Southlands offers both residential and nursing care including support for those living with Parkinson’s. The home also offers short stays for recovery and respite, tailored to suit the individual, as well as a day care service available to the local community which includes meals and activities for the day.

Southlands dates from 1870 and was formally one of Harrogate’s premier hotels. It still has much of its charm and combines homely qualities with modern care technology. Occupants enjoy having their own ballroom and traditional bar, as well as ensuite rooms.

You’ll find Southlands in the popular spa town of Harrogate, surrounded by winning landscaped gardens and close to the local shops, with the train station only a short 10-minute walk away.

Yorkshire traditions are embraced in the food menu, which includes homemade cakes and speciality teas and coffees. The chef takes a personal approach to diet, and meals are catered to individual tastes. There are always cold snacks and alternatives available throughout the day.

There’s a real sense of community at the home. The staff work to discover what residents enjoy doing and the home's social calendar is organised around those interests. Visiting musicians and choirs are examples of some of the activities residents can experience, alongside arts and crafts, sherry mornings, croquet and themed events such as ‘messy play’ with the local nursery, coffee morning or lunch clubs.

First time seeing Mum face to face since March 2020. She still seems happy in her own world. Have asked the staff countless times if they could cut Mums meals up, but still, she is struggling! Falls seem to be happening a lot more, but I'm kept informed and she seems non the worse. Staff all sounded
happy and as attentive as always. Plenty of activities going on, and Mum gets her hair cut this week! Overall pleased.

My dad spent four very happy years at Southlands, in fact, he really came out of his shell whilst living there and participated in activities he would never normally have done. This was down the all the encouragement and love from the staff. The staff are the most wonderful and caring people, who create
great relationships with the residents, which was extremely important to us. Their care and compassion during Dad's final weeks were outstanding; we all pulled together like one big family. I highly recommend Southlands to anybody who is considering care for their loved one.

Staff very helpful, constructive and have been supportive. My daughter has felt very safe there. We are still looking for alternative accommodation to suit her age group, but Southlands has been just so helpful. The work their care workers have put in during the pandemic is beyond belief. I do hope

All the staff at Southlands have welcomed Mum into her new home. They arranged visits to her window and now into her room. They have phoned with regular updates and always have time to chat about her day. At a very difficult time, with the help of a live video tour, I felt I got to see enough of the
home to make a decision for Mum. Mum is settled and happy receiving all the care that she needs.

At last, I can visit mum in her room at Southlands after not seeing her for a year properly. I visited her in the pod, which was brilliant and FaceTimed her.
It was a very emotional visit not only for mum and me but also seeing all the staff and carers. Mum looked so well, and as usual, dressed elegantly.
Very well organised to strict regulations, but I felt very welcome and happy to follow the regulations required. Extremely easy to book a visit.
I FaceTimed my brother while visiting Mum, so she loved chatting with her family. As I said goodbye, Mum turned to me and said, I have so enjoyed this morning.

My mum been at Southlands for just over 2-months and is very well cared for. All the staff who I have dealt with have been most helpful, courteous, very kind and understanding. Due to Covid restrictions, my first visit in person was only yesterday. I was very impressed with everything about the home.
It was very welcoming and well-staffed. Nothing was too much trouble for all the staff. A very nice carer spent the time introducing herself as one of the people looking after my mum. Despite the disabilities and physical ailments my mum has, she was far more content and happy that I have seen her for ages. She had been struggling with various carer visits in her own home and is now so much more happy now she has formed relationships with dedicated staff, knowing this is now her home.

My mother spent five very happy years at Southlands. All the staff from cleaners to the nursing staff were kind and loving. I visited on a weekly basis, always made welcome as were other relatives and friends. Southlands provided a lot of entertainment encouraged residents to take part. It is also lucky
to have a lovely garden, ideal for garden parties and fundraising events. 2020, a very difficult year, Southlands kept families well informed of changing circumstances. As the year progressed, Mums health was failing, and end of life was put into place during December. I was allowed to visit. Once again, I cannot praise the staff enough for their devotion and love they showed to Mum and me.

Nanna was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in late 2017 and came to Southlands in 2018. She has been superbly cared for, ten socialisation element is brilliant, as she is such a people person, the activities provided help to stimulate her mind; bingo, arts and crafts, chocolate tasting, indoor bowling, film
night, take away night; this was a very important consideration for our family given her gregarious personality and her diagnosis. The entertainment provided is also brilliant, ranging from singers and choirs coming in and putting on shows for the residents in the ballroom (nibbles and drinks are always served) to pantomimes as well as chair yoga, physiotherapy, therapeutic animals, church services, wine and cheese tasting (just to name a few). The staff are really what makes the place a ‘home’ for Nanna. Their patience, resilience and compassion are what we value most, not to mention they’re on-top fo the training game. Also, all the food is made from scratch, which is hard to come by!

Wonderful place and such a comfort to know my father is so well cared for. Staff are very supportive and understanding of the whole family, very attentive and spend time explaining all aspects of care and medication etc.
Feel very fortunate to have found such a caring and comfortable home. The building
lends itself well - spacious, airy and great communal spaces and garden.

This home has been a sanctuary of happiness and love for my father during this difficult time. The nurses and carers endless passion and dedication to looking after my father is a huge reassurance to me and my family. We know he’s being cared for extremely well, which is a huge relief.

