My father moved here in January 2020 and has always received the very best of care. I’ve found the home to be clean, friendly and welcoming. The nursing and care team treat Dad with dignity and respect, and the activities team engage, entertain and amuse him. Living here has given him his quality of
life back.
During the Covid-19 crisis, the manager and staff have worked tirelessly to keep residents safe and relatives informed. The activities co-ordinator has organised regular video calls with Dad, which have made lockdown so much more bearable for all of us. My family are extremely grateful, and we thank you all.

I want to thank the manager for guiding and helping me through what has been a very stressful period for my mum and myself. Mum has been in hospital for a week and needed care when she came out. The manager has been a huge support to me helping with the transition from hospital into a care home with
ease. My mum is at the start of her journey at Swallownest but I am very confident that after a few days she will settle and enjoy her time there. Because if the Covid situation I haven’t been able to look around myself but I’m confident that it will all be excellent. The few staff I have met and spoken to on the phone so far all seem very kind and caring. I have spoken to a few people who know of the home and all have spoken of the wonderful leadership that it has in the manager.

The home is by far one of the best, well-managed homes in the locality. Particularly since the arrival of Covid-19, they took the necessary precautions to protect my Nan and all the residents from the pandemic and managed the situation excellently. The staff as a whole are brilliant at their jobs and
are a credit to the home, we can’t thank them enough for keeping my Nan safe and well at this trying time

My mum-in-law has been here for 10 months and is very happy. We get regular pictures of her doing activities even whilst covid-19 lockdown is ongoing and we are kept informed by the manager regularly. The staff are lovely and treat residents with the respect they deserve, the meals are very good and
they get lots of little treats too. I would not hesitate to recommend Swallownest Care Home to anyone.

My 92-year-old mother-in-law went into the home in January. From the moment she arrived, she was included for lunch and cups of tea. The home is clean and welcoming with lovely furnishings and décor. The activities were varied and besides the many in-house activities included going to tea dances, coffee
mornings and even going to the pub. The home locked down on 13th March a good 10-days before the rest of the country. They have had no incidents of the virus and have been testing both residents and staff. Whenever we ring anyone at the home, they are really helpful and caring, and given how busy they must be, extend every courtesy and reassurance to us. The activities co-ordinator sends us regular photos of her, and most facilities are still in place, with carers doubling as hair-dressers, so the residents are still in a routine and being entertained by this lovely set of carers. We feel blessed that we chose this care-home, and can’t thank them enough for everything they do.

My mum has been in this care home for a few years now and is really happy here. She thinks of it as her home. She has a lovely ground floor room which allows her easy access in and out even at 99. The staff look after her very well, especially during this covid crisis. We have had regular updates and
video calls provided by her lovely carers. Many thanks from all the family.

I can only comment on the care that has been given to my mother, and I cannot fault anything about the care given.
Every member of staff has been excellent in the care that is given.

My mother has now been in Swallownest Care Home for over 18 months and absolutely loves it. She feels it is her own home, and is loved and cared for by everyone. The fact that she is so happy takes away the stress for her family. It is extremely clean, the meals are delicious and the entertainment is
brilliant. The 'workforce', whatever their status, are always cheerful and obliging. I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone there, especially at this moment in time, for keeping my mum safe, secure and happy. You are all doing a remarkable job and it is down to the dedication of everyone there that this is achieved. I cannot thank you enough.
Under normal circumstances, it's an absolute pleasure to visit, not only Mum but everyone there. So at the moment, with lockdown in place, thank you for the video calls you organise. We are looking forward to the time when we can see you all again.

My father was fortunate to obtain a room at this facility late in 2019 before the Coronavirus had impacted on the UK. My initial view of the home and the staff was that it was very family-focused and professionally managed. The whole home is clean and always fresh smelling. Having experienced several
other local care facilities with both my parents, I was able to rate Swallownest at the top of the league table from a position of experience.
My initial view was amplified significantly when the Coronavirus hit. The professional way the staff and management have performed during this time is exemplary. I would like to praise the staff in relation to how they have maintained contact between the residents and their family. During a very tough period for all involved, a weekly face to face video call with loved ones has been wonderful.
The personal commitment of the staff that facilitated this, is something we will not forget.
Thank you and God bless you all.

My 82-year-old mum had endured 4 weeks in hospital after being diagnosed as having had a heart attack.
She had recently been diagnosed with early-stage dementia.
Her decline over those 4 weeks was staggering and we were told after 3 weeks she had 3 months left.
My Dad couldn’t have coped with her
at home but given his age (82) we wanted to get her as close to his house as possible.
One of my work associates had only just been telling me that after looking all over S Yorks he had got his Mum into Swallownest as he felt it was the best in the area.
This home was 200 yards away from where Dad lived so ideal.
The Manager was superb as she visited my Mum in hospital and watched the (non) care she was getting and as my Mum could now barely move she got her into the home within 48 hours.
Unfortunately, my Mum was only there for 6 days but the manager and all the staff were brilliant and made those last few days 100% better for both my Mum and, just as importantly my Dad. Thank you.

