Overall Experience 4.0 out of 5
I visited 9 or 10 nursing homes and decided that this home was the best for my husband. He has been here for 5 months now and I am very pleased with the care he is receiving.
The home is very efficiently run, always clean and tidy. The care he is given by the carers and nurses is very good. He is
always clean and tidy when I visit him.
He enjoys his meals and likes the staff. I am welcomed everytime I visit and I can talk to the staff or manager anytime.
I would certainly recommend this care home to anyone.

Overall Experience 2.0 out of 5
I feel there are not enough staff to give residents the attention they need. When my husband needs to go to the toilet at times there is only one carer on the unit so therefore he can't get taken, sometimes I have had to take him myself.
I would like my husband to have physio to help him to walk as
he isn't too good at walking.
There doesn't seem much going on to give the residents the stimulation that they need.
I feel they don't get taken out into the sunshine as much as they should. Products I take seem to disappear from his room.

My family and I are extremely pleased with the care my father received in the two years he spent at Thistle Hill (February 2014 until end of December 2015) and would like to take the opportunity to thank all those involved. The staff, without exception, formed very good relationships with him and anticipated
his needs very well, responding to him consistently as a valued individual with calmness, skill and good humour, despite the fact that his dementia could cause him to behave in a difficult manner at times.

The end of life care during his last illness was absolutely outstanding and was better than anything we could have hoped for. The skill and compassion of the nurses and carers involved in this were amazing and they frequently went the extra mile. In addition to the fact that his death was enabled to be extremely peaceful and 'right', they never failed to look after us as a family and the ten days we spent between us at his bedside were made as comfortable as possible with numerous very thoughtful gestures being made.

We will never forget Thistle Hill and will recommend you very highly to all family and friends. Thank you.

Current Review Score: 8.7 (8.664)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.7 (8.664) out of 10 for Barchester Thistle Hill Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.4 out of 5 from 10 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.2 out of 5 from 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.435 for Barchester Thistle Hill Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (64 Excellents x 5) + (40 Goods x 4) + (9 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Poors x 2) + (1 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 115 Ratings = 4.435
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.229 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Barchester Thistle Hill Care Home is based on 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 = 3.7
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 85 registered maximum number of service users is 17. 9 Positive Reviews ÷ 17 = 0.529
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
