Laurels Lodge care home provides nursing care to up to 45 older people with dementia including those with learning disabilities. The home is situated in Woodside, Aberdeen, close to local shops and pubs and a short journey from Aberdeen city centre and the sea.

The home is bright and tastefully decorated. Each bedroom has a television point and telephone point as well as en-suite facilities. The home also features a garden, lounge and dining areas and a hair salon.

There is plenty to do, with group activity sessions including art, music and visiting entertainers. All food is freshly prepared in the kitchen, is nutritionally balanced and caters to individual dietary requirements.

Both my father and mother are now residents at Laurels Lodge Nursing Care Home. My father was admitted from a long term placement elsewhere in June (he has vascular dementia) and we were then most lucky to secure a place for my mother to follow him 6th July: She has frontotemporal lobe. I cannot recommend
Laurels more highly.
My parents, now safe and together in a loving and supportive environment. Obviously, due to the COVID 19 situation both my parents have had to settle in their new environment without me being able to help them adjust to settling into their new rooms and routines. However, it is a huge testament to the wonderful management of the home manager and the loving care and support of her dedicated, kind, supportive and warm staff, that they have settled so well and clearly both thriving and happy. I cannot believe how lucky we are and unreservedly recommend Laurels Lodge and the wonderful staff. Thank you so much.

My mum has been in Laurels Lodge for more than 5 years and has been looked after and cared for excellently. The staff are absolutely lovely and speak to my mum with care and respect. My mum is always clean and so is the accommodation. The staff are very approachable. I would highly recommend Laurels

There is a real atmosphere of care here - not only of the residents but also of visiting family. On many visits, I have never seen anyone showing the slightest sign of irritations in their dealings with residents. A real effort is made to meet the needs of the individual. Regarding value for money -
I have no other experience to make a comparison.

I don't know where to start with the positive message I am about to leave for this care home. I would not name any individuals as they have all been wonderful to my mother since July 2017. She then suffered a nonrecoverable stroke on 3rd Aug 2018 and after a brief spell in the hospital she was returned
to Laurels Lodge for her palliative care. During the 9 days she hung on, the staff spent time with her, cared for her, kept her clean and comfortable which was such a comfort to all our family. Although my mum was in the home for medical reasons, I feel the staff all treated me and my family like friends and critics would say that's what they are there to do but as the son of a resident who visited her very regularly, my opinion is that they went way above and beyond what any of us could have imagined that they would do for our mother. I truly and sincerely would like to thank each and every one of you. Love to you all.

My dad hasn't been here very long but it seems to be a nice place and the staff are really friendly. He seems to have settled in okay. My only complaint would be the road to here and not much parking space.

Would just like to say how delighted I am with the care that my mum is receiving at Laurels Lodge. I had to take mum out of a different care home as she was not being looked after very well (in fact it was very poor) but the difference in such a short time (4 months) is warming to the heart. My mum
looks really happy and content. The staff are just brilliant, very caring and patient. They are consistent too, always the same faces, which to a person with Alzheimer's is very important. Mum always looks clean and well cared for. There are lots of activities and the social side of Laurels Lodge is just brilliant. Parties with great music and entertainment.
The food and snacks look really good too. I honestly can't complain about anything. In fact, I would go so far to say that if I ever have to go into a care home I would choose this one. Thank you for all your hard work, it's really appreciated.

This is a home from home, Mum has been here now for 8 years and in that time she has been treated with dignity and love. There are plenty of activities and outings which Mum enjoys. The staff are extremely friendly and caring and I would class them as extended family and if ever we need advice or have

I had a very negative opinion of care homes. Came and viewed Laurels Lodge Care Home and was very impressed. Since my mother has been a resident I've been very happy how she's cared for all the girls are lovely and do a great job nothing is too much bother.

Mum was originally in a care home fifty miles away from me.
We looked at a few but we were so happy with Laurels from the start. With help from the care manager, we moved her to Laurels. She settled so well, they were so caring and friendly. Mum's personality changed for the better, she was just a
joy all thanks to Laurels staff.
It's such a relief for us, as it's just not possible to have Mum at home with me, this is just wonderful.
No faults at all.

It has been 9 months since my mother became a resident at Laurels Lodge and I cannot praise it enough. Since the first day, from management to carers, she has received the best care anyone could wish for. All the staff are so lovely to residents and to their families, giving it a nice feel-good factor.
There are loads of memorabilia for the residents to enjoy, it's always immaculate and well presented. when I speak to other relatives, nobody can come up with any negative things about Laurels Lodge which is a great statement.

I, along with my brother and sisters are delighted with the care my mother received in Laurels Lodge. She is always extremely well dressed and gets her hair done regularly. She is always smiling and the staff are superb.
As a family, we have the utmost trust and faith in everyone in the care home

Since my mother moved into Laurels Lodge, her whole appearance and health has improved greatly. She was no longer safe in her own home. When we made the decision to find her a care home, we viewed 3 and the minute we walked into Laurel Lodge, we knew this was the place for her. Warm and welcoming surroundings
aimed to stimulate. Friendly staff and management with plenty to occupy her. I would highly recommend Laurels Lodge and already have done.

My friend is difficult as she is constantly asking when is she getting home and it can be very tiring. She gets very aggressive when it is suggested that she is unfit to go home. The staff say in 2 days and carry on as such. The staff cope well with her. My friend has a fantastic long term memory and
the activities organiser is constantly trying to source new books and pictures to stimulate conversation and reminisce.
My friend lacks company of other residents for conversation as no one in her unit is able to converse, but the staff are good at sitting and having a chat with her. She complains about her bed and I have discussed with staff, but only certain matresses can be used with the bed type. She may picture her bed at home which was very high.

