Southlands offers both residential and nursing care including support for those living with Parkinson’s. The home also offers short stays for recovery and respite, tailored to suit the individual, as well as a day care service available to the local community which includes meals and activities for the day.

Southlands dates from 1870 and was formally one of Harrogate’s premier hotels. It still has much of its charm and combines homely qualities with modern care technology. Occupants enjoy having their own ballroom and traditional bar, as well as ensuite rooms.

You’ll find Southlands in the popular spa town of Harrogate, surrounded by winning landscaped gardens and close to the local shops, with the train station only a short 10-minute walk away.

Yorkshire traditions are embraced in the food menu, which includes homemade cakes and speciality teas and coffees. The chef takes a personal approach to diet, and meals are catered to individual tastes. There are always cold snacks and alternatives available throughout the day.

There’s a real sense of community at the home. The staff work to discover what residents enjoy doing and the home's social calendar is organised around those interests. Visiting musicians and choirs are examples of some of the activities residents can experience, alongside arts and crafts, sherry mornings, croquet and themed events such as ‘messy play’ with the local nursery, coffee morning or lunch clubs.

My mother went to Southlands for respite care after a bad fall and head injury. Southlands had been recommended to me by a care professional. From my first visit to look around the team were lovely and found my mother a room at very short notice.
My mother was able to recover in very pleasant surroundings
with excellent support and kindness from the nurses, carers, housekeeping staff and the management team. She was able to return home after recovering and we are very grateful to all at Southlands who helped us.

So, Mum was in Southlands from 2019 till her recent death, we had the struggle of her settling, Covid, you name it. But, myself and my brother can not praise Southlands staff enough, every one of them. It's been a hard 4 years, but the care and love shown to Mum was above and beyond, the communication
between them and family was perfect.
When we called to collect Mum's belongings, I was met with hugs and tears. It's not just their job, they are truly invested. Thank you Southlands, all the nurses, all the carers. Thank you.

The Southlands team did a super job looking after my mother. She needed a period of recuperation when she arrived and the care she received made a huge difference and she recovered well. Both the carers and the nursing team were very good - supportive and understanding of needs, friendly and hard-working.

My father has been a resident for six years. He uses a wheelchair but can walk a little way with an aid. He has a lovely airy room and his own wet room. The staff all know him well and let him do his own thing when he wants to, and also get him involved in activities I never expected him to enjoy. There
are good food choices each day, and residents can make special requests. It's his home, and we know he is safe and cared for. Southlands has a lovely garden at the rear, which is a real suntrap in the summer. My father was an avid gardener and likes to get outside daily in good weather, which the garden allows. The staff know the regular visitors by name and keeps the families updated with newsletters and meetings. There is a variety of activities each day that residents can take part in, and it is a community.

Despite constant staffing issues and the need to protect residents and staff, Southlands put on an excellent Christmas programme for residents to include family and friends.
I am always impressed by their willingness to go the extra mile. Particularly impressive is the selection of food and the ability
to ask for any specific meal, within reason.

We had to find somewhere for my mum to live in a hurry after she had a fall. We feel very lucky to have found Southlands. We can't thank all the staff enough for the way they look after my mum. Cleaners, kitchen staff, carers, nursing staff and office staff have all been brilliant with Mum and with
us, her family; there is genuine warmth and care in their approach to her.
It has taken a while for her to get used to being in care, but from the start, the staff developed a good knowledge of Mum; she has gotten used to them and has made friends, which means she is more likely to have meals and participate in activities with other residents. The staff were very patient with Mum.
When we visit Mum, the staff will immediately say whether Mum is downstairs or still in her room.
It is great to know she is safe and well cared for.

The home continues to look after my mum well, and her standard of care is very good.
The staff really care about her and are attuned to her moods.
Her room is always very clean, and her clothes are laundered and ironed to a very high standard.
All of the staff are very pleasant when I visit, and
nothing is too much trouble for them.
On occasion, her meals have not been great, and she has struggled to eat them - sometimes she has very large portions that she cannot manage, and a great deal of food can be wasted - Mum needs assistance with her meals and, sometimes they look unappetising - Mum does enjoy the custard on the hot puddings though! I appreciate that it is a tremendous task providing food for so many residents with differing needs though.

Southlands Care Home is a lovely place. It has beautiful gardens, and the building itself is a lovely, clean, large place. Very friendly staff who genuinely care for my gran and do a great job of looking after her. I recently took part in their Christmas Market, in which the staff were very supportive
with and accommodating with. There are lots of social events that keep the residents entertained.

I was pleased and touched by the way Southlands staff helped celebrate my mother's 100th birthday. They were lovely, making a fuss of her and organising cards from local residents, many with lovely messages for Mum. Arranging a visit from the mayor, making it more of an occasion. The staff are amazing
at dealing with many residents, but with care and empathy; it is quite humbling to witness.

Mum moved here from a different nursing home in April this year. She is partially sighted, has restricted movement and is very sound of mind.
Southlands has a lovely feel about it from the minute you walk through the door. All the staff are warm, friendly and very welcoming. The food is excellent,
with several choices being given every day. A sherry or liqueur is offered as is a glass of wine at lunch if desired. Nothing is any trouble. Activities are varied and are on through the week. Mum is treated with respect and dignity at all times.
I would highly recommend Southlands. It’s a great relief for us all, knowing she is settled, safe and happier than she has been for a while.

My father used Southlands for respite care. My parents were nervous about my father going in. Staff were very helpful on arrival. Caring and professional. Southlands Covid's secure measures were robust. Facilities were excellent. Room was spacious, had an ensuite bathroom/shower, and room was equipped
to suit my father's needs. He was very well looked after during his stay. Visiting was possible. My father enjoyed his meals, especially the breakfast! We will need more respite care in the future, and my father will be residing at Southlands again soon.

