: 2022

Hello, my name is Kat, and I am delighted to introduce myself as one of the Registered Home Managers at Florence Mill Care Home.

As a qualified nurse with many years of experience caring for others, it has always been at the heart of what I do. I feel incredibly proud to work in a home where kindness, dignity, and compassion are so highly valued. I have worked in the care sector for 8 years, supporting older people with a range of care needs, and throughout my career, I have always believed that every resident deserves to feel safe, respected, and truly at home.

For me, a care home is much more than a place to live — it should be a place where people feel comfortable, valued, and able to enjoy life in the way that matters most to them. I believe in taking the time to get to know each resident as an individual: learning about their interests, routines, preferences, and life stories so we can provide care that is personal and meaningful.

As Home Manager, my priority is to create a warm, welcoming environment where residents feel happy and supported, families feel reassured, and staff feel proud to provide the highest standard of care. I am passionate about building a strong sense of community and ensuring every person living here feels listened to and included.

Whether you are considering care for yourself or someone close to you, I understand that choosing a care home is an important decision. My team and I are here to answer any questions, offer support, and help make the process as comfortable as possible.

I look forward to welcoming you to Florence Mill and showing you everything our wonderful home has to offer.

Since moving to the UK, I have steadily progressed in the adult social care sector – working as a Registered Nurse, Unit Manager, Clinical Lead, and most recently stepping into the role of Home Manager at Florence Mill Care Home in March 2025. In these roles, I have gained extensive experience in care planning, team leadership, and quality improvement. My leadership journey reflects a strong commitment to person-centred care, staff development, and operational excellence.