Sheila

Sheila Gesma

Job Title: Home Manager Joined: 2000

Sheila has been with Laurels Lodge Care Home for over 20 years and started working as a Care Assistant while she was completing her Nursing Adaptation Course in the UK.


Sheila is a Registered General Nurse who had years of experience working in various clinical areas in a hospital setting in the Philippines before coming to the UK. After 4 months of arriving in the UK, Sheila received her NMC nursing registration and worked as a Staff Nurse at Laurels Lodge then worked her way up the ladder and became the Home Manager in 2012. Sheila has also completed the SVQ Level 4 in Leadership and Management in 2010.


Outside of work, Sheila likes listening to music and cross-stitching, but she has also participated in exciting events such as white water rafting and Go Ape.


Sheila values her team and always makes it a point to thank them even in the simplest of things and she believes in the saying, "Why leave it for tomorrow when you can do it today".

Jay

Jay Acorda

Job Title: Deputy Home Manager Joined: 2021

Jay first arrived in the UK in 2004. Completed his Nursing Adaptation Course in 5 months and became a Full Registered General Nurse in the UK in the same year. Jay has clinical nursing experiences in the Philippines and other countries and spent the first 9 years of his nursing career at Laurels Lodge Care Home. Jay became the Charge Nurse of the home from 2006 to 2012 then Deputy Manager until 2013. Jay worked in other different Care Homes for many years as a Staff Nurse and Deputy Manager and came back to Laurels Lodge in 2021.


Jay loves music and dancing. He enjoys hiking and exploring Scotland's most beautiful places with his family.
Jay believes that "Life is a quest filled with many choices, each one of us will experience life in our special way".

Amanda

Amanda Yeats

Job Title: Senior Nursing Care Assistant Joined: 1999

Amanda is the longest-serving member of staff at Laurels Lodge Care Home, she has been an employee at Laurels for 23 years now, she started as a Care Assistant and worked her way up to become a Senior Nursing Care Assistant.
Amanda plays various roles in the home, she is currently the home’s Moving & Handling Coordinator, Dementia Ambassador, Oral Health Champion, Enquiry Champion, Fire Warden and Infection Prevention & Control Champion.

Joanna

Joanna Scollay

Job Title: Care Assistant Joined: 2011

Joanna has worked as a Care Assistant at Laurels Lodge Care Home for 12 years now and continues to enjoy her job. Joanna also works as a part-time Cook and is also good at it.


She has been chosen as the Laurels Gem of the Month for March 2023 for her dedication and compassion, she is ready to go that extra mile for the residents and the home.


Joanna is a jolly person and is well known in the home to be always "on the go". Joanna is also one of the Oral Care and IPC Champions in the home.

Nomeda

Nomeda Jakstiene

Job Title: Head Chef Joined: 2015

Nomeda has made a difference in our catering department since she joined Laurels Lodge Care Home.


She has managed the kitchen and her team effectively and is a proactive leader.


Nomeda is a cat lover and together with her pet Bengal, they have joined various competitions which they have won many times. Nomeda also likes travelling and spending time outdoors.


Nomeda believes that "tomorrow will be a better day."

Morag

Morag Leslie

Job Title: Senior Nursing Care Assistant Joined: 2015

Morag has been with Laurels Lodge Care Home for over 13 years now, she believes that working in the home has changed her life significantly for the better. Morag enjoys spending time with the residents and sharing a laugh with them and with her colleagues. Many times Morag went above and beyond for the residents and the home.


Morag loves being a grandmother and she spends most of her days off looking after her niece and grandson.
Morag believes in the saying that "laughter is the best medicine".

Helen

Helen Harper

Job Title: Activities Coordinator Joined: 2019

Helen joined the team at Laurels Lodge as a Care Assistant, a totally new career path for her. Helen has recently taken on the role of a full-time Activities Coordinator and she is enjoying it. She has stepped into this new role with passion and enthusiasm, always putting the residents first.


Helen believes in the saying, "What's afore you won't get you."

Ivy

Ivy Lavares

Job Title: Laundry Assistant Joined: 2015

Ivy works at Laurels Lodge as a full-time Laundry Assistant, she joined the team more than 8 years ago and still enjoys working here. Ivy participates in the activities in the home and enjoys speaking to the residents.


Her motto is: "There's always a light at the end of the tunnel."

Kevin

Kevin Mair

Job Title: Domestic Assistant Joined: 2023

Kevin works at Laurels Lodge as a Domestic Assistant, he enjoys helping his colleagues and he loves spending talking to the residents. Kevin is very good at keeping the interiors of the home clean, tidy and presentable.


Outside work, he loves dressing up as Boy George on special occasions.


Kevin believes in facing the problem right away rather than leaving it until it builds up.

Vibelaine

Vibelaine Alta

Job Title: Staff Nurse Joined: 2019

Vibelaine likes to be called Vibz. She is a Staff Nurse at Laurels Lodge Care Home and has been working since 2019. Vibz is an international nurse hired from the Philippines, she completed her OSCE within 3 months and became a Registered General Nurse in the UK. Vibz enjoys working at Laurels Lodge and gets on well with her colleagues.


Outside work, Vibz likes spending time with Family and Friends travelling, camping and hiking.


Vibz believes in the saying "What does a man profit if he gains the whole world but loses his soul".

John

John McLain

Job Title: Maintenance Supervisor Joined: 2024

Originally from Nottingham, John moved to Scotland after 17 years in the military, he decided to work in the healthcare sector as he is looking for a job that is rewarding. Since John joined the team at Laurel's, he has developed a good rapport with the residents and his colleagues.


The things John likes to do are wild camping and touring on his motorcycle, and the things to know about John amongst many things is that he is a qualified diving instructor!