Mum spent three wonderful years at Southlands after Dad passed. She began as a residential care person and became a nursing care resident during her stay.
Southlands became her home in a real and absolute sense of these words. Just excellent in every way from the “posh coffee and cake” at 3.00 to
the amazing activities offered daily. Her life began again as she made friends, eating in the luxury restaurant to spending time in the truly beautiful gardens.
But above all, this is the “heart” of Southlands that shines in each one of the staff that makes the team at Southlands. They care, they actually care and surrounded my beautiful mummy with love and care. I went daily, so I know I saw this in person at all times of the day. They never faltered, even during Covid, they did their absolute best for their residents to keep them safe and happy.
What more can I say; thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Lovely Christmas atmosphere at Southlands this week; several different Christmas themed things every day in December. Plenty to see and do for residents.
The staff have been lovely, making my mother comfortable after returning from hospital, so thank you. It is still very difficult at the moment with
the virus, but everyone works so hard to keep everyone safe.

I have found the care to be absolutely wonderful; the staff can't do enough for me. If I need anything, then nothing is too much trouble.
The entertainment staff are brilliant, they work very hard to make our days here enjoyable.
When I need to go to the hospital for appointments, transport is always
sorted out for me, which is important.
The food is great, and if there is nothing on the menu I fancy, the staff are always willing to provide an alternative.
In general, a first-rate place altogether

When we looked around Southlands, we knew immediately it would be the happiest home for Dad to spend his twilight years. Dad lived so happily and content there for 4-years and created wonderful relationships with all of the staff and residents. It was a very pleasant place to visit, and we enjoyed spending
time there as a family, also creating relationships with staff, residents and other visiting family members. Dad enjoyed all the activities in the home, especially the singers and joined in with the wonderful variety of activities that were provided. Because the building is so spacious, it feels like a hotel and there is plenty of room for everybody to relax and enjoy the surroundings, including the well-kept garden with an aviary full of brightly coloured budgies. Unfortunately, Dad passed away last year during Covid, and the staff made his final days so wonderful, allowing us into the home to be with him and say our goodbyes. We will never forget their kindness and compassion.

My last visit due to Covid was March 2020. The home was warm and inviting and we were greeted with the usual faces at reception. Regular activities are available for residents. Excellent meal choices available as well as regular coffees and gorgeous cake selections every afternoon. Surrounded by a beautiful
garden with plenty of seating to admire the views on a warm, sunny day.

The care my mother is receiving is excellent. The staff are attentive, responsive and go out of their way to assist with her needs. The care home is always very clean, it is welcoming, has lots of good space for residents to use and a great garden. The variety of activities and residents' programme

Susan Sowden

Job Title: Home Manager Joined: 2003

I have been the home manager at Southlands for 22 years and have worked in the care sector for approximately 40 years. I started my journey as a care assistant in a private care home whilst having a young family and I fell in love with all aspects of care and making a difference to so many lives.


I enjoy working in care services as I am very much a people person and enjoy engaging with staff, residents and families.


I am a Mother of 3 boys and have 8 grandchildren - family life is very important to me. In my spare time I love to go on holiday, especially Lanzarote, but I also really enjoy spending the weekend with family at my caravan in the dales.

Job Title: Clinical Deputy Manager Joined: 2010

I started working at Bupa as a care assistant in 2010 whilst I was doing my nursing qualification in the University of Northampton. When I qualified as a Nurse in 2013, I became staff nurse and then progressed to Unit Manager, and now I'm Clinical Deputy Manager.


I first acquired my qualification as a nurse in 2007 after finishing my Bachelor’s Degree in one of the Universities in the Philippines. I eventually worked in hospitals, then decided to come to the UK to explore other options - I've always had an interest in Geriatric Nursing, hence why I chose to work and progress in the care home sector. I enjoy working here as I like working within the Southlands team. Making a difference in someone else’s life is the most fulfilling feeling as a nurse.


I live local to the home, in Harrogate with my 7 year old daughter. In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my daughter doing gardening, crafts and watching movies. My family and I like to travel and explore different cultures and foods.

I have worked here for 5 and a half years. I come from a hotel background which links in very well with my role here at Southlands. I love working in care services as every day is different!


I live 5 minutes away from the home with my husband and our two boys. I am a keen gym goer and jogger, and enjoy walking my new puppy, Lily in my spare time.

I have been a Registered Nurse for 13 years, working mostly in hospitals. I moved to the UK 5 years ago and since then have worked here at Southlands care home.


I like working in care services as it makes me feel happy knowing I have assisted in helping people to improve their health and wellbeing.


I live locally, in Harrogate, and I'm married with one son who is 12 years old. In my spare time I enjoy long walks and days out with my family and friends.

I started my career as a care assistant in 2016, progressing to become a Senior Carer. After completing all my training and exams, I was then promoted to Registered Nurse. I love working in care services as the residents make my day - the connection I have with them is wonderful.


I am from Romania, where my family still live. My friends live in Harrogate, which is what brought me here originally. I love any kind of sport and socialising, so in my spare time you'll find me training or spending time with my friends.

I have one daughter, Alice, who currently lives in Australia, I live in a small village between Thirsk and Northallerton. In my spare time my garden keeps me well occupied but I do enjoy nights out with good quality food and fine wine.

I live locally to Southlands, in the middle of Harrogate. I am married with 2 boys. In my spare time I enjoy spending with with family, watching football & cricket, and I enjoy my holidays!
