St Mark’s Court Care Home serves a community that was once dominated by shipbuilding and many of the staff and residents have lived in the area all their lives. This explains why there’s such a warm, communal feeling there. Staff, residents and their families have many shared experiences, which helps staff to build meaningful relationships with residents.

Visitors to St Mark’s Court often remark that it is very homely. This could be down to the warm greeting every visitor receives but it could also be the fact that every bedroom is different, as residents are encouraged to give their room an individual feel.

Residents at St Mark’s Court are encouraged to be busy and active, and they are helped in this by the energetic and creative activities co-ordinator, who supports staff and also has strong links with the local community.

The Salvation Army holds a weekly lunch club. A dance teacher comes once a week, as well as an artist. Students from the local college also do sessions on memory with residents and help them to create a story which they can write down and retell to the others.

St Mark’s Court takes part in ‘HenPower’, a project that creatively ‘hengages’ older people in arts activities and hen-keeping to promote health and wellbeing. Residents enjoy relaxing with the hens, which they may put on their knee, place their hand on them to settle them and then just sit quietly.

In general, residents get involved in a host of activities around the home, from laying tables to the gardening club.

All the staff were exceptional when my mother needed two separate respite stays to recover from two broken hip incidents. They were professional, caring and very friendly making my mother feel at home. She loved her stay and was sorry to leave.

Suffering complex nursing needs, concerned St Mark's Court would struggle looking after my very sick husband. The staff were amazing giving care far beyond the call of duty, showing humanity and empathy.

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.0 (9.021) out of 10 for St Marks Court is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.1 out of 5 from 19 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.9 out of 5 from 16 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.121 for St Marks Court is calculated as follows: ( (113 Excellents x 5) + (74 Goods x 4) + (10 Satisfactorys x 3) + (2 Poors x 2) + (24 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 223 Ratings = 4.121
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.9 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for St Marks Court is based on 16 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.9
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 60 registered maximum number of service users is 12, which has been reached with 16 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