The well-appointed public rooms and the available bedroom which is bright and airy made the very difficult decision to move mum from her home into a care home less difficult. We had looked at several Care Homes in the area and we knew immediately that mum would feel comfortable in Southlands. As time
went by we became aware of the lovely relationships being built between herself and her carers. She has been well looked after and is very happy. Of particular note have been the varied entertainment options available; something we really felt was important for mum. Covid-19 restrictions have proved a particularly difficult time with visiting in person curtailed. However, staff have been only too willing to chat about mum when I’ve called and assist with phone calls and video calls. The Resident Experience Manager has been invaluable during this time, organising video calls and ‘window visiting’, regular updates by mail, and forwarding messages to nursing staff via email.

We loved the genuine warmth of the staff we met on our initial visit, which along with the spacious, well-appointed resident’s lounges and dining rooms, comfortable bedrooms and beautiful garden made our decision easier in difficult circumstances. Valley Gardens and town take ten minutes or so on foot/wheelchair.
Southlands
became Dad’s home from September 2018 until he passed away in April 2020. The staff became Dads friends and the bonds he built with them were a joy to see. The care he received throughout his stay was good. The staff showed empathy, compassion, respected Dad’s dignity and shared Dad’s humour. Our daily visits found him clean, well dressed and comfortable, whilst his bedroom was clean and tidy. Dad loved his food there and ate with great relish! The afternoon teas and entertainment programme lifted spirits!
I could say so many more positive things but will end by saying a HUGE thank you. We will be forever grateful to each and every member of the Southlands Team.

My Dad has lived at Southlands for over 5 years and has enjoyed a very warm, caring, comfortable and homely environment. Every single member of staff in all roles are very professional, friendly and caring.
We know that Dad is well looked after and every member of staff consistently shows real interest,
affection, patience and good humour with all the residents.
It is also a pleasure for my family and I to visit Dad and spend time there - it is very evident that the residents are stimulated by a broad range of music, entertainment by a very talented team and a wide variety of guest speakers and performances.
Southlands is very spacious and residents can either sit in quiet areas inside, enjoy sitting/walking in the beautiful garden or take refreshments and 'watch the world go' by in the coffee lounge.
The resident's private room are excellent and the Dining Room food and service is of a high standard.
Highly recommended in every way ~ a huge thank you to a fabulous team!

My father-in-law was a resident for only a short time (10 weeks) but from the moment we had the initial consultation, to his sad death, the staff at the care home were excellent. We were fully informed on our initial interview with the Manager and kept appraised of progress and the state of his medical
needs throughout. The nursing and care staff were fabulous and were only too happy to help with any additional requests we had, or in obtaining specific favourite foods and drinks when he was reluctant to eat. Leaving someone you love in the care of others is always a difficult decision to make but our family were more than happy that Southlands took great care of him and had his best interests at heart throughout.

My dad has now been at Southlands for over 5 years. He is very happy here and is exceptionally well looked after by the staff. The facilities are excellent with spacious communal areas, and a choice of rooms to spend time in. The premises were recently completely refurbished and it is bright and airy
throughout. There is a large accessible garden, which is well looked after, and it regularly used by residents. The dining area is also bright and spacious, with good quality, varied food. Dad recently had a lovely 90th birthday party, which was organised by the staff. The staff really are wonderful - so friendly and caring. I live on the south coast, so keep in touch with Dad directly with a phone in his room, or regular conversations with staff who are always happy to spend time talking to me. All the staff know Dad well and everyone takes time to stop and to have a chat and a joke with him. I can highly recommend Southlands and feel we made an excellent choice for his home.

Susan Sowden

Job Title: Home Manager Joined: 2003

I have been the home manager at Southlands for 22 years and have worked in the care sector for approximately 40 years. I started my journey as a care assistant in a private care home whilst having a young family and I fell in love with all aspects of care and making a difference to so many lives.


I enjoy working in care services as I am very much a people person and enjoy engaging with staff, residents and families.


I am a Mother of 3 boys and have 8 grandchildren - family life is very important to me. In my spare time I love to go on holiday, especially Lanzarote, but I also really enjoy spending the weekend with family at my caravan in the dales.

Job Title: Clinical Deputy Manager Joined: 2010

I started working at Bupa as a care assistant in 2010 whilst I was doing my nursing qualification in the University of Northampton. When I qualified as a Nurse in 2013, I became staff nurse and then progressed to Unit Manager, and now I'm Clinical Deputy Manager.


I first acquired my qualification as a nurse in 2007 after finishing my Bachelor’s Degree in one of the Universities in the Philippines. I eventually worked in hospitals, then decided to come to the UK to explore other options - I've always had an interest in Geriatric Nursing, hence why I chose to work and progress in the care home sector. I enjoy working here as I like working within the Southlands team. Making a difference in someone else’s life is the most fulfilling feeling as a nurse.


I live local to the home, in Harrogate with my 7 year old daughter. In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my daughter doing gardening, crafts and watching movies. My family and I like to travel and explore different cultures and foods.

I am from Romania, where my family still live. My friends live in Harrogate, which is what brought me here originally. I love any kind of sport and socialising, so in my spare time you'll find me training or spending time with my friends.
