I could not have been more pleasantly surprised with the standard of care I received and the quality of the facilities. The rooms were more than adequate even with my electric wheelchair. The food was of an exceptional standard throughout the whole week of my stay. The diligence of all the staff was exceptional both those involved with my nursing needs and those running the establishment.

My mother was a resident at Hazelwell for almost two years. She received excellent care and attention throughout, and especially in her last few days. All the staff, without exception, were wonderful. They became like her second family and she loved them, I also received great support from them. I will be ever grateful that we chose Hazelwell for my mother. I would happily recommend the home to others - each resident is treated with dignity.

My uncle has been a resident at Hazelwell for a few months now. He has settled in well and considers Hazelwell to be his home. The nurses, care staff, catering, laundry, activities, cleaning staff, continue to treat him with care, respect and dignity. His needs and choices are met, he is listened to and included in his care decisions. As a family, we are supported and kept informed as to any changes in my uncle's health and his care. We appreciate all that everyone at Hazelwell does to ensure my uncle's care and happiness.

Speaking as someone who has assessed nursing homes and worked as a doctor for over 30 years, I feel compelled to send a note. The standard of this home is exceptionally high. For a start, I don't care how expensive a home looks, if there is an initial smell, beware. This place smells like a hotel which reflects well not only on the cleaners and ancillary staff but also on the nurses as it shows their commitment to issues of incontinence. The facilities are fantastic reflecting a wish to mirror resident's needs rather than imposing some patriarchal attitude to what someone may feel they need. The staff all care and I was proud to see the standard of my nursing colleagues reflecting both their professionalism and also their compassion. The rest of the staff also uphold similar standards. Where else would a chef be so concerned over the nutritional needs of a resident that they offer to cook anything they want? Finally, the ultimate from a doctor. If I needed a home, this would be the one.

My mother has been at Hazelwell for approximately 18 months and has been well cared for during this time. All the staff treat the residents with care and attention and this was particularly evident to me during the final days of my mother's life. There was genuine emotion coupled with professionalism during her final weeks and a real sense of teamwork.

My mother-in-law lived here for 18 months and was cared for very well and encouraged to retain her independence. However, in her last week of life when we were constantly in the home, we realised quite how caring and professional all the staff are. They could not have been more kind and helpful, both to her and to us. They all had her best wishes at heart and we came to see what a happy family atmosphere there is there.

My mother has been a resident for 18 months and receives excellent care from all the staff. Unfortunately, she became terminally ill and passed away last week. During the vigil, the staff were excellent in their caring for my mother and emotional support for the family. My mother couldn't have had better care. The staff were dedicated to their roles.

Having visited my friends 97-year-old mother on at least five occasions at different times of the day, during her two-week stay, I am rather disappointed with the lack of attention to the individual buzzer service. Each time I visited the buzzers and phones went unanswered for very long periods. I phoned myself on four occasions only to be cut off twice and unanswered twice having left it to ring for thirty-five times!! This is an expensive home who should be providing enough staff to respond to the residents who require attention. They do provide plenty of activities and the food standard seemed good but the individual attention, in my opinion, was poor in many ways. The staff did seem friendly. I went there one afternoon and no-one had been in to make her bed, another of her visitors did it for her, not acceptable. I have only given satisfactory in some cases as I can't give a definite, honest answer....little things being neglected, maybe because of the lack of staff on duty.

Reply from Kathryn McGuinness, Home Manager at The Hazelwell Care Home

I was not aware of these issues, so unfortunately not able to investigate them at the time. We have introduced a new cordless phone system so that the seniors and nurses have a phone on them at all times. This issue has also been raised with staff to make sure they are aware of the importance of...

The atmosphere is always friendly and the staff are friendly and welcoming.

The meals are varied and good and are served either in the room or in the dining room. Everyone seems prepared to go the extra mile to make it a home from home.

Mum was admitted from hospital as a nursing resident following an infection that would not go away. She has been looked after with great sympathy and attention. The staff could not have been more caring or more helpful to her family. She has been made extremely comfortable and has wanted for nothing. We are extremely grateful to The Hazelwell for all you have done.
