I cannot speak highly enough of the team and levels of care provided at Water Royd Nursing home. As soon as you walk in, you can feel the friendliness and warmth towards residents and their family members. In his final months of life dad was treated with care and respect and greatly enjoyed the outings,
activities and good food! Especially fish and chip Friday!!. Thank you for the wonderful care.

My husband has only been a resident at Water Royd for four weeks but already I know is in the right surrounding to meet his needs. He is treated with respect and his dignity is a priority that staff address. I cannot comment on the food as I have not sat with my husband at mealtimes, and neither can
I comment on the activities. However on my husband's first day in the home, we were were visited by three young girls who said they were known as the 'Pink Ladies'. They introduced themselves and said they were the Activities Or-Ordinator's and gave us an overview of what was being offered to residents. I am confident that I have no need to worry about my husband's care as I know he will continue to be looked after, and all his needs will be met whilst he a resident at Water Royd Care Home.
Reply from Catherine Smith, Home Manager at Water Royd House Nursing HomeThank you for sharing such thoughtful feedback. It's reassuring to hear how supported you've felt during these early weeks and how much care and dignity have been shown to your husband. Knowing that the team took time to welcome you both and explain what's available will mean a great deal to everyone involved in his care.

The home takes great care of my 95 year old mum. she is treated with lots of dignity by all the staff. Staff are regular so they get to build rapport with residents. This place is well run very clean and tasty and nutritious food with varied menus. Lots of activities and some trips out. Very secure.
Not cheap but worth it for the care provided great levels of communication with relatives.

Staff at Water Royd House could not have done anymore to look after my uncle. If they were concerned about anything they told me as soon as I entered the building. The food was excellent and very good quality. They kept the home extremely clean and looked after my uncles cleanliness with dignity and
care. They were especially fantastic with my aunt when she visited, she has dementia and they treat her with great affection and care as though she was a resident. Thank you all at Barnsley you could not have done any more.

After my mum having restbite in one care home then permanent in another we as a family felt totally let down. Mum moved into Water Royd in the middle of Nov 2025 the difference in my mum within days was astonishing she changed dramatically. She went back to her smiley happy self she made friends instantly.
Mum suffers from Alzheimers/dementia and we really thought she would struggle with the change but no the change was definitely for the better. The staff are amazing not just nurses and carers every single member of staff is approachable friendly and answer any queries we have. There are things to help keep stimulated which she needs as previously she was constantly bored. The entertainment provided is brilliant having singers twice weekly and a full activity calendar. We are so happy that there was a room available for mum at Water Royd

As a visiting professional to this care home for many years, I have always found the home so friendly and welcoming, both to myself and to the residents and their families.
The staff are always on hand when needed and they know each and every resident that lives there and makes time for them all. It
is clean and homely and the activities that are offered are brilliant. It is a fantastic care home.

After the scandal from the state of care homes pre-COVID covid I was very sceptical about my mum being taken out of hospital for end-of-life care. After first visiting Water Royd and subsequently having my mum placed there, my fears were completely dispelled. My mum got the care she deserved during
her short time she was there.

Our father was a resident from 19/03/25 to his death on 08/07/25. Throughout that time he received excellent care and was treated with warmth and understanding throughout. During our frequent visits we witnessed the care given to other residents and it was without exception always kind and caring. Thank
you to everyone for looking after him so well.

My husband was in a hospice 11 weeks. He has terminal stage 4 prostate cancer and parkinsons. I was asked to look for a nursing home. Water Royd House was the third one I looked at. My husband was only there for nine days. The nursing care was excellent. The support and care we received was special
from all the staff. We his family were there at the end of his life, most of the day. I thank you so much for all you did at this very sad time. Thank you.

My nanan became bed bound after contracting sepsis in December. Her memory started to fluctuate, and she became very confused. I went to Water Royd, hoping they could help stimulate her. The manager & staff greeted my nanan on arrival, and she was introduced to staff and those living there. The hairdresser
was there and offered to wash, cut & blowdry my nanan's hair. She then had lunch with everyone and said she wanted to go back very soon. Thank you everyone. This may become permanent in the near future.

For the first time in a long while, I can relax and feel confident that my husband is safe and well cared for. The staff are very friendly and obliging and make the place feel like a home from home. My husband is encouraged to participate in all activities, but never forced to do so. He is not a good
mixer and does need that extra encouragement. The standard of care is very good as is the cleanliness of the home in general. A welcoming atmosphere for everyone.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Water Royd House Nursing Home to anyone looking for a home which provides superb care for their relative, a home which has a permanent staff who are so personable and who work so effectively to ensure that each resident is cared for very well. My husband has been a resident
for over three years and I am satisfied that he is well looked after, kept clean and comfortable, provided with suitable entertainment and is as happy as he can be, given that he is now in the latter part of his life. This is a home which is well managed, which is full of caring people who do a superb caring job.

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.799)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.799) out of 10 for Water Royd House Nursing Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 23 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 23 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.799 for Water Royd House Nursing Home is calculated as follows: ( (226 Excellents x 5) + (41 Goods x 4) + (7 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 274 Ratings = 4.799
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Water Royd House Nursing Home is based on 23 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 62 registered maximum number of service users is 12.4, which has been reached with 23 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
