For anyone looking for a care home for their loved ones I highly recommend Barchester Lochduhar Care Home in Dumfries as I have found the care my brother receives is absolutely wonderful. I couldn't have asked for any better, the staff are so understanding of his daily needs and are so patient with him. When I visit or call the staff are always there to let me know how he is, they take the time to talk to me, anything that he needs they always let me know or if he is unwell I am kept fully informed. I would definitely give Lochduhar ten stars as they thoroughly deserve it.

My brother has lived in Lochduhar for over four years. During this time I have got to know the staff and their routine. They all work very hard in every area, but always have time to answer any queries I might have. My brother always smiles at the staff and seems very happy in their company and that is very reassuring. I visit every day and always feel welcome by everyone in Lochduhar.

Staff are first class. Nothing is any bother to them. If you have a problem or complaint, it is sorted out very quickly. Home is very clean, and food is really very good.

Mum moved to Barchester Lochduhar Care Home 3 months ago from another care home in the area. It has been an immensely positive move for her, and therefore also for my father. Her whole demeanour has improved, as have her mobility and communication. Staff actively engage with her and with the family. They seek out activities that could interest her. We cannot believe how quickly these improvements have come about. This is a place where she can live with Alzheimer's, not suffer from it. Many thanks to all staff.

Mum has only been in Lochduhar for a month, and already I see a positive change in her. She had been hospitalised for six months prior to the placement. Although she is bed-bound, it is so good to see her smiling and laughing once more. The care and support from the staff have been outstanding. My sincere thanks for making this a real home from home.

Very pleased with the overall standard of care at Lochduhar. Staff are caring and efficient. Always phone to notify me of any health issues that may arise. The food on offer and the cleanliness of the home is of a high standard. It gives me peace of mind to know my cousin is being so well looked after.

My grandparent moved into Barchester Lochduhar Care Home in October 2021. We could not have asked for a smoother transition. The staff were excellent and made us feel at ease after having a traumatic experience at a previous care home. The staff made moving in day a lovely morning by showing attention and just making the whole experience as easy and relaxing as they could. We had no concerns whatsoever about leaving my grandparent in the safe hands of the carers. Over the last 7-months, my grandparent has flourished and have got some spark back, such as getting involved in activities, proper nutritional food, personal care and all in all, just superb care. We can’t fault anything. If I was to mention one thing but to be seen as constructive criticism, we found that the care plan had been done without family involvement and on me asking about this I was given to read, was some inaccurate information (which has since been removed) but possibly family involvement prior to resident moving in would help.

I cannot thank the staff at Barchester Lochduhar Care Home enough for the care they give my mother, but this weekend, they went above and beyond, even though they were busy with Jubilee celebrations they still made my mother’s 90th birthday very special, both on Friday and on Saturday when the family gathered in the garden to celebrate. Also, a thank you to the chef for the amazing cake. Thank you all again your the best.

Our mum moved to Lochduhar Care Home earlier this year having been with a different care provider for the preceding 10 months. In a matter of months, our mums quality of life, wellbeing and disposition have been completely transformed and this is down to the care, attention to detail and excellent nursing care she has received. In turn, this has had a positive effect on us her family and we are completely at peace in the knowledge she is experiencing first-rate personalised care and also confident that we would be notified should there be any cause for concern. The staff always make us feel like family and not an imposition on them, and for that, we are very appreciative. In summary, we could not commend the home, surroundings, and the staff highly enough and thank them unreservedly.

Lochduhar Care Home was recommended to us when my mother-in-law could no longer cope at home alone. Having no previous experience of the procedure and being quite desperate, communication was quick and everything explained so nothing felt complicated. Very efficient and happy to help. The place itself is lovely and clean and plenty of activities going on to suit everyone’s needs. Staff are excellent, I’m well informed and feel she’s well looked after.

For the first time in 17-weeks, I was able to visit my sister outside, social distancing, in the marquee erected adjacent to the care home. I was welcomed by a lovely member of staff who detailed all requirements and then escorted me around the building. My sister was brought out in her wheelchair by another familiar member of staff, and we have 1/2 hour to chat. Everything was done safely, and it was a lovely experience. I know my sister is well looked after and I can relax in this knowledge.

Hard to review as haven't been in the building since 15th March but outside visiting well organised and staff always seem very cheerful.

Generally speaking, I am very satisfied with the care and support my mother receives in Lochduhar Care Home. I am particularly satisfied with the care she has received during the Corona Virus pandemic - no cases of the virus inside the care home so far. It is difficult to assess inside the care home at the moment as I have not been inside since March 2020. Communication has been good. I am delighted with the outside visits - the staff work hard.

Staff have also telephoned to discuss care-plans, any changes in my mother-in-law's condition, and also to let us know when she was needing toiletries etc.
We have also been able to discuss how my mother-in-law would be able to cope with visiting when social distancing was introduced, and I felt that the members of staff really know my mother-in-law, and her issues.

My uncle is a resident at Lochduhar, and since he began living there two years ago, he has had regular visitors including my mum (his sister) who visited daily. When the COVID-19 situation happened, understandably, visiting was suspended. However, thanks to the incredible effort and dedication of the team at Lochduhar, we have been able to have weekly (sometimes more) Skype communication with my uncle as well as regular photographs of him enjoying the sunshine and activities. I don't think we can ever express how grateful we have been as a family to be able to have this communication, and it has been incredible to see how upbeat and positive the staff are during these calls. This positivity has ensured that my uncle who lives with dementia remains calm, safe, happy and secure. For us, as a family, this has been invaluable. Lochduhar you have been a shining example of core person-centred care and compassion during these uncertain times. Thank you, and keep up the excellent work.

Meet the Team (1)

Hi, my name is Gillian, and I am General Manager here at Lochduhar.
I have been very fortunate to have had a career in nursing that has spanned both the NHS and the independent sector since qualifying as a registered nurse in 1989. I studied a BA in Nursing Studies in Glasgow from 1985-89 and then graduated with an MSc in Palliative Care in 2014 from Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh.
Previous roles have involved working with older people, working within an acute surgical ward and, before joining Lochduhar, I spent working in a hospice as Head of Care, leading and managing staff to deliver palliative and end-of-life care to patients with life-limiting illnesses, and also supporting their families and carers.
I am a dedicated, qualified nurse and my real passion lies in ensuring every resident is treated with respect and dignity and the care they receive is of the highest standard, which reflects their individual needs.
I am responsible for effectively inspiring and leading the staff team to ensure the delivery of an excellent standard of care that promotes independence and dignity and positively enhances the lives of individual residents in our care.
