My dad sadly passed away earlier this month after 6 month battle with cancer. His final 4 months were spent in Aspen Court where his care was well above and beyond our expectations.
The manager and her team were magic and certainly went the extra mile with care and attention to my dad's needs. Our
frustration at him not being allowed home due to his care needs was quickly dispelled by the commitment of the staff, especially the girls on his floor, who became our extended family.
A big thank you to the manager and her team for supporting my dad through his final days and for helping myself and my family to cope throughout a very emotional time.

My mam was a respite resident for 2 weeks. I visited 3 times, and each time I found there to be only 2 staff on the shift at any one time on floor 2. There were a few residents who needed 2 staff to assist them with personal care which then left no staff in the lounge. A few of the residents are prone
to getting up and wandering but are very unsteady and this caused drinks to be knocked over. Some of the residents are loud and shout a lot and nothing was said or done to calm them down. I asked if there was going to be any activities one day and the staff member said she had no idea what to do with them. On the day I dropped my mam off, I left money for her hair to be cut and the manager said she could get a chiropodist in. Neither of which were done. I took her to her day centre, and when she was brought home the staff said that her incontinence pad was soaked and soiled when she had arrived. Not a good experience.

We chose Birchdale when the refurbishment programme was in full swing, every care by staff and management was taken to minimise disruption to residents and visitors at all times and the areas we left clean and tidy every evening. A positive reflection on how the home is run.

The rooms are of a high

quality, spacious, clean, and well furnished with ensuite WC and shower/wet room facilities. However, it is the staff and management team that impressed me the most with their compassionate care and professionalism shown at all times, they helped my Dad enormously encouraging his walking and engaging him in activities throughout the day, not only did they demonstrate this whilst caring for my Dad, but all the residents with dementia.

The manager and her team provide a safe and caring environment for the vulnerable; I can’t thank them enough for what they have done for our family.

I have spent a considerable amount of time during the past nine months (4/5 visits per week) at Birchdale Care Home. The organisation is extremely well managed by the Care Home Manager and this is, without a doubt, it's major strength. Clearly, she knows the business inside out and nothing gets past
her. The vast majority of staff regularly go way and beyond their normal call of duty, I have personally witnessed this on many occasions.
The care given, particularly on the nursing floor is outstanding. Compassion, sensitivity and consideration come as part of the package, often under the most difficult of circumstances.
Following recent refurbishment, the rooms (all ensuite) are of an exceptionally high standard.

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.9 (9.913) out of 10 for Aspen Court is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 28 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 28 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.913 for Aspen Court is calculated as follows: ( (296 Excellents x 5) + (24 Goods x 4) + (2 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 322 Ratings = 4.913
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Aspen Court is based on 28 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 63 registered maximum number of service users is 12.6, which has been reached with 28 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
