Review from Linda H (Daughter of Resident) published on 6 February 2023 Submitted via Website
Overall Experience
My mum has settled well into the home. She is happy with the care from the staff and enjoys participating in the daily activities and particularly the trips out. She has been to Westcliff on Sea, Christmas Lights in London, Old Time Music Hall, Queens Theatre and Romford Dogs. The range of activities and trips out is excellent.
Her room is comfortable which we have been able to make homely by getting shelving for her ornaments and pictures hung on the walls.
The only slight negative is the food which she tells me is often cold and the selections on the menu after choosing are not available. Very few vegetarian options which she personally prefers.

We are very happy with the home and have made the right choice for her care. The staff we have seen are all friendly and polite.

Reply from Claudia Ramsamy, Home Manager at Willows Care Home

Dear Linda, thank you for your lovely review. We have spoken to your mother on a few occasions about food and her preferences. We do, in fact, have a vegetarian option on the menu every day and also try to ensure that all hot food is served at the right temperature. However, we will keep in close...

The staff were very positive, supportive, encouraging and considerate. Caring towards residents and families. We were encouraged to visit. We saw excellent attitudes and approaches with Mum's fellow residents too. Names of residents by their bedroom doors are a good detail. Artwork in the corridors is appropriate. Lots of signs of resident activities being encouraged where appropriate.

Dear Janet, thank you so much for your heartfelt feedback and comments, which mean such a lot to the team. We are very grateful that you chose our home for your relative's care. My mum was moved to Willows for end-of-life care following a long period in hospital. From the minute she moved in she was treated with respect and dignity and whilst we all knew it was never going to end well, she received fantastic care right to the end.
The staff are really approachable and always ready and willing to speak to family and friends to provide updates, which was so refreshing after dealing with the hospital.
Mum often commented on how well she was being treated and how lovely everyone was who looked after her and I can only agree with her.
When the end came, the staff were so attentive and helpful, which made things so much easier.

Can't thank them enough for everything they did for Mum and our family.

My aunt has been in Willows Care Home since April 2021. I am really happy with the care given to her from day one. She has been well looked after and there is always someone to give us an update when we visit her. The staff on the ward are wonderful and they are attentive when my aunt needs anything. There are staff who walks in and helps her even though they are not on the same floor. There is always someone to help if we needed them. The reception staff are very polite and helpful. The outside area is welcoming, clean and well presented. The manager and her team have been really good in keeping the relatives up to date via telephone or email on new developments/activities. Thank you Willows Care Home Team - keep up the good work.

My mum is a long-term resident. The current manager has made a huge difference to the overall improvement in the running of the home. Long may she reign!

It has been a very difficult couple of years for the home due to Covid but I have been very impressed by how well they have managed the crisis and how accommodating they have been in allowing family members to visit - much more than many homes.

This home excels in all areas. Accommodation, food, activities, but above all the care and compassion shown by the staff! The home is expertly managed to ensure that all residents are catered for individually resulting in all their needs being met. My wife's aunt has quite complex needs due to her Parkinson's and anxiety issues that are managed expertly by the staff. I have no hesitation whatsoever in thoroughly recommending Willows Care Home.

Willows is always clean and the staff friendly.
Communication is sometimes difficult, particularly telephone calls to residents who cannot manage their own mobile or telephone.

They do have an excellent standard that if a resident has to go to hospital as an emergency a carer from Willows will accompany them, ambulance and A & E waits are so long this has been a great comfort to family and resident alike. There is a good activity schedule for residents who are able to participate and a lovely garden.

My dad came to Willows at the end of January and transitioned from the hospital on end of life.
In the time spent at Willows, he has now realised that Willows is an extension of his own family. The care that has been shown to my dad has been no more than above and beyond.

Only in the last couple of days did the manager ask my dad for the last wish that she could support my dad with what he would like, and it was to be able to go outside into the garden with some of his family. Without hesitation, the manager supported the family to make this happen and a tea garden party was put together. My dad was overwhelmed with appreciation. We thank you so much.

My relative currently has numerous problems as a result of her progressing illness, however, the staff and management always address her needs with sincere compassion. They take time to listen to her, discuss any issues she has and in doing so provide the very best of care. When I am not able to visit I can routinely keep up to date with her daily care by reading the online journal which is an excellent source of information. The carers and nurses are a well lead team as a result of excellent management.

My aunt passed away very recently. During her time at Willows, she was well looked after and treated with care, dignity and respect. The environment was pleasant and homely and visitors were made very welcome. My aunt didn't participate in all the activities, leaving her to enjoy watching. I am really happy with the care the Willows Care Home provides for my mother. My mother has been living at the Willows since April 2018. She had a challenging behaviour due to Alzheimer's disease and no other care home agreed to take her. Only the Willow's had a highly professional staff to handle her behaviour. I can't say enough how kind and caring everyone is there. They look after my mother like after a family member. The care home is always clean, the food is good, they provide snacks and drinks between the main meals. All services are well organised. They have a busy event schedule. Unfortunately, my mother couldn't really benefit from the events as her mental capacity was gone. But my mother-in-law that moved in last year and is in full mental capacity really enjoys all the events. We feel really lucky having our mothers living in the Willows Care Home.

My mum stayed in this home for two week's respite last August. Her dignity was not respected, she was not treated as an individual. Mum always looked dishevelled, hair not combed when visited most days. Her dietary needs were not met. Health and safety repairs to her room were not done. The bedding was not good quality and furniture of a basic standard. Mum's room had no heating even on cold days. We complained continuously but very little changed. Staff don't interact with residents in the main seating room, they just observe and in our opinion lacked training in dementia. The manager’s response to our written complaint was dismissive and full of denial, about our mum’s very poor experience. She got the dates of our mum’s stay completely wrong by two months. She even refused to take responsibility for many areas of our complaint. This home is the most expensive that we viewed at the time. However even though that wasn’t why we chose it, Mum did not receive the level of care expected.

Reply from Claudia Ramsamy, Home Manager at Willows Care Home

We are sorry that you are unhappy with your mum’s care during her two-week respite stay in August, and with my response to your email, received in October. Willows is a very well-led and well-run home with an approachable and responsive management team. All the staff and management are very welcoming, friendly and dedicated, and they obviously care about Mum and the other residents they look after. The home is modern, and residents' rooms and communal areas are kept clean, bright and airy. Mum has been a resident at the Willows for over four years, and she and we know she is safe, generally happy (taking into account her medical condition) and in good hands. We'd have no hesitation in encouraging other families seeking a care home for their relative to actively consider The Willows.
