So, when my 90 year old brother was in need of more care, The Ferns was the obvious place for him to come too.
We would never have any hesitation in recommending The Ferns to anyone looking for a care home
The whole building has been so thoughtfully designed in every way and has such a homely feel.
The staff are always so kind and friendly and visitors are always made to feel welcome at any time of the day. 10/10 all round
It means a great deal to us that you entrusted both your dear friend and now your brother into our care. We are truly grateful for your kind words about our home, team and...
1) The leadership is competent, accessible, responsive, and relatable. In particular the current CEO is a great leader - she goes above and beyond to help residents and their families, knows all the residents personally, meets with them frequently, and the staff appear to admire and support her.
2) There is very little staff turnover. This is important for relationship building and understand of individual needs. Almost without exception the staff are competent and caring. I visit every day and they care about me too.
3) The facilities are lovely - many dining rooms, lounge areas, lovely gardens, and a wide range of engaging activities.
Thank you for taking the time to submit your review and the positive feedback on your current experience. We do love having you visit us!
It would be naive to assume that care is 100 percent perfect, but I genuinely do not think we could have found a better home, and without someone sitting with mum 24 hours a day, there could not have been more done to allay her anxiety.
The activities to engage with residents are so varied - mum was not very sociable with her dementia but enjoyed table tennis from her wheelchair, giant connect four and made use of the garden. Visits from children's choirs were a highlight for her.
When mum deteriorated in her last days the staff could not have been more considerate with us as family as well as with my mother.
Dad is now a resident and whilst primarily bed bound he enjoys the interaction with all the staff, the smiles, the jokes, the "dropping in". The laughter sustains him.
It was an honour to care for your mother during her time on Memory Lane. Your words about the respect,...
Overall I am very happy with the care. Staff are always cheerful and lovely. I do however think that there is a lack of staff. Which considering the fees and imminent increase, feel this is not really acceptable.
Thank you so much for your kind feedback. I'm really pleased to hear that you are happy with the care provided in our home. It means a lot to know that our staff's cheerful and caring approach has made a positive difference. I'd like to reassure you our staffing levels are aligned with residents...
My father was only resident for 3 months before sadly passing away. However, I cherish the time he had in The Fernes because he thrived there, gaining healthy weight (from the fabulous meals offered) and he thoroughly enjoyed the wide range of activities and entertainment provided. As a daily visitor I was always impressed over the cleanliness of the home and the welcoming, caring and friendly attitude of the Staff. I cannot praise enough the care, dignity and compassion they showed my father in his final weeks and the extra attention this took. I was so pleased he passed in the lovely environment of The Fernes. I would thoroughly recommend The Fernes if you were considering a Care Home.
Thank you so much for your kind and heartfelt words. It was a truly privilege to care for your father and we are so pleased that he felt happy, comfortable and well supported during his time with us. Your appreciation of our team's care, compassion and dedication means more than we can say. We...
The Fernes has always been a friendly welcoming and caring environment for my mother. Staff always greet with a smile. I am always informed of anything of note when it comes to my mums care. The festive decorations are a treat to behold and I feel secure in the knowledge that my mum is well looked after in a safe, caring environment by staff who know her very well.
We are delighted to hear that you continue to find The Fernes to be a friendly, welcoming and caring environment for your mother. Your reassurance that our team keeps you well informed about your mum's care means a great...
We chose The Fernes, and I needn't have worried & can relax now, knowing he is being cared for by the most wonderful staff with empathy and kindness.
I can't speak highly enough of Fernes. It is a smaller home, efficiently run by lovely, friendly people, with a happy & relaxed atmosphere. The food choice is excellent & there are varied and well-thought-out activities every day. It is a pleasure to visit.
Thank you so much for your kind and heartfelt feedback. We know how how difficult this transition can be, and we are truly honoured that you chose The Fernes to care for your husband. It means a lot for us to know you feel reassured and confident in the empathy and kindness shown by our team. Your...
All the staff at the Fernes are extremely caring, professional and kind and always go the extra mile to ensure the residents are safe and happy. The home is beautiful and the activities, food and daily life are brilliant. My Mum is so happy and it is a wonderful feeling to know she is so well cared for. Thank you
Thank you so much for your lovely feedback. We are delighted to hear that you found our staff to be caring and that you enjoyed the warm, welcoming atmosphere in our beautiful home. Enhancing mum's life by providing outstanding care, nutritional meals and daily life enrichment is really rewarding for our caring staff. We are very grateful four your kind words.
My father had been a resident of The Fernes since July 2024. He settled in well and was very happy. The staff were very friendly and caring and Dad got on well with them all. As a regular visitor I was also very impressed as the home was always very clean and tidy and all the staff were very welcoming. Sadly my father passed away on the 14th October 2025 but I can't praise the staff at The Fernes enough for the care, dignity and compassion that they gave Dad in his last five or six difficult weeks. These final weeks meant that he needed more attention and time from the staff and I was so pleased that he passed at The Fernes and not in hospital. Thanks.
Thank you so much for taking the time to share your kind words during such a difficult period. On behalf of the entire team at The Fernes, please accept our heartfelt condolences on the passing of your father. It means a lot to us to know that he felt settled, happy, and well cared for during his...
