Having had a very sad experience with another care home when my Father was in a similar circumstance, I approached my Mum's admission anywhere with great trepidation. However, Tor-Na-Dee has made it so much easier for us by providing the standard of care they do for Mum. Having arrived from hospital
underweight and frail, she was so much better and happier in a couple of months. All non-care staff I've encountered have been polite, helpful and cheerful. The care staff are excellent and we've seen very little staff turnover which is a blessing. Their patience and kindness, given their daily work, is to be applauded They are well trained in going with the flow and using diversions. The activities staff add much to the mix and know the residents well. Their organisation of daily activities, tasks, events, concerts, fresh air time in the lovely gardens, etc., helps to give Tor-Na-Dee a good feeling of community. This care home is a model to be emulated, please keep it up.

The standard of care my Father receives is generally very good. His carers are kind and treat him with dignity and patience. The care staff sometimes seem to be overstretched and short in numbers at times. The activities staff work very hard to provide a wide variety of activities to suit different
interests, the musical entertainment is particularly well received.
Reply from Samantha Debenham, Marketing Support Administrator at Tor-na-DeeWe’re grateful for your feedback and are delighted with the positive comments and scores for the care and support we provide. We would also like to thank you for the constructive feedback. We work very hard to ensure there is sufficient staffing levels at Tor-ne-dee at all times, and although on occasion staff may appear to be stretched, this is due to situations that are not always obvious to visitors.
If you have any further concerns the home manager would be happy to discuss them with you in person, alternatively please feel free to discuss in more detail at the next monthly relative meeting or at your individual review.

I can't praise Tor-na-Dee highly enough. My mother has been there for more than six years and sadly has deteriorated and has had no real quality of life for a long, long time. Throughout, all the staff at Tor-na-Dee have cared for her with great kindness, patience and understanding. They have also supported
my brother and me through difficult times. I am very sorry that my mother's last years have been so difficult and so much against what she would have wanted, but it has been a great comfort to my brother and me to know how well she is being looked after.

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.808) out of 10 for Tor-na-Dee is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 26 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 26 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.808 for Tor-na-Dee is calculated as follows: ( (252 Excellents x 5) + (51 Goods x 4) + (4 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 307 Ratings = 4.808
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Tor-na-Dee is based on 26 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 75 registered maximum number of service users is 15, which has been reached with 26 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Home Manager

I’ve been a registered nurse for more than a decade, mainly working with older people.

I chose to join Care UK because the organisation’s values match my own. There is also ongoing training, and we receive great support from the wider team.

One of the most important aspects of my role is to ensure everyone is safe and happy. It is wonderfully rewarding to see the positive difference the team here makes, enabling residents to live a fulfilling life.

As a home manager, it is important to be able to bring the team together and empower colleagues. Seeing a well-run team deliver the best possible care with a smile and seeing colleagues enjoying their roles makes me so proud of what I do. A big part of that means you need to have patience, empathy and kindness in this role; a good sense of humour helps too.

In 2024, we were recognised as the region of the year. For me and my colleagues, this was an incredible highlight.

Outside of work, I’m an enthusiastic scuba diver and have been lucky enough to dive in some amazing places; the Silfra tectonic plates are on my list to visit. I also have rescue dogs and help fund raise for various rescue charities.
