St Mark’s Court Care Home serves a community that was once dominated by shipbuilding and many of the staff and residents have lived in the area all their lives. This explains why there’s such a warm, communal feeling there. Staff, residents and their families have many shared experiences, which helps staff to build meaningful relationships with residents.

Visitors to St Mark’s Court often remark that it is very homely. This could be down to the warm greeting every visitor receives but it could also be the fact that every bedroom is different, as residents are encouraged to give their room an individual feel.

Residents at St Mark’s Court are encouraged to be busy and active, and they are helped in this by the energetic and creative activities co-ordinator, who supports staff and also has strong links with the local community.

The Salvation Army holds a weekly lunch club. A dance teacher comes once a week, as well as an artist. Students from the local college also do sessions on memory with residents and help them to create a story which they can write down and retell to the others.

St Mark’s Court takes part in ‘HenPower’, a project that creatively ‘hengages’ older people in arts activities and hen-keeping to promote health and wellbeing. Residents enjoy relaxing with the hens, which they may put on their knee, place their hand on them to settle them and then just sit quietly.

In general, residents get involved in a host of activities around the home, from laying tables to the gardening club.

My mother struggles to drink on her own. Sometimes I visit and she is in lounge without access to a drink of water which she drinks a lot of. I tend to pour a lot of water down her on visits. I realise the work being carried out is sometimes really difficult.

My mam has been in St Marks for nearly six months, my dad was here for around six weeks until he recently passed. In all the time my parents have spent in St. Mark's they have been shown kindness, given lots of help and understanding in difficult circumstances myself and sisters much appreciate all
that has been given to them. Michael.

Dad has been living here for two years and has been well looked after by the friendly, dedicated, and professional staff. The home is clean, warm, well-managed, and serves a great variety of food and drinks at every meal. There's always plenty to do for those who enjoy socialising, with activities and
entertainment on offer. The new manager is sociable, approachable, empathetic, and takes a hands-on approach to her role. Dad is happy at St Marks, and I believe living here has greatly improved his mental and physical health, as well as his longevity.

Absolutely filthy place. Staff had no hygiene training of either food or patient cleanliness. Room very rarely cleaned and never thoroughly. Bed and mattress never clean and very old, holes in mattress. Scruffy stained bedding- mould on pillows. Patient left in bed for 10 weeks. Mould growing on breakfast
butter. Bins always full and rarely emptied. Furniture falling to bits. Patient left long periods in urine or faeces. Patient not monitored properly, falling on floor regularly. Constant noise from patients screaming day and night.

St Marks care home in Gateshead is absolutely appauling. Some members of staff are kind and do try to work for the best of the residents others however I have found lazy and are unable to complete the most basic of care tasks. If you're looking for a care home that serves awful food, leaves residents
in dirty beds and in dirty rooms, does not protect residents medical record or personal data and stores clinical waste incorrectly this is the place for you. If I could give a zero star rating I would.

We are very pleased with the care being provided. The staff are all excellent and there are so many planned activities. Clearly the focus is on meeting residents needs and supporting them to be as independent as possible. As family members we are always kept informed and consulted. The home is clean
and the rooms are a good size with accessible call bells that are always quickly responded to.

My father-in-law was in here for 2 weeks for palliative care, I would like to thank all the nursing staff and carers. The love, care, compassion and support from all the staff was exceptional. They go above and beyond to help all residents in this home, I would highly recommend it to anyone! They deserve
more than 5 stars. Thank you very much from the bottom of our hearts!

My dad transferred to St Marks and was here for a year and he was on the residential floor then went on nursing, he was happy but then was unhappy.
So as a family, we decided to take him out and he is now in a new care home. He is really happy now.

Very prompt and efficient move-in process and changing room to be more comfortable and near the nurses station. Good communication from nursing staff with health updates. Staff are positive and engaging. Would like more receptiveness to sensor mat alarms, but understand pressure on staffing, plus clothes
missing during laundry. But overall, our family have been very grateful of the level of care and respect offered to our family members and we would recommend St Marks to others!

We had to come to this home for respite as our roof blew off in the heavy wind and the home got soaked inside with all the rain. And we had nowhere else to go. All the staff welcomed us and looked after us so well.
I can't thank everyone so much for all they have done for us.

Current Review Score: 8.9 (8.855)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.9 (8.855) out of 10 for St Marks Court is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.0 out of 5 from 16 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.9 out of 5 from 14 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.005 for St Marks Court is calculated as follows: ( (82 Excellents x 5) + (73 Goods x 4) + (9 Satisfactorys x 3) + (24 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 188 Ratings = 4.005
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.85 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for St Marks Court is based on 14 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.85
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 60 registered maximum number of service users is 12, which has been reached with 14 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