My father was admitted to Swallownest after spending a month in a palliative care unit. My family and I were naturally anxious at him being moved from a medical environment, with doctors at hand, to a nursing home, where it would be a local GP service and community palliative team that would provide
his medical care. The balance between a hospital environment and a nursing home has its advantages and disadvantages and there were times when we were concerned at the staffing levels at Swallownest but this was not the fault of the staff/management at the home. The staff that cared for my dad were very kind and also took time to consider my family's stress at the situation we faced. My dad liked the staff very much which was a comfort to know. It was clear they cared. The carers work long shifts and were often run off their feet. I wish for their sake there were more staff. They were all lovely to my dad and I am grateful for their care to him. Moving him to the nursing home was the right decision.

I cannot rate this care home highly enough. My dad had a stroke in November 2018 and suffers with dementia. He was so independent prior to this stroke that the thought of him moving to a home filled me with dread. I needn't have worried. I visited a few times (unannounced) before he moved in and was
always happy with what I saw, there was a good feel about it. All the staff are brilliant, good at their job, genuinely supportive, caring and kind. Hugs and kisses are freely given! The staff morale is excellent, which clearly has a positive effect on the residents and their families too. I visit regularly and I witness the warmth and support that the staff provide. Varied activities take place often, and are well planned and great fun! I never imagined seeing Dad joining in with a singalong and yet he was smiling and singing his heart out. Food is excellent too. A huge, heartfelt thank you to all staff, they go that extra mile to make this place wonderful.

I have nothing but praise for all the staff at Swallownest Care Home. Nothing is ever too much trouble. Everyone is very kind and caring, not just towards my mum but towards me and my family. The place is very well run and very clean at all times.
It's so good to see mum with a smile on her face every
day when we visit. The nursing staff are always on hand when mum hs her epilepsy episodes/mini-strokes etc. They have taken a big weight off my shoulders. I feel 100% confident mum has the best care we could wish for.

I have been very pleased with the standard of care my Dad has received since moving into residential care here. The staff are very motivated and have built up an excellent relationship with my Dad and I feel that his needs are being met very well. There is always a nice, welcoming feel in the home with
frequent and varied activities and it is reassuring to see that staff turnover is very small so that all staff are familiar, which is a real bonus.
My Dad was in respite in another local care home, fortunately, we had the opportunity to move him into Swallownest. The difference in care is unbelievable. As a family, we are happy and can now relax knowing my Dad is in safe caring hands.
Thank you to everyone at Swallownest.

Swallownest Care Home take care of all the needs of the residents and treat them individually. They're always there to help whatever their needs and talk and treat residents with the respect they deserve.
The surroundings are very homely and they all have their own individual rooms which they can make
their own home from home.
They serve up a variety of lunches, teas, and breakfast, catering to all their individual tastes.

Mum is well cared for. I spoke to the nurse, who reassured me about Mum's crying outbursts and her ongoing health problems.
I observed staff speaking to Mum cheerfully and getting her out of crying spells, which she had quite a few of, on this visit.
The wellbeing coordinator was very helpful and
gave me more memory card games to do with Mum, which helps to focus her mind and memory, but also gives us a positive shared experience and aids us talking about things we remember from our past.

From day one, mum was made welcome and made to feel that it was her home. She was well cared for and treated her with respect and dignity. All staff work extremely hard and always say Hello. The care here compared to mum's old home was second to none. The home is clean and the food is good quality and
varied. The staff were there and supported our wishes. I can say the facilities in the home are great. Plenty of shows, events and external visits. The care coordinator likes to take the residents out and they have good links with the local community.
I have just been informed that the minibus has been removed. This will affect the residents' getting out to local events and the seaside. The transport was used every week, on numerous occasions. I do hope that HC One will see that this is a mistake and reinstate the much-needed bus.

Please pass on a big thank you to all of the staff for all their hard work in making the home feel a Home and not an institution.

Reply from Clare Sheehan, Careline Advisor at Swallownest Care HomeThank you for your review and for making us aware of your concerns regarding plans for the minibus. Our current minibuses are 7 years old and in need of replacement. We have reviewed options for replacement of the minibuses and explored the possibility of sharing them whilst ensuring we could meet the needs of our Residents during times when the minibus might be elsewhere. For most homes, the minibus is used just a few times a week whilst in others they are used more often, for a few hours each day. By using our buses in a different way, we want to ensure we do not compromise how we support our Residents, but also allow us to make better use of each bus. Some of our homes have already been operating a shared minibus approach over the last 2 years and we have found this works well in most locations, especially as it has allowed the homes to share drivers. The replacement bus will be used across 7 days and there will be an organised system of booking in advance to help support the homes the bus is allocated to. We are confident that once the new system is embedded Residents will continue to have good access to a minibus to take them out and about.

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.789)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.789) out of 10 for Swallownest Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 26 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 25 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.789 for Swallownest Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (249 Excellents x 5) + (46 Goods x 4) + (7 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 303 Ratings = 4.789
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Swallownest Care Home is based on 25 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 65 registered maximum number of service users is 13, which has been reached with 25 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