I found the Fernes a lovely care home with plenty of parking. The management were welcoming and settled me in well. My room which included a nice size bathroom was comfortable with plenty of room to move around. All the staff were caring and kind. The food on the whole was very good with varied menus each day. It was pleasing to be able to use the garden at the rear especially when my family visited, and they were always made welcome by the staff.
Thank you so much for your kind and thoughtful feedback. We are truly delighted to hear that you've had such a positive experience at The Fernes. Our team works hard to ensure that every resident feels safe, comfortable and well-cared for, so it is incredible rewarding to know that our efforts are being recognised.
The staff of the Fernes put on a fantastic 100th birthday party for my father. We had a lot of singing and dancing including other residents and friends & family of my father. The staff were all so kind and caring and obviously loved to party. My sincere thanks to all involved my father really enjoyed himself.
Thank you so much for your lovely review and for sharing such kind words about our team. We have been honoured to celebrate dad's birthday and we are pleased to hear that the day felt as special as it should for such a remarkable milestone.it was a privilege to be part of such a memorable occasion, and to see the smiles, laughter and love shared throughout the day.
Mum stayed at The Fernes for two weeks to let her arm recover after a fall. With very short notice the manager was able to find her a room and made her very welcome. As a family we are very grateful in her accommodating all the staff are.
Thank you so much for taking the time to review our home following your Mum's stay with us. We are very happy to help and support your Mum at any time and are so pleased that we could aid her recovery following the fall.
The Fernes has provided a wonderful new home for my mother. The staff are caring, supportive and all are very helpful with wonderful smiles. The environment is small enough to provide a really homely feeling but it also provides spacious bedrooms, a welcoming coffee area and a beautiful dining room which leads into wonderful gardens. All in all a home I can really recommend.
Dear NS,Thank you so much for such a beautiful review, your mother is a delight and is our pleasure to care for her. I will certainly be sharing your lovely review with the team at The Fernes.
Tea/coffee + cake facilities for family is extremely welcome and the fact that dogs can visit is very important to us.
Most importantly the staff are so friendly caring, respectful and full of humour - it makes the whole experience fantastic!
Dear H D, thank you for taking the time to leave us such a lovely review. We appreciate your feedback and will share this with the team, it is always nice for the team to hear such kind words of recognition.
I have had a really good experience at The Fernes. Everyone has been incredibly kind and caring, always ready to go the extra mile with a quick response to the buzzer. The facilities are excellent, the room was well appointed and kept very clean with a comfortable bed. The quality of the food good, well cooked and presented and management of my gluten and fish allergies well catered for. The time of the evening meal is too early but is probably dictated by staffing demands. The glass water jug supplied to the bedrooms is too heavy but a plastic one was supplied when asked. A huge thanks for filling in between hospital and second care home near family.
Dear A B, your words mean so much to us, was a pleasure to have you with us. It is rewarding to know that you were satisfied during your stay at The Fernes, this is a great achievement to share with the team. We aim to provide the best services to our residents, to make their stay enjoyable.
I had a day out with my daughter yesterday, and when I began to feel tired, I heard myself saying, 'I think I'd like to go home now'. That about sums it up.
Dear P S, we are pleased to hear that you are happy and content in your home. It is always so nice to hear words like caring, friendliness and thoughtful used to describe our staff. Thank you also for your positive comments regarding our home and team. It is our pleasure caring for you here at The Fernes. We are so proud of our team, enriching the lives of our residents.
Mum moved into Barchester The Fernes in January 2024, initially for respite care to get over a chest infection. She loved the company so much that she decided to stay! In August, Mum celebrated her 93rd birthday at The Fernes surrounded by her family and friends. The family are so pleased that Mum has settled in so well. It is a huge relief to know that someone is caring for her 24/7! The staff are fantastic, the food is amazing and the activities are the highlight of Mum's day. Thank you to every single member of staff.
Dear Jane, thank you for taking the time to leave us a wonderful review. Your satisfaction is very important to us. I will ensure that this will be shared with the team as a reward for their outstanding care. We are glad that Mum enjoys living at The Fernes, Mum's wellbeing is our top priority.
All caring staff are brilliant and helpful. The new management are so easy to talk to and very helpful.
Thank you for you warm welcome, it is my pleasure to lead and work with such a great team. It is our honour to care for your partner.
Really accomodating getting mum settled in. Lovely building, nice room. Guests treated well. Plenty of activities, meet the manager time, where you could find out about the manager's background and also ask any nagging questions. Staff really friendly and treat you like one of the family.
Thank you for your review of our home. As a team, we pride ourselves on ensuring that our residents and families feel at home and that we are on hand to answer any questions you may have at any time, your lovely comments show that we are doing what we strive to achieve.
Overall, we are very happy with the care and support Mum receives, we have had a few issues and these have been sorted out. The staff are excellent, very caring and affectionate with the residents, we are happy that Mum is in such a caring home. Food is excellent - Mum loves it. Our only disappointment is the lack of activities for memory lane, it feels like they are left out, so disappointed with this aspect, not as advertised.
Thank you for your feedback, Martine. We have taken your concerns on board and we are implementing changes in regard to activities for our Memory Lane residents. We are pleased you are happy with the rest of your mum's experience. Thank you again for taking the time to give us a review.

