I have always found everyone at the care home to be very friendly, always happy to speak and answer any questions. They all show a lot of interest in the residents and respectful to all. Our family are quite happy with the care he receives. Also, very grateful to everyone at this awful time. Take care;
I am still shielding until August.

My mum went into the home in May 2019 after breaking her hip initially for respite care. Despite her being 'difficult' in her early days there, the staff were always kind and patient with her. She is now a full-time resident after failing to get enough mobility back to return home (she is in her 80's).
She is settled, has a lovely room overlooking the parkland, is happy, mixes well and joins in the activities, albeit these have been curtailed due to Covid-19. It was a lovely gesture to have a drive-by both for the residents and relatives/friends, the joy on the residents faces expressed how happy they were. I cannot thank the staff enough for their commitment and care during this virus and also under 'normal' circumstances. Look forward to visiting once normal circumstances resume.
Reply from Olivia Shields, Marketing Assistant at Hesslewood House Care HomeThank you, Elizabeth, for letting us know how we are doing at Hesslewood House Care Home. My Dad has the early onset of dementia so at times, with his confusion, he has become stressed and wanting to come "home". He seems more settled now and has accepted where he now lives and I can honestly say he is quite happy there. The staff are kind and have a good banter with Dad which is what he
loves, he loves being cheeky and having a laugh with them. He likes helping out and the staff encourage this where safely possible. As a family, we do believe the staff try hard with Dad, especially around his personal hygiene. As a carer myself having worked in care homes I know from a personal level how difficult it can be to try to persuade a resident to have a regular shower. Perhaps a little more encouragement would be great from the staff, I know it's hard when dad may say no but with a bit of cheeky banter and time, I'm sure he would give in. I appreciate every effort made and other than that I feel dad is in the best place with caring staff that try hard in all they do.

I am really grateful for the care that my husband is getting. I have always found the staff helpful, professional and willing to make every effort to make him comfortable. Although I haven’t been able to visit recently because of the restrictions, I have been able to talk to him on FaceTime, and this
has been because there has been someone able to help and make sure the phone is available. I was very impressed also with the way a Drive-through was organised, so we were able to visit our relatives outside at a safe distance.

My mum has been in the home since September; it took her quite a while to settle and then came lockdown.
I have to say I think the staff have gone above and beyond the call of duty, level of care is excellent obviously during the lockdown period activities and entertainment are severely curtailed so
boredom does set in with the residents quickly, the isolation for the residence is kept to a minimum by the staff by doing drive-by viewings etc.
From my family's point of view, our mum has been in the home in her early stages of dementia has been a godsend for us all from a care point of view, and may I take this opportunity to convert our deepest gratitude to each and every member of the staff, thank you.

They have been looking after my Daughter who has Huntington's disease for over 5 years now and nothing is too much trouble for them. She can be very difficult to look after at times and they never complain. Her best interests are always put first.
They treat her like family and my daughter has almost
from day one called it her home.
They are a wonderful group of very caring people and to the staff, I would like to say a very big thank you for the care you give to her.

My mum was a resident for over a year. She gradually went downhill to be bed bound and paralysed down one side.
In her final days of life, I sat by her bed 10 hours a day for 5 days. The staff were very sensitive to my emotions.
The staff were caring, attentive and took care of me as well as Mum.
I cannot thank them enough!
Her room was cleaned daily and she was clean, warm and dry.
Reply from Ronnie Cavanagh, Marketing at Hesslewood House Care HomeThank you Lynn for your kind comments about our Care team. We appreciate you taking the time to leave feedback for Hesslewood House Care Home. We understand how upsetting it must have been, and are so pleased you felt that our team lived up to expectation and treated your Mum with dignity and the compassion she deserved during her time at our home. We hope that her time at Hesslewood House did see some friendships flourish with both the Care team and residents. Thank you again Lynn, if there is anything more we can do please do not hesitate to reach out.

I love the site and grounds of Hesslewood House and my husband's room is situated well to appreciate that. I find this form very hard to complete as individuals vary so much and one day can be happy and the next not so much, all due to staffing on the day. I am often quoted by some members of staff
as having "duty of care" but sometimes feel care is not just "duty" at heart. I was undecided about cleanliness, as the bathroom could be much improved. The security is poor now that there are residents wandering in and out of the rooms and many items going missing, so doesn't feel "our room" anymore. The manager is always ready to listen to problems.

Good. My mother would recommend the home to anybody. Most of the staff are good with a couple of exceptions.

Once I was waiting 15 minutes before the front door was attended to. This needs looking at. However, everything else is satisfactory.

The staff are very pleasant and welcoming to me. They treat my wife very well and with dignity. They are very familiar with her needs as well as her liking for singing. The place is clean and tidy with pleasant grounds where I can take her out for a short walk in her wheelchair. I am very happy with
the level of care she receives.

I am an ex-resident and a regular visitor.
I really appreciate how well I was looked after as a resident.
Through the eyes of a visitor, I see the empathy and endearment shown by the staff.
It is said that laughter is the best medicine and to experience this with the residents is so uplifting - it's
touching.
Singalongs are so rewarding, I consider myself so lucky to be a part of it.

On the whole, the staff are very caring but my complaint is about the lack of response to a resident when using the buzzer to call for help, particularly if the person is totally reliant on that service is unable to be independent. The response takes far too long, witnessing anywhere from 20 to 60 minutes.
Clearly, the reason being for this issue is a lack of staffing; the staff themselves are very willing and able but the main issue is the repeated time anyone responds to a buzzer. Within the time it takes for someone to respond, anything could have happened. The worst incidence happened on the 1/4/17 when my relation was still in bed at 10.25am, not up, washed, dressed, no breakfast, no drink; this is unacceptable, does not reflect good practice and contravenes the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2014: Regulation 10 - Dignity and Respect. I fear for others who may have suffered the same treatment and those to come in the future.

My father was in for Respite care for 2 weeks. Although he had a very nice room, we were disappointed that there were no activities taking place at all. He was in the Dementia Unit and although has memory problems and mild dementia, he had no-one to have a conversation with other than the staff. He
was offered to sit in the day room and watch TV but he preferred to watch his own in his own room. Apart from meal times, he spent all the time on his own in his room with his TV. He had been told he would be in the care home side but there were no beds available. The idea was to see how he settled with the idea he may soon need permanent care, but he is adamant he does not want to return.

My wife was using the commode and the carer came into the room with her breakfast, she gave the food to my wife while she was still on the commode. Food was nearly always cold. Pressing the call button nearly always resulted in a long wait (shortage of staff).

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.835)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.835) out of 10 for Hesslewood House Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 17 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.9 out of 5 from 17 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.910 for Hesslewood House Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (185 Excellents x 5) + (14 Goods x 4) + (2 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 201 Ratings = 4.91
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.925 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Hesslewood House Care Home is based on 17 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.925
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 66 registered maximum number of service users is 13.2, which has been reached with 17 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
