Thistle Hill and staff is a wonderful home for my dad, he has dementia and Parkinson's and he has come close to dying a couple of times, both times he has bounced back from the brink thanks to the excellent care provided. It's a really lovely home and I feel my dad is at peace here. The staff and management
are all really nice and polite at all times.

Moving mum to Thistle Hill was the best decision we have made. She is so well cared for and all the staff are fantastic. We cannot fault them.
Since Covid-19 the staff have gone above and beyond to help my mum and us to still have contact with each other. The staff are coming in before their shift
starts to enable us to speak to mum saying it's not too much trouble and they just want to ensure all their residents are happy.
Thank you for all your hard work. It does not go unnoticed.

Everyone is working together through this difficult and uncertain time, and the staff are doing a fantastic job supporting the residents in making contact with relatives.

I always found all of the staff friendly, helpful and most importantly very caring towards my friend, who had dementia and although a lovely lady, towards the end, could be a little difficult and rude to them. They were all well aware that this was the illness, not the real lady and treated her with
great patience and care. On her birthday they had a little celebration and persuaded her to have a shower and put on a smart dress. We brought wine and it was a lovely atmosphere.
My friend did not like the food but, having said that she did not like any food! It always looked very good to me.
Towards the end, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the staff made a special effort to organise FaceTime calls to me, which was a great comfort to both my friend and me.
Reply from Mandy Scott, General Manager at Barchester Thistle Hill Care HomeIt was a real pleasure to look after this lady, she showed a lot of spirit and kept the staff on their toes. I am so pleased that you were able to facetime during a difficult time.

1. Lack of communication: management to residents and relatives.
2. Lack of staff in all disciplines. High staff turnover: pay and inducement policy implications? Too much reliance on agency cover: cost?

On the whole, the home is quite good, however staffing levels need assessing and more continuity on the night shift would make this an excellent home.

The staff and volunteers at Thistle Hill cared for my father who had been sectioned under the mental health act as his dementia caused him to suffer great anxiety leading to behaviour which could be both unpredictable and aggressive.
During the 20 months he resided in the home, he calmed down enormously
thanks to the high quality of the professional, patient care he received.
My father is now at rest and my family and I would like to thank the team at Thistle Hill for all they did for him during his residency and for making us feel so welcome when we visited.

My mother has dementia and is not easy to handle as she is aggressive at times. Also, she has a high fall risk. When my mother ended up in hospital after breaking her thumb, her care provider wouldn't take her back and so we were left trying to find a care home provider. As soon as we went to view Thistle
Hill, the welcome from walking into reception and upstairs in the dementia unit gave us such a warm feeling that my mum would be well looked after. The care is fantastic and nothing is too much trouble.
Reply from Mandy Scott, General Manager at Barchester Thistle Hill Care HomeThank you for your review. We aim to make all our visitors feel at home when they visit us at Thistle Hill. I have been a resident for nine years. We are short of carers, no cover when they have holidays, this time becomes very muddled.
Dignity is not carried out at times. Some care staff have no bedside manners.
We have new management, who don't seem to be in the same manner which we had yet.
Cleanliness
is poor, we have only one good cleaner.
Value for money is low, as some jobs are very muddled.

Having to use your centre for my wife's respite through social service Harrogate, we were deeply impressed in every aspect of care and attention of each member of staff even part-timers. The standard of hygiene, food, accommodation and friendliness was of a very high standard comparable to a hotel!!
How the efficiency is kept so high in this day of scarce carers is beyond us, this is the benchmark all care home should take up!! Thank you so much.

Directly I arrive (by taxi) an easy chair and a coffee supply appear to keep me comfortable while a push chair is provided. I visit room 23 which is practically the farthest from the entrance. I am 92 years old and am disabled. When I play and when I visit I sit in the push chair until I leave. I am
fed with coffee at the end of my visit until the taxi arrives. My shoulder bag and raincoat are stored for me at the entrance.

Current Review Score: 8.7 (8.664)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.7 (8.664) out of 10 for Barchester Thistle Hill Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.4 out of 5 from 10 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.2 out of 5 from 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.435 for Barchester Thistle Hill Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (64 Excellents x 5) + (40 Goods x 4) + (9 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Poors x 2) + (1 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 115 Ratings = 4.435
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.229 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Barchester Thistle Hill Care Home is based on 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 = 3.7
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 85 registered maximum number of service users is 17. 9 Positive Reviews ÷ 17 = 0.529
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