Meet the Team (11)

Hello, my name is Alina, and I am the General Manager at The Fernes Care Home. My team and I look forward to welcoming you into our home.
I have a background in HR, IT, and finance, but I decided to pursue a career in healthcare when I moved to the UK in 2015. My first experience with the residents I supported had a profound impact on me, and it changed my perspective on life. It made me realise the difference that good care and compassion can make in a person's life.
In my previous roles, I spent most of my time in an office, surrounded only by my computer, paperwork, and occasional phone calls. But in my current role, I take home with me the smiles, hugs, and happiness of the residents I care for. It is the greatest reward.
Since starting my career in healthcare, I have continued to develop my skills and knowledge. I have achieved Level 2 and Level 3 in Adult Care, a distinction in Dementia Care, and a Level 5 Diploma in Leadership of Health and Social Care Adults with distinction. I am an adaptable person with good business acumen and a positive attitude.
As a passionate healthcare professional, I am committed to leading my team in delivering outstanding care to our residents. I practice an open-door policy for residents, relatives, and staff, as they are at the heart of what we do at The Fernes.

Hi, my name is Hayley, and I am the Deputy Manager at The Fernes. I started working here 8 years ago as a carer and have followed my career goals and aspirations, and worked my way through the ranks to Deputy Manager.
My learning and development were recognised in 2023 when I was the South Division's Learner of the Year.
My passion within the care sector is palliative care, and I am the home's Palliative Care Champion.
In my spare time, I enjoy watching sports or being by the sea.
I look forward to welcoming you to our wonderful home.

