Old Gates is situated in the peaceful residential area of Feniscowles in Blackburn. It is a warm, welcoming purpose built care home with 90 beds, offering residential, nursing and nursing dementia care.

The home has a number of smaller, welcoming households with sitting rooms, space for Residents to pursue their hobbies and interests and lovely dining rooms.

The beautiful landscaped garden and patio is the perfect spot to spend time with friends and family, and is happily looked after by some of the home's Residents.

My auntie is happy with everything enjoys the food, loves to be social with every body is able to move around freely around the unit in her electric wheelchair. The unit is always very clean and smells lovely. The staff are friendly and no job is to small for them my auntie gets on well with everyone
and is always laughing and chatting with someone. Very happy with everything.

Old Gates is a very good place and they look after people very well. The activity lady took us out and we had indoor and outdoor games.

The experience has been excellent, due to being in hospital then transferred here to Holly House, through the staff and seniors' support and help. I have some more independence again and they helped me get back on my feet again healthwise. Staff really friendly and helpful. Staff really easy going and
no pressure, very patient. Going to really miss it here, going to be a wrench leaving as I have made a lot of friends with staff and service users.

I arrived, having gone through a horrendous period in my life I was met with a loving and caring set of staff. This has given me the confidence to move forward with hope for the future. This was reinforced with continued support, kindness and affection from management and staff. I was treated like royalty.

From the moment she arrived, the staff were so friendly and supportive both of Mum and family. Mum also seems happier and cleaner than the previous place, so very happy.

I feel safe living here, which to me, is very important. I'm being introduced to things and activities etc, that I would never normally do or consider, and find myself enjoying them and asking about the next event. Staff are really helping me to improve my confidence and get around inside and outside
of the home. I'm beginning to appreciate more the gardens here, and it's really starting to feel like home now.

All staff are brilliant, so kind and caring. Good with Mum and me. I like to treat them all now and then. Please just keep on doing what you're doing. Mum had a massive stroke and has been in Old Gates Care Home for five years through the care she is still with me. Thanks.

From the first day here I have been very happy with the management, carers, reception and the ladies in the kitchen. The food is good with lots of choices and all the carers are lovely with my husband. They will do anything he asks for with a smile. They have special mattresses for his comfort which
is good and he is comfortable being here and likes it very much. We are very lucky to have been able to be here as it was our first choice and everything has been great.

My nanna is in the Holly unit. She is now 99 years old and has always been very active apart from now she is bed bound. The carers and all staff at reception etc have gone above and beyond so my Nan can keep some dignity. Nan is at end of life - the carers have explained what is happening and answered
all questions appropriately. They are amazing humans - don't get enough recognition. Thank you to all involved.

Introducing Helen Holden Home Manager at Old Gates Care Home, Blackburn


Helen is an experienced home manager with over 25 years of experience in caring for the elderly. Helen has been the manager at Old Gates since 2019 and loves supporting and caring for residents in the home.


She uses her knowledge and experience to motivate her team to deliver care and support in a way that Residents gain the most benefit, in a warm and welcoming home.


She enjoys working with her colleagues and being a relaxed and proactive manager who motivates others to be the best they can be. She also has a special interest in caring for those living with dementia.


When asked what she enjoys most about her role, Helen said:


“The best part of my job is the variety and knowing I am making a difference in someone’s life.”


Helen has 4 children, 2 stepsons and 11 grandchildren and regards bringing up her family alongside her career as her biggest achievement!


Outside of work Helen enjoys getting out into the fresh air and likes to travel and explore new places.