Hi, my name is Justyna, and I am Community Care Lead here at The Fernes. I actually started my journey here at Barchester as a housekeeper in 2019, but soon realised my passion was within the care side of the home. I worked hard to progress from Carer to Community Care Lead by completing my NVQ’s within the company. I work mainly on our Memory Lane unit, and I am also Dementia Champion. As a Care Community Lead, I am responsible for overseeing the clinical and care delivery within the home. I take pride in maintaining high standards of quality, compliance, and person-centred care, while nurturing a positive and inclusive culture among my team. I am approachable and supportive; I actively encourage learning, reflection, and team development. I strive to lead by example, balancing professionalism with warmth and empathy in every interaction with residents, families, and staff.

I started working at Barchester in 2023 at Challoner House Nursing Home in Chandlers Ford in a job share role as Administrator. In November 2025 I decided to return to full time employment and I was lucky enough to join The Fernes Care Home in the capacity of full time Administrator.
I have worked in administration for over 35 years and really enjoy my current role with Barchester. I enjoy working at The Fernes and especially love being able to support our residents and their families.

Hello, my name is Becci. I have worked at The Fernes since 2017. I started out as a carer and in 2023 I was given the opportunity to take on the role of Admin Assistant. I really enjoy the different challenges this role brings whilst still being able to see the lovely residents and our wonderful team. I love being able to build up relationships with family and friends and welcome them into our home with a smile. My career here at The Fernes has taught me many new skills which I am really grateful for and I look forward to expanding my knowledge further.

Hello, my name is Emily. I’ve been working at the Fernes for a year and a half. I started as a carer and was given the opportunity to progress and begin my NVQ 3 to become a senior carer.
I’m passionate about my job and love working for the Fernes. It’s become a second family, both staff and residents and I hope to progress my career here.

I was soon given the opportunity to progress to a senior carer and move on to the day shift.
You will find me working on all 3 floors throughout the home. I enjoy the variety this gives me plus it allows me to get to know all the residents we care for.
I am also a Dementia Champion for our home, which I enjoy. I like to spend my spare time with my family or indulging in some retail therapy

I have been working in care for the majority of my work life, I started in domiciliary care and then made the move to The Fernes Care Home. I have progressed from Carer to Senior Carer and jumped at the opportunity to become the Activities Coordinator. I am outgoing and creative so find this role much more suited to me.
I enjoy planning all the fun and meaningful activities which are enriching the residents' lives. As I have worked my way up at The Fernes, I feel I know our residents very well and love to meet new faces, getting to know them and help them to meet new friends. Spending quality time with residents and seeing them relaxed, smiling and happy is the most rewarding part of the role.

My name is Mark. I started at The Fernes in 2025. Previously, I was a Facilities manager at various secondary schools. This has given me the opportunity to expand on my skill set in different areas of maintenance and Health and Safety. I am very into motorcycles, so much so that I own 3! In my spare time, I am either riding my bike or oil painting. No job is too big or small; my priority is ensuring the residents are safe and happy in their homes.

My name is Grazia, I’m super excited to introduce myself as the Head Chef at The Fernes.
I grew up in Sardinia where my passion for cooking was born. Professionally I have 30 years of experience, initially working in Sardinia before moving to London as a Pastry Chef. Cooking is my passion; I strive to be the best I can and so in 2019 I joined a care home in order to become the complete Chef that I am today. I have been with Barchester for the last 3 years where, in order to progress my career, I was given the opportunity to successfully complete my Chef Academy. I love cats and I have 4, they are my babies. If I’m not at work you will tending to my garden or shopping!!

My name is Kerry an I am the Head of Housekeeping at The Fernes. I am bringing with me a wealth of experience in both housekeeping and management within the care sector. I have a strong background in maintaining high standards of cleanliness and organisation. I am dedicated to creating a safe, welcoming, and comfortable environment for all our residents, families, and staff.
My experience in care management made me understand the unique needs of those living in our home, ensuring that housekeeping not only meets regulatory standards but also enhances the overall well-being, experience and dignity of our residents. I aim to lead my team with professionalism, compassion, and attention to detail, fostering a culture of excellence and teamwork.
I am passionate about making a positive difference, and I take pride in supporting my team to deliver outstanding care in a homely and well-kept environment.
